Apple Creator Studio gets a major AI boost with latest update | Macworld
Apple Creator Studio gets a major AI boost with latest update
Macworld On Tuesday, Apple announced new features in the apps for Apple Creator Studio, its collection of professional creative apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. The updates will be available in November for free to current Creator Studio subscribers. Each of the 10 apps that make up Creator Studio received a major update. Video software updates Apple acquired plug-in developer MotionVFX earlier this year; the company specialized in video editing and graphics tools subscriptions that cost for $29 per month. The MotionVFX tools for color grading, rotoscoping, and tracking, as well as graphics, themed templates, titles, and transitions will be incorporated into Final Cut Pro in the update for no extra charge. Final Cut Pro now has cross-app functionality with Pixelmator Pro, so editors can open images directly from the timeline and save changes back to the project without needing to reimport the image. Other enhancements include more keyframe easing options, the ability to disconnect clips from the primary storyline to place them anywhere on the timeline, and 23 new transcription languages. Apple Motion also benefits from the MotionVFX acquisition; it incorporates new options for 3D camera tracking, cinematic color grading, and one-click selection for visual effects. Motion also supports a new Displacement filter, image generation and edits from text descriptions, cross-app functionality with Pixelmator Pro, and fine-tuned keyframe easing. Compressor supports the ability to encode Cinematic mode video recorded on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. Pixelmator Pro Pixelmator Pro gets the power of AI with its new Generate Fill option that performs edits based on a user’s description. It takes into account the surrounding area to match lighting, perspective, and texture to create a seamless blend. Sharpness is maintained with Pixelmator Pro’s built-in Super Resolution technology. Logic Pro Apple worked with OpenAI for a new intelligent assistant in Logic Pro for Mac. The assistant can be used for navigating workflow productions, refining an active project, starting a new song, or setting up a vocal track. The Browser has been redesigned to make it easier to find effect patches, instruments, loops, and more. Logic Pro can analyze and classify sounds to make them easier to find. The enhanced Stem Splitter now has the ability to isolate, replace, or rebalance drum parts without needing the original multitracks. A new Sergio George Producer Pack features authentic Latin jazz and salsa loops, including a full salsa percussion section, brass ensemble, and basses. Apple Logic Pro also has a Voice Memo Studio Sound feature that can reduce noise in iPhone recordings. And Logic Pro on both the Mac and iPad has Liquid Glass Ui enhancements. Freeform, Keynote, Numbers, Pages Apple’s productivity apps are enhanced by a new “Intelligent Assistant” that understands document context and can be used to develop content. For example, the assistant in Keynote can be used to design slides. In Pages, the assistant can help with fine-tuning what’s been written. In Numbers, the assistant can calculate, visualize, and organize data, recommend chart types, and build custom tables. Apple accidentally revealed these features last week when it prematurely posted the update. The Content Hub for these apps now includes Apple-curated stock video footage, and subscribers get new templates and themes. Keynote introduces support for Keynote Interchange Format (.keyx), an open JSON-based bundle file format. Freeform adds text styles, and in December, will have the ability to edit images directly in Pixelmator Pro and generate editable shapes from text descriptions. Apple Creator Studio is available via subscription for $12.99/£12.99 per month or $129/£129 per year. Education pricing is available. Up to six family members can share all of the apps and content included in Apple Creator Studio with Family Sharing. One-time-purchase versions of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor, and MainStage are available on the Mac App Store. Freeform, Keynote, Numbers, and Pages are free.

