Best value iPhone carrier deals right now In the U.S., the only iPhone deals you can find come from carriers, and have a lot of strings attached. Typically, you have to buy a phone on a multi-year instalment plan and get your discount in the form of monthly bill credits. In the U.S.: AT&T: You can get up to $830 off the iPhone 17 when you trade in an eligible iPhone. The savings transform into monthly credits on your bill for the next 36 months. T-Mobile: The carrier offers the iPhone 17 for free when you switch to T-Mobile and add a line on the Experience plans. The money transforms into bill credits spread over the next 24 months. T-Mobile is offering $1,000 off an iPhone Air. Verizon: Save up to $830 with a trade-in and a new line. This offer is only available online. U.S. Cellular: You can get $999 off an iPhone Air at U.S. Cellular. Xfinity Mobile: If you trade in a qualifying phone you can get up to $830 off a new iPhone 17 series model. Boost Mobile: You can get $850 off the price of the iPhone 17 with Boost’s $65 per month plan. Other carriers to consider: Mint Mobile Optimum Mobile Best Buy (Best Buy will sell you an iPhone with AT&T or Verizon). Is now a good time to buy a new iPhone? Foundry The iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro, launched in September 2025, so the current models are still very new and now is a good time to buy one. Generally the worse time to buy an iPhone is in the months before the new models arrive, which is why we suggest exercising some caution if it’s the iPhone 16e you are considering. The iPhone 16e is Apple’s cheapest iPhone, so it may well appear, but that model is expected to be replaced with the iPhone 17e in the spring of 2026. If you don’t mind that a new model is coming there are some deals on the older handset right now. An even better time to buy a new iPhone is during sales events, such as Amazon Prime Day in July and October, or in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale in November and early December. During that event Amazon was offering £100 off the new iPhone Air and the iPhone 16e, while in the U.S., carriers were providing significant promotions tied to trade-ins and new plans. Which iPhone should you buy? The best model for you will depend on your budget and what features you prioritize. iPhone 17: For most people, the iPhone 17 is considered the best all-around choice this year. It offers significant upgrades over the iPhone 16, including double the base storage (256GB) for the same starting price of $799/£799, a larger 6.3-inch ProMotion display, and improved cameras. This is a great choice for the majority of people. iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max: These are the top-tier models with the best cameras, performance, and battery life. The iPhone 17 Pro Max boasts the longest battery life ever in an iPhone, with up to 37 hours of video playback. However, they come at a premium price, starting at $1,099/£1,099 and $1,199/£1,199 respectively. If you are an avid photographer, or like gaming on your iPhone, this is the one to choose. The Max option is the one for you if you value a really big screen. iPhone Air: This is a new, remarkably thin and light model for those who prioritize cutting-edge design. It’s impressively durable for its slim profile but makes compromises, such as having only a single rear camera and reduced battery life compared to other models. If you like to be the first to try new things and to show off the fact that you have something not many people have, and you love the sim design of the iPhone Air, this is the one for you. Anyron Copeman / Foundry iPhone 16 series: You can save money by opting for an older model like the iPhone 16e, which is a good budget option. However, the standard iPhone 16 is now considered less of a good deal compared to the iPhone 17, which offers twice the storage for only $100 more. Deals on discontinued models like the iPhone 16 Pro can be a great value if you find one. On a budget, the iPhone 16e is probably the best choice, want two cameras on the rear, the iPhone 16 is your best bet. iPhone 15 series: All of Apple’s currently sold iPhones support Apple Intelligence, the new suite of AI features. However, older discontinued models like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus do not. While not having these features isn’t a major drawback right now, it may become more of a hindrance in the future. We would avoid the iPhone 15 for this reason. But if you find an iPhone 15 Pro for sale then at least it supports Apple Intelligence. How to get a trade-in discount Don’t forget you can save when you trade in your old qualifying phone with Apple or other retailers participating in a trade-in program. iPhone System Data and Other storage: What is it and how to get rid of it