Formula 1's CEO sees a very long-term future with Apple TV
Questions about viewership haven't cooled Formula 1's enthusiasm for Apple TV, with the sport's president and CEO hoping to extend its U.S. broadcasting partnership beyond 2030.Apple TV + F1Liberty Media president and CEO Derek Chang told Axios at an October 22 event in Austin, TX that F1 intends to see its five-year agreement through and hopes the partnership continues afterward. Chang said Apple has performed even better than the company expected.Chang wouldn't confirm whether the contract includes an opt-out provision that could allow F1 to leave the agreement early. However, he dismissed the question as a moot point because Liberty Media considers Apple a strong partner.Apple secured exclusive U.S. broadcasting rights in October 2025, replacing ESPN beginning with the 2026 season. The agreement covers every Grand Prix, qualifying session, sprint race, and practice session through 2030. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

Apple’s M6 iMac is here: What’s new and which model to buy
Macworld Apple has updated the iMac with its M6 chip, bringing faster processing, stronger graphics, and improved AI capabilities to its colorful all-in-one desktop. Announced on October 27, 2026, the new model replaces the M4 iMac introduced in 2024, with Apple skipping the M5 generation. The five biggest upgrades are faster CPU performance, more powerful graphics, improved AI processing, faster SSD storage, and upgraded networking. Both configurations gain additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and greater memory bandwidth. Connectivity improves with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and available 2.5Gb Ethernet. However, the familiar 24-inch design remains, along with the seven color options, 4.5K Retina display, and 12MP Center Stage camera. Starting memory and storage are unchanged at 16GB and 256GB. The M6 iMac starts at $1,499 for the two-port model and $1,699 for the four-port version. Preorders open October 28, with deliveries and store availability beginning November 6. M6 vs. M4 iMac: The biggest changes The upgrades differ slightly depending on whether you choose the two-port or four-port model. There are still seven different colors available for iMac.Apple The M6 iMac retains the slim, colorful design introduced with the M1 model in 2021. It has white display bezels, a colored chin beneath the screen, and a matching stand. There is no notch. Apple continues to offer seven finishes: blue, green, pink, orange, yellow, purple, and silver. Despite pre-launch speculation about new colors, Apple has not announced any new color options. The two-port model includes a Magic Keyboard with a Lock key. Buyers can configure it with a Magic Keyboard featuring Touch ID and a numeric keypad. The four-port model includes a Touch ID keyboard, with a numeric-keypad version available as an option. Both configurations offer a Magic Mouse or an optional Magic Trackpad. USB-C charging for these accessories carries over from the M4 generation. M6 iMac display: Is the screen better? New iMac, same screenApple The display specifications are unchanged. Both models have a 24-inch LED-backlit 4.5K Retina display, with an actual diagonal measurement of 23.5 inches. The camera and audio specifications also carry over: a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View and 1080p video recording, a six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers, Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio, and a three-microphone array. M6 iMac processor: How much faster is it? The M6 is now in the iMacApple The M6 is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process, replacing the second-generation 3nm technology used for M4. The smaller process increases transistor density and helps improve performance and power efficiency. CPU and graphics The two-port iMac moves from an eight-core CPU and GPU to ten cores of each. That is a 25 percent increase in core counts. The four-port model moves from a ten-core CPU and GPU to twelve cores of each—a 20 percent increase. That’s more cores, not necessarily a measured speed improvements. Both M6 configurations introduce two super cores. The entry model pairs these with three performance cores and five efficiency cores; the four-port version has four performance cores and six efficiency cores. Neural Engine and AI processing Both configurations gain a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, replacing M4’s single 16-core engine. Neural Accelerators in the GPU add further processing capability for supported AI workloads. Memory bandwidth for both M6 models increases from 120GB/s to as much as 170GB/s—approximately 42 percent higher. Apple’s performance claims Apple reports the following improvements over M4 in its specified tests: WorkloadClaimed improvementProductivity tasks, including ExcelUp to 1.5×Graphics tasks, including Affinity photo editingUp to 2×Ray-traced gamingUp to 2×Local AI prompt processing in LM StudioUp to 5×Neural Engine AI computeUp to 2× Apple identifies a 10-core M4 with 32GB memory and a 2TB SSD as its previous-generation comparison configuration. Media engine Apple lists the same media-format capabilities across both generations: hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, plus AV1 decoding. M6 iMac RAM: How much memory does it have? Memory capacities are unchanged: ModelStandard memoryAvailable upgradesTwo-port M6 iMac16GB24GBFour-port M6 iMac16GB24GB or 32GB The main change is faster access to memory, rather than more included RAM. For everyday browsing, office applications, and family use, 16GB should be sufficient. Buyers working with larger creative projects or demanding multitasking should consider 24GB. The four-port model’s 32GB option offers more headroom for memory-intensive applications and larger local AI models. Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU, and other components. More capacity lets applications and local models hold more data in memory, potentially reducing reliance on SSD swap. M6 iMac connectivity: What’s new? Apple Both models upgrade from Wi-Fi 6E to Wi-Fi 7 and from Bluetooth 5.3 to Bluetooth 6. Ethernet improves too. Apple’s comparison documents list optional 2.5Gb Ethernet on the two-port M6 model and include it as standard on the four-port version. Their M4 equivalents offered optional and standard Gigabit Ethernet, respectively. The higher Ethernet connection speed can benefit transfers to compatible network storage, but requires suitable network equipment. Apple also lists its N1 wireless networking chip and Thread support. Port counts remain unchanged: two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports on the entry model and four Thunderbolt 4 ports on the higher version. The 3.5mm headphone socket retains support for high-impedance headphones. The color-matched magnetic 143W power adapter connector remains. M6 iMac price: How much will it cost? The M6 iMac starts at $1,499 for the two-port model and $1,699 for the four-port model, both with 16GB memory and a 256GB SSD. Those prices match the outgoing M4 prices, but they are $200 higher than the M4’s original 2024 launch prices, which Apple increased in June 2026. ConfigurationM6 starting priceM4 price after June 2026 increaseM4 original launch priceTwo-port, 16GB/256GB$1,499/£1,499$1,499/£1,499$1,299/£1,299Four-port, 16GB/256GB$1,699/£1,699$1,699/£1,699$1,499/£1,499 The entry-level storage remains 256GB. The two-port model can be configured with 512GB or 1TB; the four-port model adds a 2TB option. These capacities match the M4 iMac. Should you buy the M6 iMac? The M6 iMac is the most compelling for buyers replacing an older Intel iMac or seeking an integrated desktop with a display, camera, speakers, keyboard, and mouse. M4 owners have less reason to upgrade unless a particular workload is already limiting them. The screen, camera, audio hardware, memory capacities, and overall design remain familiar. Independent testing will establish how much difference M6 makes in everyday use. Which model should you buy? Choose the two-port model for everyday home computing, schoolwork, browsing, and office applications. It receives the headline Neural Engine and memory-bandwidth improvements, so buyers do not need the four-port model simply to obtain those upgrades. Choose the four-port model for its faster 12-core CPU and GPU, additional connections, included Ethernet, and Touch ID keyboard. It also supports 32GB memory and 2TB storage configurations. For a flexible home-office or creative setup, our provisional recommendation is the four-port model with 24GB memory and a 512GB SSD, subject to upgrade pricing. Buyers running larger local AI models should assess whether the 32GB option meets their software’s requirements. A substantially discounted M4 remains worth considering for everyday use. Compare equivalent memory, storage, and port configurations when judging the saving.

Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro is here: Everything you need to know
Macworld Apple has announced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by M6. This announcement covers the standard-chip model; it does not introduce M6 Pro or M6 Max versions. Preorders begin October 28, with availability from November 6. The biggest changes center on the processor. M6 moves to a 2-nanometer manufacturing process and increases both CPU and GPU core counts from 10 to 12. It also introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine and higher maximum memory bandwidth. Wireless connectivity supplies the other major upgrade: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 replace the M5 model’s Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Apple claims graphics performance improves by up to 30 percent over M5. The M6 MacBook Pro looks just like the previous generation.John Brandon As expected, the new model continues the familiar aluminum design in Space Black and Silver. A more ambitious redesign is anticipated for the rumored touchscreen MacBook expected to launch tomorrow. The M6 MacBook Pro retains the same dimensions and weight as its M5 predecessor. It measures 12.31 inches wide, 8.71 inches deep, and 0.61 inch thick (31.26 × 22.12 × 1.55cm), and weighs 3.4 pounds (1.55kg). As with the predecessor, its controls include a backlit Magic Keyboard, full-height function keys, Touch ID, and a Force Touch trackpad. M6 MacBook Pro display: Resolution and screen quality The screen hasn’t changed with the M6 generation.Foundry Apple has not announced a screen upgrade in this release. The M6 uses a 2nm manufacturing process, increasing transistor density, and features a 12-core CPU comprising two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. That’s up from the M5’s 10-core CPU. Apple’s Mac mini M6 announcement claimed up to 20 percent faster multithreaded performance than M5, although that testing used a Mac mini. Read more about the M6 in our M6 deep dive. Graphics also get a boost, with a 12-core GPU replacing the M5’s 10-core version. Neural Accelerators and hardware-accelerated ray tracing return, while memory bandwidth increases from 153GB/s to up to 170GB/s, allowing data to move more quickly between the chip and unified memory. The M6 introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine, compared with the M5’s single 16-core engine. For this laptop, Apple reports up to 1.9 times faster Neural Engine performance and 25 percent faster on-device AI workloads versus M5. These are separate measures of performance, with the benefits depending on the task and how an app uses the chip. The Media Engine retains the M5’s listed capabilities, including hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, alongside AV1 decoding. Dedicated video encoding and decoding hardware helps handle demanding media tasks efficiently, but Apple’s comparison sheet lists no new codec support for M6. However, memory bandwidth increases from 153GB/s to up to 170GB/s, helping the chip access data more quickly. Additional unified memory gives applications and graphics workloads more room to operate simultaneously. For local AI, capacity affects which models fit in memory, while bandwidth affects how quickly data can move. Buying advice: Choose 16GB for everyday productivity; consider 24GB for heavier multitasking and creative work, or 32GB for memory-intensive projects and local AI experimentation. M6 MacBook Pro Connectivity: What ports and wireless options are there? Wireless connectivity improves with Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and Bluetooth 6, replacing the M5 model’s Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Wi-Fi 7 availability varies by country. The physical connections remain unchanged, including three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones. M6 MacBook Pro battery, MagSafe, and charging Apple rates the M6 MacBook Pro for up to 24 hours of video streaming or 16 hours of wireless web browsing, matching the M5 model. These are Apple’s test figures; we’ll be running our own independent battery tests to establish whether M6 delivers better endurance during everyday work or more demanding tasks. In the U.S. a 70W USB-C power adapter ships with both models, this is an extra expense in the U.K. and Europe (as was the case for the M5 model). Fast charging requires a 96W or higher USB Power Delivery source, so buyers who want that capability should check their adapter’s output. The listed 70W adapter does not meet Apple’s fast-charging requirement. Buy if: You need a replacement now and the standard MacBook Pro meets your workload. Buyers moving from older machines are more likely to notice the improvement than recent M5 owners. Don’t buy if: Your M5 already handles your work comfortably. Wait for independent benchmarks before paying to replace it, especially if one particular application drives your decision. Which configuration? Prioritize memory around the projects you actually run. For demanding graphics, large datasets, or professional video work, compare the full specifications and benchmarks of Pro and Max models rather than choosing solely by the newer “M6” name. Wait if: An OLED touchscreen or redesigned chassis would materially affect your purchase. These may arrive tomorrow, and for a more powerful chip, reports indicate the M7 Pro/Max is expected in 2027, rather than an M5 Pro and M5 Max now. Of the five generations of MacBook Pro, five have been released in the October/November timeframe. Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro isn’t very ‘exciting’ at all | Macworld
Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro isn’t very ‘exciting’ at all
Macworld The new MacBook Pro has arrived, but if you don’t have access to a benchmarking app, you’d be hard-pressed to know you were using one. As expected, Apple rolled out the M6 update to its entry-level MacBook Pro, but there isn’t anything obviously new. The colors are the same (silver and space black). The memory and storage options are the same. The display is the same. And thankfully, the price is the same. The M6 MacBook Pro is, quite literally, a chip-and-ship update. The new M6 chip, which Apple already unveiled in the Mac mini in late August, is a relatively minor refresh of the M5, which delivered a nice graphics boost. Sure it’s faster, but you’ll need to see benchmark numbers to see the difference. Here are the specs: M6 chip 12-core CPU (2 super, 4 performance, and 6 efficiency) 12-core GPU Neural Accelerators Hardware-accelerated ray tracing Dual 16-core Neural Engine Up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth Media engine Hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW Video decode engine Video encode engine ProRes encode and decode engine AV1 decode That’s identical to the chip we got in the Mac mini, so no surprises there. The M5 MacBook Pro was the last of Apple’s laptops to still run Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, so it also got an upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 with the N1 chip. But if you don’t have a Wi-Fi 7 router and a very fast network, you’re not going to notice that either. From what we’re hearing, this MacBook Pro will be the last of its kind. Apple is expected to release a touchscreen MacBook Pro with a new design this week. That new design will reportedly make its way to the non-touchscreen models with next year’s M7 update, so if you have an M4 or M5, you can probably sit this one out. You can pre-order the M6 MacBook Pro tomorrow starting at 10:10 a.m. PT for delivery next Friday, November 6. It starts at the same $1,999 with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, which is a small victory in this age of price hikes.

iPad Mini 2024 vs. 2026 Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade? | MacRumors
iPad Mini 2024 vs. 2026 Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?