Macworld I’m sure this sounds familiar: You’re trying to install the latest iOS release, upgrade to a new iPhone, take photos or record video, or just download that cool app everyone’s talking about, and your iPhone says the storage is full. You’ve already deleted every app you don’t think you need, and there’s still not enough space on your iPhone. So you open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage, and, sure enough, your iPhone is full. Worst of all, a huge chunk of it is just listed as Other (renamed System Data in iOS 15). What’s that supposed to mean? How do you get rid of it? The System Data/Other storage sections are mysterious and confusing, and there’s no one answer that works for everyone, but hopefully, this guide will help you deal with this problem. Latest iPhone release: iPhone 16e (March 2025), iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max (September 2025) Latest iOS release: iOS 26.2 (December 2025) Latest iOS beta: N/A How to view your iPhone storage To see how much storage all your apps and data are taking up on your iPhone’s storage, open the Settings app, select General, then iPhone Storage. At the top, you’ll see a bar graph showing your total iPhone storage and which types of data are filling it up. Beneath that, you’ll find a list of applications on your phone and how much room they take up, both for the app itself and its stored data. It may take several seconds for your iPhone to show the graph, as it takes time to scan and analyze its storage. Even after the chart first appears, you’ll want to wait several seconds more for it to stabilize, as the app list and storage sizes can change while your phone completes its analysis. You’ll find your iPhone storage details a few layers deep in the Settings app. What is System Data (or Other) on iPhone? Your iPhone Storage menu will divide that bar up top into familiar categories like Apps, Media, Photos, and Mail, but also a System Data (iOS 15 and later) or Other category that is sometimes very large. It’s common for System Data to be in the 5GB to 20GB range, but if it’s way over 20GB, it has probably grown out of control. You can scroll all the way down to the bottom of the app list where you will see iOS, which are the files required by the system and are usually around 10GB, and System Data, which are files other than apps and downloads that are collected by iOS. Tap on System Data to see how much space it is taking up. The System Data/Other category is big and varied because it’s a real catch-all category. It comprises system caches, logs, Siri voices (if you’ve downloaded more than one), updates, and so much more. One of the biggest culprits for System Data/Other growing out of hand is streaming lots of music and video. When you download video or music from the iTunes Store, TV app, or Music app, it’s indexed as Media. But streams have caches used to ensure smooth playback, and those are categorized as System Data/Other. Safari’s caches can start to grow pretty large, too. And if you send tons of texts with images or video, the caches for that can start to fill up a lot of space. Your iPhone is supposed to manage these caches to keep your storage from becoming completely full, but it doesn’t always do a great job. Clearing your Safari data might reduce the size of Other. We discuss how to delete Other storage on a Mac and how to delete System Data on a Mac separate articles. How to reduce the size of System Data/Other on an iPhone You can’t get rid of System Data/Other entirely, but you can sometimes reduce its size. First, let’s try clearing your Safari caches. Open Settings > Safari and choose Clear History and Website Data. If you have a lot of Safari tabs open on your iPhone, you might want to close most of them, too. You might also want to change Messages to save fewer old messages. Open Settings, then Messages, and scroll down to the Message History setting. By default, Keep Messages is set to Forever, but you may want to change it to 1 Year or even 30 Days to reduce the data that the Messages app caches. Just beware that doing this will mean old messages will be deleted–so if you have any messages you want to keep find a way to back them up. If you’re a heavy texter, your Messages app might be filling up your storage with a lot of data. Finally, go back to iPhone Storage and look at the apps list. Most of the apps store data that is categorized as Apps, but some will keep caches that are categorized as System Data/Other. If, say, the Podcasts app is taking up a couple of gigabytes of space, it’s likely mostly cached data. Deleting the app and re-downloading it might put a dent in the System Data/Other category. How to free up space taken up by iOS While Apple lets you delete stock iOS apps that you don’t want to free up space, the system still takes up quite a bit of room, in some cases 25GB or more. However, if you’re running an iPhone 15 Pro or later and have Apple Intelligence enabled, it’s taking up more than 10GB of space. Simply turning it off will help you reclaim it. Head over to the Apple Intelligence & Siri tab in Settings and flip the toggle. The free space won’t show up in storage immediately, but the system will be able to use that space to install updates and apps. And you can always turn it back on later. The nuclear option: Backup and reset your iPhone You can go through your iPhone trying to delete every little cache that could grow the size of System Data/Other storage, but if you really want to make it as small as possible, you need to back up your phone and reset it. This can take a little while. The best way to do this is to use your Mac or PC. On a Mac running macOS 10.15 Catalina or later: First, connect your iPhone to your Mac with the bundled USB-C-to-Lightning cable. When prompted on your iPhone, tap “Trust” and enter your passcode. In the Finder sidebar on your Mac, select your iPhone under Locations. Click the General tab. Select “Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac.” To encrypt your backup data and protect it with a password, check the “Encrypt local backup” box. Click Back Up Now. Note: You can also connect your iPhone to your computer wirelessly if you set up syncing over Wi-Fi. Foundry On a Mac running macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier, or a PC On a PC or a Mac with macOS 10.14 or earlier you can use iTunes to back up your phone. After you connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC, select your iPhone by clicking the little phone icon in the upper left, and under Backups, choose “This Computer” and check the “Encrypt local backup” box to protect your backup with a password. Then click the button to Back up now. Reset and restore When the backup is done, disconnect your iPhone, head to Settings > General > Reset, and select Erase All Content and Settings. This will return your iPhone to its factory settings, just like when you took it out of the box. When it restarts and it’s in the initial setup process, re-connect it to your computer with iTunes open, and follow the instructions on the screen to restore your device. This is the longest and most involved way to reduce the size of System Data/Other storage, but it’s also the best. There’s just no way to get it any smaller than it will be after a fresh reset and restore. Can Apple really fix Siri, or is it too far gone?
Macworld Lots of exclusives on Macworld last week, as our tireless code-breaker Filipe Esposito turned up clues to a mystery Apple smart home accessory, HomePod mini and AirTag upgrades, a new display, and much more. All the secrets of the future were laid bare. But the Esposito scoop that caught my eye concerned a rather older story. Siri, poor hapless Siri, has been the laughing stock of voice assistants for years. Some of the time it fails to hear you; other times it dives unwanted into the conversation even though nobody mentioned its name. (Surprisingly often this is triggered by dialogue on Apple TV shows; you’d think they’d check for that sort of thing.) It mishears the name of songs to an almost comical extent, it refuses to do what it’s told, and it behaves constantly with the infuriating confidence of the very stupid. Given that Siri is baked into pretty much every Apple product, you’d think that fixing it would be a top priority. Sure enough, back in June 2024, Apple announced that it was going to release a new enhanced version of Siri, powered by AI, to address all these problems. Although, of course, Apple didn’t actually acknowledge the problems, instead using vaguely positive phraseology about becoming “more natural, more contextually relevant, and more personal.” Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed that enhanced Siri still hasn’t arrived, a mere 18 months on; there are no signs of it becoming more natural, it remains blithely irrelevant, and the only personal thing about it is my choice of language when it gets a simple command wrong yet again. So it was… I won’t say pleasing, but I will say interesting to hear last week that it’s now looking likely to land in spring 2026 alongside the so-called HomePad. Which is better than nothing, as they say; at least the project hasn’t been completely cancelled, like AirPower or the slimmer and lighter version of Vision Pro. But another phrase that springs to mind is “Too little, too late.” Most obviously, Apple has squandered a great deal of trust and goodwill over the past couple of years by promising things that aren’t ready (and which may never have existed at all) and then failing to deliver them. Trust in a tech company’s honesty and competence is a vital asset. Do you trust Apple to provide worthwhile software updates for the life of your products, and to safeguard your security and privacy? If there’s a bug on your Mac, do you trust Apple to patch it in a timely fashion? Probably less so than was the case five years ago. It might seem entitled and fanboyish to take it personally when a corporation fails to launch an expected product. But in this case, it is personal: Siri’s performance, and Apple’s continued failure to address that performance, affects our daily experience with the iPhone, the Mac, the Apple Watch, and of course the HomePod. Siri 2.0 isn’t a new product we’ve been having to wait for, but a needed fix for the products we already have. And anyone who stayed inside Apple’s walled garden in