Apple today announced the eighth-generation iPad mini, introducing a larger OLED display, a thinner and lighter design, the A20 Pro chip, and water and dust resistance, but how much does it differ from the previous model? The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model and $849 with cellular connectivity. With the prior generation now discontinued, buyers also face a choice between paying for the new features and finding a cheaper A17 Pro model. Both offer the same storage capacities, advertised battery life, Touch ID authentication, and USB-C transfer speeds, so the new model does not improve every aspect of the experience. Here are the key differences between the ‌iPad mini‌ with the A17 Pro chip from 2024 and the ‌iPad mini‌ with the A20 Pro chip from 2026: ‌iPad mini‌ (seventh generation, 2024) ‌iPad mini‌ (eighth generation, 2026) 8.3-inch display 8.5-inch display Liquid Retina display with LED backlighting and IPS technology Super Retina XDR ‌OLED‌ display with 1-nit minimum brightness and 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio 2266-by-1488 resolution 2316-by-1512 resolution Wider display borders 24% thinner display borders 500 nits maximum brightness 600 nits maximum SDR and full-screen HDR brightness; 1,200 nits peak HDR brightness Optional nano-texture display glass on 256GB and 512GB models for an additional $100, supplied with a polishing cloth Extended external display mode with iPadOS 27.2 IP67 water and dust resistance, rated for a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes A17 Pro chip A20 Pro chip, with CPU and Neural Engine configurations varying by storage capacity Portrait front camera Landscape front camera Center Stage front camera with ƒ/2.4 aperture Center Stage front camera with ƒ/2.0 aperture True Tone rear flash Adaptive True Tone rear flash Landscape stereo speakers with external speaker holes Acoustic Display with display-coupled woofers and concealed tweeters, without external speaker holes Third-party wireless module Apple N1 wireless networking chip Wi-Fi 6E connectivity Wi-Fi 7 connectivity Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity Bluetooth 6 connectivity Thread networking technology Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 5G modem (Cellular models only) Apple C2 5G modem; up to 50% faster cellular data speeds according to Apple (Cellular models only) U.S. cellular model (A2995) supports 5G band n76 U.S. cellular model (A3596) supports LTE band 106 UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA cellular support UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ cellular support 19.3Wh battery 18.9Wh battery Fast charging up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 35W or higher USB-C power adapter Available in Space Gray, Starlight, Purple, and Blue Available in Midnight and Starlight Previous polyurethane Smart Folio design Redesigned two-panel TechWoven Smart Folio with adjustable viewing angles, available separately in Navy Blue and Taupe for $79 More than 25% recycled content overall 35% recycled content overall Originally started at $499 (Wi-Fi) or $649 (Wi-Fi + Cellular); Wi-Fi starting price subsequently increased to $599; now discontinued Starts at $699 (Wi-Fi) or $849 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) A17 Pro vs. A20 Pro Unlike the previous model, the new ‌iPad mini‌'s chip hardware now varies according to storage capacity: ‌iPad mini‌ (seventh generation, 2024) ‌iPad mini‌ (eighth generation, 2026) Chip Apple A17 Pro Apple A20 Pro Manufacturing process 3-nanometer 2-nanometer CPU 6 cores 128GB and 256GB: 5 cores 512GB: 6 cores Higher-performance CPU cores 2 performance cores 2 super cores Efficiency CPU cores 4 cores 128GB and 256GB: 3 cores 512GB: 4 cores GPU 5 cores 7 cores GPU Neural Accelerators Dedicated Neural Accelerators in each GPU core Neural Engine 16 cores on all storage configurations 128GB and 256GB: 16 cores 512GB: Dual 16-core Neural Engine, totaling 32 cores Unified memory 8GB Increased capacity, according to Apple; exact amount not yet known Unified memory bandwidth 51.2 GB/s 115.2 GB/s Apple also claims that the new model has the following maximum improvements over the previous model with the A17 Pro chip: Up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance. Up to 2.7 times faster graphics performance. Up to 4.5 times faster AI performance. Dimensions and Weight ‌iPad mini‌ (seventh generation, 2024) ‌iPad mini‌ (eighth generation, 2026) Height 7.69 inches (195.4 mm) 7.69 inches (195.3 mm) Width 5.3 inches (134.8 mm) 5.22 inches (132.6 mm) Thickness 0.25 inch (6.3 mm) 0.21 inch (5.4 mm) Weight (Wi-Fi) 0.65 pound (293 grams) 0.56 pound (255 grams) Weight (Wi-Fi + Cellular) 0.66 pound (297 grams) 0.58 pound (263 grams) The new model is approximately 14% thinner, with the Wi-Fi model approximately 13% lighter and the cellular model approximately 11% lighter. Should You Upgrade? Most A17 Pro ‌iPad mini‌ owners can comfortably keep their current device. The new model offers the same advertised battery life, storage capacities, Apple Pencil support, and USB-C transfer speeds. If your ‌iPad mini‌ still meets your needs, there is little reason to upgrade for everyday performance alone. The slightly larger display now with ‌OLED‌ technology may be the strongest reason to consider replacing it, particularly if you frequently use your ‌iPad mini‌ for watching videos or reading. The thinner and lighter design may also make a worthwhile difference if you spend long periods holding it. For users who regularly encounter distracting reflections or enjoy reading on their device, nano-texture glass could provide a more specific reason to upgrade. It does raise the cost considerably, since it requires at least 256GB of storage as well as the additional $100 display option. The landscape camera, water resistance, and fast charging are useful additions, but are highly unlikely to justify replacing a A17 Pro model on their own. An upgrade makes more sense when several of these changes address things you find limiting about your current device. Which Model Should You Buy? For most new buyers, the A20 Pro model should be the starting point. The ‌OLED‌ display and new design are its main advantages, and both largely matter more to the everyday experience than the chip. The A17 Pro model may still be worth considering when it offers substantial savings. It retains many of the same capabilities and remains a sensible choice for reading, browsing, taking notes, and watching videos, even if it uses the design of an older device. For the A20 Pro model, it is important to remember that the 256GB version makes nano-texture glass available, while the 512GB version adds a CPU core and a second Neural Engine. Apple Responds to iPhone Duo Display Cracking Reports | MacRumors