hopes of the voice assistant getting better was kept there under false pretences. It all could have been so much better. Siri should be the user’s entry point to the Apple ecosystem, and the culmination of the company’s intuitive philosophy. No matter which device you’re using, no matter the operating system or the app, you simply say out loud what you want to happen. What could be more user-friendly? Almost anything, it turns out. For years now, customers have been trained to regard their Apple products with suspicion. If I use this device in the way that is theoretically the most convenient, they quickly come to understand, there is a good chance it will go wrong. Which is hardly the message Apple wants to send. And while spring could represent a new beginning for the beleaguered voice assistant, it will also mark the start of a very long and difficult process of reputational recovery. Macworld New iOS and iPadOS updates don’t just add lots of new features to your iPhone. There are also updates to improve the security and reliability of your devices, and the latest release is no exception. There are 25 new security updates in iOS/iPadOS 26.2, and if you can’t or don’t want to update to iOS 26 yet, 20 of them are available in a separate iOS/iPadOS 18.7.3 release. Of particular note are a pair of WebKit vulnerabilities where “processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution.” Apple says it is aware of a report that these bugs were used in a highly sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals, in a version of iOS prior to iOS 26. These are zero-day flaws, meaning they were previously unknown. There are quite a few similar WebKit fixes in these releases, in which race conditions, buffer overflows, and other memory tricks could be used to run code on your iPhone after visiting specifically crafted malicious web content. There are many other frameworks and apps with important security fixes as well, including some commonly used apps: App Store Impact: An app may be able to access sensitive payment tokens Description: A permissions issue was addressed with additional restrictions. CVE-2025-46288: floeki, Zhongcheng Li from IES Red Team of ByteDance. FaceTime Impact: Password fields may be unintentionally revealed when remotely controlling a device over FaceTime Description: This issue was addressed with improved state management. CVE-2025-43542: Yiğit Ocak Photos Impact: Photos in the Hidden Photos Album may be viewed without authentication Description: A configuration issue was addressed with additional restrictions. CVE-2025-43428: an anonymous researcher, Michael Schmutzer of Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt So if you’re on iOS 26, it’s best to update to iOS 26.2 as soon as possible. If you’re not on iOS 26 yet and don’t want to or can’t upgrade, be sure to grab iOS 18.7.3 instead. You can get either update by going to the Settings app, then General and Software Update.

Satechi FindAll Review: Rechargeable AirTag Alternatives With Find My Support
Satechi offers several accessories that include Find My integration, all of which either have more convenient form factors than the AirTag or expanded versatility. The Satechi FindAll range includes a Passport Cover, Glasses Case, Luggage Tag, Card, and Keychain, several of which I've been testing for the last few months. The entire range is made from a vegan leather material that's pleasant to the touch while also durable, and colors that include Black, Sand, and Desert Rose. Prices are all from $30 to $60, and Satechi often has sales. FindAll Glasses Case The $50 FindAll Glasses case has a triangle shape that should fit most glasses and sunglasses options, though I think it could struggle to fit some of the sunglasses with wider lenses. It opens up fully for access to glasses, and then folds into thirds with a magnetic flap to seal it up. Size wise, this isn't exactly a compact case. I wouldn't want to carry it in a smaller purse or backpack, but it fits well in a larger bag. It's rigid, so it offers protection for glasses even if it's tossed in a bag with a bunch of other items. The case is 6.4 inches long, 2.7 inches wide, and 2.6 inches tall. When it's not in use, you can fold it flat. I have the black version, and it doesn't seem to show fingerprints or wear even after a few months of use. The lighter colors might be easier to stain, but the vegan leather that Satechi is using seems durable. I like the idea of a glasses case with ‌Find My‌, but it only seems useful for a person with a lot of discipline. If I'm losing my sunglasses, it's because I'm not putting them back in the case, not because I misplace the case. I've never been good about returning my glasses to their case, but even if I was, I'm not sure I'd lose the case. I usually have the case in my bag or in one spot in my house, so it's just not an item I tend to lose. With that technicality out of the way, it's a useful case. It offers solid protection, and it could be useful to have if you're often traveling or tend to swap glasses and put one in the case while wearing another. People who do that might have more of a tendency to put the case somewhere random. Satechi says the case is compatible with the VITURE Pro XR glasses, XReal Air 2, and Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, and it makes sense to use with those. The back of the case has a circle on it, to denote where the magnetic charging ring is located. It's able to charge via MagSafe or Qi, and it only needs to be charged every eight months or so. There's a little LED that comes on when it's attached to a charger, so you can tell when it's done. It has all of the same ‌Find My‌ capabilities as any ‌Find My‌ device, including alerts, sound options, and more, but I'll have more to say about it below. FindAll Luggage Tag The $45 FindAll Luggage Tag is a clever combination of a luggage tag and an ‌AirTag‌. If it didn't mention ‌Find My‌ on the inside of the tag, I'm not sure anyone would view it as anything other than a typical luggage tag. It's 3.3 inches tall and 2.9 inches wide. It's basically a circle-shaped tag with an openable front that includes a piece of paper where you can write down your information. An adjustable buckle with three holes can attach to your luggage or a bag, and like the glasses case, it charges via Qi or ‌MagSafe‌. I like the premium look and feel of the FindAll Luggage Tag. I generally think it's probably safer to have a tracker inside of a suitcase, but because of the buckle, this isn't going to snap off or come loose without effort. The vegan leather material feels sturdy, and it's stitched well. I pulled on it as hard as I could and even lifted a fully packed suitcase by the tag, and so far there's no damage. The flip-down front that houses your personal information is great, but I do wish the plastic cover inside came up a little higher. One thing I'm always worried about with a luggage tag is it getting wet or damaged in some way. There is partial protection for the paper inside the FindAll Luggage Tag and the magnet snaps closed tight, but I still worry a little about water intrusion. FindAll Card The $35 FindAll Card is a card-shaped ‌Find My‌ device that's meant to be tucked inside a wallet. There are a lot of these kinds of ‌Find My‌ wallet devices available now, including some that are super cheap on Amazon, but I like the peace of mind of having something from a reputable brand. Satechi's version is credit card sized (3.35 inches long by 2.13 inches wide), and it fits into the credit card section of any wallet. It's 0.09 inches thick, which isn't the thinnest card that I've tested, but it's also not the thickest. Satechi designed it with beveled edges, and that helps it look and feel slimmer than it is. The card comes in black, beige, and pink, and it is nice to have an option other than black available. I tested the black, and the glossy material that it's made from is shiny and smooth to the touch, but it's going to pick up fingerprints. I like the smooth texture because it slips into a wallet easily, plus it's IP66 water resistant so if your wallet falls out of your pocket into a puddle, it'll still be locatable. The FindAll Card is nondescript with just a small Satechi logo on the front. If someone stole your wallet, it could potentially be mistaken for a keycard, but a savvy thief would probably know exactly what it is. I like the card-style item trackers because you can also tuck them inside other things. I put one in my planner so I don't misplace it, and they also work in books, sunglasses cases, laptop cases, my Steam Deck case, and other slimmer, flatter items where an ‌AirTag‌ isn't the best option. The FindAll Card charges via ‌MagSafe‌ or Qi, which is convenient. I haven't had to recharge it yet, but Satechi says it lasts for up to 16 months before needing a recharge. I think it's got the longest battery life of any card that I've tested so far. FindAll Keychain Satechi's $30 FindAll Keychain is one of my favorite keychain-style ‌Find My‌ items. It's larger than an ‌AirTag‌ with a square shape (1.3 inches square), but it also has an integrated battery and a keyring at the top so I can attach it to anything without having to get an additional accessory. I like the soft-touch vegan leather material in this form factor, and it's lightweight at 14.3 grams even with the metal keyring. The leather material feels strong, so even though there's just a loop of material holding the keychain to the keyring, it doesn't feel like it's going to come apart. Like the rest of the Satechi FindAll line, the FindAll Keychain can be popped onto a Qi or ‌MagSafe‌ charger when it's out of battery, and that's a huge benefit over AirTags. I am bad about ordering new ‌AirTag‌ batteries and swapping them out when they die, and rechargeable batteries are so much more convenient. Satechi says the battery can last for up to 12 months without needing to be recharged. Find My Integration All of Satechi's FindAll devices can be added to the Items tab in the ‌Find My‌ app, so you can track them right alongside AirTags and your other Apple