Apple Responds to iPhone Duo Display Cracking Reports
Shortly after the iPhone Duo launched, a few users reported hinge issues that were causing cracks in the inner display. Apple has now responded to the reports in a statement to MacRumors, saying a small number of units are affected. The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple did not say what causes the cracking, or if a fix is planned. Affected users have been able to get in-store replacements, though with limited stock available, some are having to wait. According to Apple, the problem is limited in scope. Most users are not going to see an issue with their ‌iPhone Duo‌ display, and it's not a defect people have to worry about showing up over time. On affected units, the crack seems to show up shortly after purchase. It is our understanding that some of the images of alleged cracking are AI-generated, which makes it harder to determine the actual scope of the problem. Many of the iPhone Duos experiencing issues cracked in the same place on the lower half of the inner display. The crack is along the hinge, and users say there is a stuck feeling and sometimes a popping noise just before the damage appears. iFixit took apart the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and found several possible causes for the hinge failure. The site said multiple components converge in that location, and it's possible a center support bar in the hinge that's supposed to retract isn't doing so, leading to damage.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

iPhone Duo: Watch Video Above an App in Portrait Mode | MacRumors
iPhone Duo: Watch Video Above an App in Portrait Mode
The iPhone Duo's two-app multitasking feature works side by side in landscape, but rotating the inner display to portrait usually drops you back to a single app. However, there is a workaround to keep a video playing above an open app in portrait, and it involves Picture in Picture. Both the inner and outer displays on the iPhone Duo share the same 1:1.4 aspect ratio, and each half of the inner display works out to roughly the same size and shape as the outer screen. That even split gives each app a canvas it already has to support, with the divider sitting neatly on the fold. The only apparent exception to this is when watching a TV show or movie above another app in portrait mode – but there's a trick to getting it working. With your iPhone Duo unfolded in portrait orientation, follow these steps: Start playing a video in an app that supports Picture in Picture, such as Apple TV or Apple Podcasts. Tap the Picture in Picture icon to shrink the video into a floating window. Swipe up to return to the Home Screen, then open the app you want to use (note: it can't be another video app). Tap the icon that appears in the PiP window to stack the video above the open app. It's a bit of a fiddle, but it works for most apps that support PiP. Whether Apple makes it a little easier to do in a future update remains to be seen.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

AirPods Pro Hearing Aid Feature Launching in These Canadian Provinces
The incoming iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 updates enable Apple's Hearing Aid and Hearing Test features on the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 in five Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. The features are still not available in any other provinces, but Ontario is reportedly about to change a law that will pave the way for the features to launch there. "The Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are supported in select provinces in Canada on AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware when paired with a compatible iPhone or iPad with iOS 27.2 or iPadOS 27.2 and later," says Apple. iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 are currently in beta and could be released as soon as today. With the clinical-grade Hearing Aid feature, AirPods Pro 2 and later can amplify the sound around you. Apple says the feature, available at no additional cost, is intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Meanwhile, the five-minute Hearing Test allows adults to identify if they have hearing loss by measuring their ability to hear different frequencies of sound. Afterwards, the results will show a hearing loss classification and recommended next steps. The two features first launched in the U.S. and select other countries in October 2024. A third Hearing Protection feature on AirPods Pro 2 and later was already available in Canada.Related Roundups: AirPods Pro 3, iOS 27, iPadOS 27Buyer's Guide: AirPods Pro (Neutral)Related Forums: AirPods, iOS 27This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

New iPad Mini Gains Adaptive True Tone Flash | MacRumors
New iPad Mini Gains Adaptive True Tone Flash
Apple's new iPad mini features an Adaptive True Tone flash, bringing an iPad Pro feature to Apple's smallest tablet for the first time. Unlike the iPad Air, the previous-generation iPad mini already featured a True Tone flash. Apple says the new Adaptive True Tone flash on the ‌iPad mini‌ improves photography and document scanning. It sits alongside a 12-megapixel Wide rear camera with Smart HDR 4 and support for recording 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. The Adaptive True Tone flash debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022. It features an array of nine LEDs that adjust its lighting pattern and intensity according to the selected focal length, allowing illumination to better match the camera's field of view. The technology subsequently came to the M4 iPad Pro in 2024, where Apple highlighted its ability to improve document scans. When the camera detects a document obscured by a shadow, the ‌iPad Pro‌ captures multiple images using the Adaptive Flash and combines them into a clearer scan. The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699. Quickly Silence iPhone Duo Without a Ring/Mute Switch | MacRumors
Quickly Silence iPhone Duo Without a Ring/Mute Switch
The new iPhone Duo drops both the classic Ring/Silent switch as well as the newer Action button, so there is no physical mute control on the device, and no way to assign the Silent Mode control to another button. That said, you can still silence the device pretty quickly – you just do it on-screen instead using a new way to invoke Control Center. With your device unlocked, open Control Center by tapping the circular "status bar" icon, then tap the Silent Mode button (the bell icon). That's all there is to it. A Silent mode indicator appears in the status bar while it's on, but you can hide this by toggling on the switch next to Settings ➝ Sounds & Haptics ➝ Show in Status Bar. How to Add Silent Mode to Control Center Silent Mode is included in the default set of controls at the top of the Control Center, but if you don't see it, you can add it manually by following these steps: Tap the circular status bar icon to open Control Center. Tap the plus (+) icon in the top-left corner, then tap Add a Control at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down to the Sounds section or use the search bar to find it, then select Silent Mode. Keep in mind that Silent Mode mutes calls and alerts, but alarms and media audio still play. For scheduled quiet time, you can always set up a Focus instead.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple today announced a TechWoven Smart Folio for the new iPad mini bringing its woven fabric to an iPad cover for the first time and replacing the previous, long-standing polyurethane design. With no polyurethane alternative announced, the new iPad mini looks set to become the first ‌iPad‌ since the original model in 2010 to launch without an Apple polyurethane cover option. Apple introduced the material with the ‌iPad‌ 2's Smart Cover in 2011, continuing through subsequent ‌iPad‌ Smart Covers and Smart Folios until today. The new accessory comes in Navy Blue and Taupe, complementing the ‌iPad mini‌'s Midnight and Starlight finishes. It costs $79 in the U.S., a $20 increase over the previous-generation Smart Folio. Alongside the material change, Apple has redesigned the cover with a two-panel construction. It attaches magnetically to the ‌iPad mini‌ and offers an adjustable range of viewing angles, which Apple says provides a greater range of motion and new viewing angles, for enhanced versatility. Pre-orders for the new Smart Folio begin on Wednesday, October 28, alongside the ‌iPad mini‌, with availability starting on Friday, November 6.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

All Current iPads Now Feature a Landscape Front Camera
With the introduction of the new iPad mini, every model in Apple's current iPad lineup now features a landscape front-facing camera. The transition began with the 10th-generation ‌iPad‌ in 2022, followed by the M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro in 2024. The iPad mini was the last remaining model with its front camera on the portrait edge. Situating the new 12-megapixel Center Stage camera along the landscape edge provides a more natural perspective for video calls when holding the device horizontally.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

OLED iPad Mini Starts at $699 After Second Price Hike This Year | MacRumors
OLED iPad Mini Starts at $699 After Second Price Hike This Year
Apple today announced the first OLED iPad mini, and it carries a pretty hefty price increase compared to just a few years ago. The new model starts at $699, up $100 (or 17%) from the $599 starting price of the previous generation model. It's hard to believe now, but the previous-generation iPad mini kept its $499 price in 2024 even when Apple doubled base storage to 128GB. But then earlier this year, Apple increased the starting price to $599 as part of sweeping price increases across its product line owing to memory and chip shortages. The new model starts with the same 128GB of storage, so the $100 increase since June isn't offset by a capacity bump – but you do get an OLED display instead of LCD. Wi-Fi + Cellular models rise by the same $100, from $749 to $849, and education pricing starts at $649. All that being said, the price hike is less than expectations from earlier this month, when the OLED iPad mini was rumored to cost $200 more than the current model. The higher price accompanies the mini's biggest update in years, featuring that 8.5-inch OLED display, an A20 Pro chip, IP67 water and dust resistance, a new Acoustic Display speaker system, Apple's N1 wireless chip, as well as the C2 modem on cellular models. The color range though has narrowed from four finishes to two: Midnight and Starlight. There's also a new TechWoven Smart Folio that costs $79, up from $59 for the previous Smart Folio. Pre-orders for the new iPad mini open Wednesday, October 28, with availability starting Friday, November 6.Related Roundup: iPad miniTag: OLEDBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

New iPad Mini Available in Just Two Colors | MacRumors
New iPad Mini Available in Just Two Colors
Apple's new iPad mini comes in just Midnight and Starlight, cutting the number of available finishes in half compared with the previous two generations. The outgoing A17 Pro model, introduced in 2024, offered Blue, Purple, Starlight, and Space Gray. The new model drops both Blue and Purple, while Midnight replaces Space Gray as the darker option. Starlight is the only finish carried over. This marks the smallest selection of iPad mini color options since the second generation. The change also marks a departure from the sixth-generation ‌iPad mini‌, which launched in 2021 in Pink, Purple, Starlight, and Space Gray. That redesign introduced more colorful finishes to the lineup, with the 2024 refresh replacing Pink with Blue while retaining four choices. The new TechWoven Smart Folio offers two additional color choices for the cover: Navy Blue and Taupe. Priced at $79, it features a two-panel design with adjustable viewing angles. The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699 for Wi-Fi models and $849 for Wi-Fi and Cellular models. Pre-orders begin on Wednesday, October 28, with availability starting on Friday, November 6.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

512GB OLED iPad Mini Gets Extra CPU Core and Dual Neural Engine
Apple's tech specs for the new iPad mini reveal that the 512GB model ships with a different version of the A20 Pro: a 6-core CPU with two super cores and four efficiency cores, plus a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The 128GB and 256GB models meanwhile get a 5-core CPU (two super, three efficiency) and a 16-core Neural Engine. All three models share a 7-core GPU, Neural Accelerators, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The nano-texture display glass option is also limited to the 256GB and 512GB models. Pricing starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for Wi-Fi + Cellular.Related Roundup: iPad miniTag: OLEDBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

New iPad Mini Offers Nano-Texture Display on Select Models
Apple's new iPad mini offers an optional nano-texture display for reduced glare, but the finish is limited to models with 256GB or 512GB of storage. The nano-texture glass option costs an additional $100 in the U.S., bringing the starting price to $899 for the 256GB Wi-Fi model. The entry-level 128GB model is excluded from the option. Configurations with nano-texture glass also include an Apple polishing cloth in the box. Apple says the finish is intended to improve visibility in bright environments, highlighting uses such as editing outdoors and working in the field. The option accompanies the iPad mini's switch to an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, which delivers deeper blacks and up to 1,200 nits of peak HDR brightness. Nano-texture is also offered on the iPad Pro, although it is restricted to its 1TB and 2TB configurations. As such, the ‌iPad mini‌ makes the finish available at lower storage tiers. The new display also supports 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content and a minimum brightness of 1 nit. Apple Pencil Pro, ‌Apple Pencil‌ (USB-C), and ‌Apple Pencil‌ hover are supported. The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699 for the standard-glass 128GB Wi-Fi model. New iPad Mini Is Apple's First Water-Resistant iPad | MacRumors
New iPad Mini Is Apple's First Water-Resistant iPad
The new iPad mini is Apple's first water-resistant iPad, featuring an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Apple tested the device for immersion in water up to one meter deep for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. The company highlights reading by the pool and working outdoors on a rainy day as situations where the protection could be particularly useful. The new iPad mini's "Acoustic Display" audio system apparently helps make the protection possible. It uses specially designed woofers paired through the display, with tweeters hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure. Apple says the system's sealed enclosure contributes to the IP67 rating while also improving bass and volume. Apple cautions that splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and can decrease with normal wear. The company advises against charging a wet ‌iPad‌, and liquid damage is not covered under warranty. Pricing starts at $699, with pre-orders beginning on Wednesday, October 28, ahead of availability on Friday, November 6.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

New iPad Mini Uses 'Acoustic Display' for Redesigned Speaker System
The new iPad mini features Apple's first "Acoustic Display" audio system, using the screen to help produce sound. The system pairs specially designed woofers through the display to deliver what Apple describes as punchier bass and higher volume. Separate tweeters, which handle higher frequencies, are concealed between the display glass and aluminum enclosure. Together, the components are designed to improve audio. The Acoustic Display's sealed enclosure also helps the new iPad mini achieve its IP67 rating. The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699 for Wi-Fi models and $849 for Wi-Fi and Cellular models. Upcoming changes to Rosetta support for Intel-based macOS apps | ADC Headlines
Upcoming changes to Rosetta support for Intel-based macOS apps
In 2020, we introduced Apple silicon for Mac computers, providing Rosetta as a translation layer during the transition period. As announced at WWDC last year, we’re now concluding this transition. What this means for developers who have macOS apps: macOS 26.4 or later: Users may receive a system notification when launching apps that rely on Rosetta, alerting them to update to an Apple silicon native version. macOS 27: Final release to support Rosetta — Intel-only apps will no longer run on Mac computers with Apple silicon after this update. Please note that Rosetta functionality for older, unmaintained gaming titles that rely on Intel-based frameworks will continue to be supported. What you need to do:To ensure your apps remain available and your users aren't interrupted by system notifications, add Apple silicon support to your apps now. If you haven’t updated your app yet: Begin the transition immediately. Build and distribute your app as a universal binary, which runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers. Optimize your app for Apple siliconPort your macOS apps to Apple siliconVisit the Apple Developer Forums If you already offer an Apple silicon version: Reach out to your users directly. Encourage them to download and install your latest native version to avoid the notifications on macOS 26.4 or later and ensure the app runs when macOS 27 ships this fall.