devices. Satechi's products are almost identical in functionality to the ‌AirTag‌, but there is no Precision Finding. Precision Finding requires Ultra Wideband (UWB), and these don't support it. That makes a big difference when you want something that you can locate precisely indoors, but less of a difference tracking at long range. If you lose your keys indoors and often need to hunt them down, the option to play a sound helps, but the ability to get directed right to them over short distances with Precision Finding is unbeatable. The FindAll accessories are limited to Bluetooth 5.4, which isn't as precise. Satechi says there's a Bluetooth range of 10 to 20 meters when indoors, and 20 to 50 meters when outdoors. When you're out of Bluetooth range, you can use the ‌Find My‌ network. The FindAll devices connect to the same ‌Find My‌ network as the ‌AirTag‌, allowing you to leverage Apple products owned by other people to track your items even over great distances. As long as there's an Apple device with cellular or Wi-Fi near a ‌Find My‌ item, it can relay its location back to you. There is a built-in Play a Sound feature, and Satechi's products all list an 80 to 90 decibel range. It's loud enough to hear indoors if you're in the same room and it's buried in a bag or a wallet. Outdoors was a little tougher with loud ambient noise, but between the Bluetooth range and the sound, I was able to find the Keychain after tossing it into the woods. Outdoors, the ‌Find My‌ app is able to direct me close enough to the area of the FindAll device is located to hear it making a sound, provided it's not muffled the fabric of a bag or something similar. Item Left Behind notifications are available too, and that's one of the most useful features of a ‌Find My‌ device or an ‌AirTag‌. You can get a notification when you get out of range of your item, which immediately alerts you if you've left behind your keys, wallet, bag, or whatever else is attached to one of Satechi's FindAll devices. You can also share item locations with other people, so if your luggage is lost at the airport, you can allow an airline employee access to the FindAll device to track it down. Similarly, you can share locations with family members, and set it up to provide your name and information when an item you've lost is located by someone else. Bottom Line Satechi's FindAll series is an upgrade over the ‌AirTag‌ with different form factors and the option to recharge via ‌MagSafe‌ or Qi, but it does lack Precision Finding. For something that you're likely to lose indoors or in close quarters where it's difficult to hear sound, it might be worth opting for an ‌AirTag‌ for access to Precision Finding, but for general tracking and item left behind notifications, Satechi's trackers are great. I've been using a couple of ‌Find My‌ items without Precision Finding for several years now, and I've never missed it. My wallet, for example, has a ‌Find My‌ card, and I always get item left behind notifications and can accurately track its location when I've left it behind. Basically, Bluetooth tracking will bring you to the house that an item is in, but Precision Finding can help you locate where it is inside the house as long as you're very close. Sometimes that functionality can be replaced with sound, and sometimes it can't. The Satechi FindAll devices have been with me for about six months, and I haven't run into problems with them. Batteries have not run out, the notifications have been reliable, and I've been able to put them to the test multiple times. I have run into some item trackers that die a few months after purchase or stop working in some capacity, but so far, Satechi's products are performing well. In terms of price, some of Satechi's products are more expensive than the ‌AirTag‌ (which is $29), but there are frequent discounts that drop the price of items like the Keychain below ‌AirTag‌ pricing. Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in fall 2026, and it's shaping up to include three standout features that could set it apart from the competition. The book-style foldable will reportedly feature an industry-first 24-megapixel under-display camera built into the inner display, according to a recent JP Morgan equity research report. That would be a major leap over existing Android foldables, which typically use lower-resolution under-screen cameras of 4 or 8 megapixels. If the leak is accurate, the quality bump suggests Apple has achieved a breakthrough in light transmittance and image clarity that has eluded other manufacturers. As for the display itself, all the indications suggest Apple has solved "the crease problem" that has plagued most foldable smartphones. Apple is said to have worked intensively on the hinge and display to minimize creasing, and the latest report from Chinese site UDN claims the foldable iPhone will be the first crease-free foldable on the market. On the battery front, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said the device will use high-density battery cells, and Korean sources indicate Apple is testing capacities in the 5,400–5,800 mAh range, while Chinese leaker Instant Digital has today claimed the final capacity will "definitely" exceed 5,000 mAh. That means it could be the largest battery ever fitted to an iPhone, surpassing even the iPhone 17 Pro Max's 5,088 mAh cell. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 packs a 4,400 mAh battery, while the Google Pixel Fold achieves 4,821 mAh. The Honor Magic V5 manages 5,820 mAh using silicon-carbon technology, but the vivo X Fold 5 boasts 6,000 mAh, which is currently the largest in its class. Multiple sources agree the foldable iPhone will include a 7.8-inch main display when unfolded, a 5.5-inch cover display, and Touch ID rather than Face ID. The device will feature four cameras in total: one front hole-punch camera, the aforementioned under-screen inner camera, and a dual-lens 48-megapixel rear system. Multiple reports have suggested the foldable iPhone will be priced between $2,000 and $2,500 in the United States, which could make it the most expensive iPhone ever. As part of its Black Friday deals, Walmart is currently selling the five-year-old MacBook Air with the M1 chip for just $549 in the United States. Walmart began selling the MacBook Air with the M1 chip for $699 in March 2024. The price later dropped to $649, then to $599, and now to $549. Apple first released the MacBook Air with the M1 chip in November 2020, as one of the first Macs with an Apple silicon chip, instead of an Intel processor. The configuration being sold for $549 includes 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, with Silver and Space Gray color options available. Gold is currently sold out. These are new MacBook Air units — not refurbished or open box. Apple discontinued the MacBook Air with the M1 chip last year, after it launched models with the M3 chip, and it has since updated the MacBook Air with the M4 chip. Prior to being discontinued, the model with the M1 chip was being sold for a starting price of $999 brand new, but Amazon sometimes offered it on sale for $899 or less. While the MacBook Air with the M1 chip is five years old, it is still a capable machine for many average day-to-day tasks. Singapore has ordered Apple to block or filter messages on iMessage that impersonate government agencies, requiring the company to implement new anti-spoofing protections by December as part of efforts to curb rising online scams, the Straits Times reports. Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that it had issued an Implementation Directive to Apple under the Online Criminal Harms Act, instructing the company to prevent iMessage accounts and group chats from using names that mimic Singapore government agencies or the "gov.sg" sender ID. The directive also applies to Google Messages, with both companies required to comply by November 30. MHA said the order was necessary because iMessage does not currently support the safeguards built into Singapore's registered SMS sender ID system. Since July 2024, legitimate messages sent by Singapore government agencies through traditional SMS channels have used the "gov.sg" sender ID to help the public verify authenticity. Messages sent via iMessage, however, do not pass through the same ID registry and therefore allow scammers to present themselves using identical or near-identical identifiers. The ministry cited more than 120 police reports in which scammers impersonated registered sender IDs. As part of the directive, Apple must now ensure that profile names of unknown iMessage senders are either not displayed or are shown less prominently than the phone numbers associated with the account. Along with the Opus update, Anthropic is updating its apps, the Claude Developer Platform, and Claude Code. There are tools for longer-running agents, and options to use Claude in Excel, Chrome, and on the desktop. In the Claude apps, users will no longer run into limits during a long conversation. Claude is able to automatically summarize earlier context, which means the conversation can keep going endlessly. Claude for Chrome is available to all Max users, and Claude for Excel beta access is now available to all Max, Team, and Enterprise users. Claude Code is now available in the desktop app, and with Opus 4.5, it is able to build more precise plans and execute them more thoroughly. Claude is able to ask clarifying questions upfront and then build a user-editable plan before executing. Claude Opus 4.5 is available today across Anthropic's apps and its API. ChatGPT will suggest shopping research automatically when you ask it a shopping-related question, but you can also select "shopping research" from the "+" menu. When a research session has begun, ChatGPT will open a visual interface where you can share feedback to guide the research, providing feedback on what you're interested in. You'll need to click through to a retailer's site to make a purchase, but eventually, ChatGPT will be able to make automatic purchases through ChatGPT when shopping from merchants that are part of Instant Checkout. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and io Products creator Jony Ive forged a friendship that led to OpenAI's acquisition of io, and subsequently, an AI-based hardware product that both Altman and Ive believe is a reimagination of what it means to use a computer. The duo recently did an interview with Emerson Collective founder Laurene Powell Jobs, providing insight into what they're working on. There's now an established hardware prototype, and while Altman and Ive didn't explain what it is in plain language, the interview has hints of its design and functionality. Here are several ways that Altman and Ive described their AI hardware device: It breaks the constraints of the "same kind of computer that we've been using for a long time." Research started with a question about what it means that the device "is going to be able to know everything you've ever thought about, read, said?" It will be a "sort of active participant" that's proactive in "a not annoying way." Current devices and apps are like "walking through Times Square in New York" with flashing lights, crowds of people, noises, etc. It "doesn't make our lives peaceful and calm" or let us "focus on other stuff," which is what Ive and Altman wanted to address. If you have an AI that you trust to do things for you and filter things out with "incredible contextual awareness of your whole life," then you can go for a vibe that's not walking through Times Square. Ive and Altman's device aims to bring some of the spirit of "sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake and in the mountains and just sort of enjoying the peace and calm." Ive said he prefers solutions that "teeter on appearing almost naive in their simplicity and their feel." He also likes "incredibly intelligent, sophisticated products that you want to touch" and use "almost carelessly." Ive told Altman that the design is right when you "want to lick it or take a bite out of it," and with the current prototype, Altman got that feeling. "The degree to which Jony chipped away at every little thing that this doesn't need to do or that doesn't need to be there is remarkable." "There's something about when a design gets like so simple and beautiful. And playful, for lack of a better word." There aren't a lot of products with "humor" in "this area" and there is a desire "not to take ourselves quite so seriously even though these are serious times." Altman said that early on, Jony said "we are going to make people smile. We're going to make people feel joy. Whatever the product does, it has to do that." Altman said it's "lovely" to "have some whimsy back." The prototypes are "jaw-droppingly good" and "exciting." Rumors have described the device that io is working on as an AI phone without a screen, a "third core device" after a MacBook and an iPhone that's unobtrusive and able to sit in a pocket or on a desk, an iPod Shuffle-sized device that's neck worn, and a pocket-sized gadget that's screen-free but contextually aware of your life with microphones and cameras. It is not any kind of wearable like glasses, a watch, or earbuds. Ive and Altman expect to have a device ready to hit the market in less than two years from now. To connect with even more customers, we are making some changes in our sales team that affect a small number of roles. We are continuing to hire and those employees can apply for new roles. While Apple says it is restructuring some of the sales team, affected employees apparently believe that Apple wants to move more sales to third-party retailers. Pushing sales through retailers allows Apple to save money by cutting salary costs. Apple is giving employees over a month to find a new role. Discussions are apparently ongoing and CNN's content could return if a new deal is reached. CNN recently launched a paid subscription service and began placing more of its reporting behind a paywall. The network now offers a $29.99-per-year articles-only tier and a $69.99-per-year "All Access" plan that combines written stories with its streaming service. Major news firms including People and Condé Nast brands have leaned into ‌Apple News‌, but other media companies have been cautious about adopting the platform since its debut. Samsung Follows Apple's AI Strategy With Perplexity-Powered Bixby
While Apple is moving toward a multi-model AI strategy for Siri, Samsung appears to be following a similar path by integrating Perplexity's AI into its Bixby assistant for the upcoming Galaxy S26. According to the well-regarded tipster @chunvn8888 on X (Twitter), the arrangement would see Samsung's Bixby continuing to handle basic on-device requests such as toggling settings and activating system features, while Perplexity's models would take on queries that involve complex reasoning and generative tasks. Currently, Apple Intelligence blends on-device models for relatively simple tasks with OpenAI's ChatGPT for more complex reasoning and generation. A Samsung-Perplexity pairing would replicate this split. However, Samsung already maintains a deep AI partnership with Google, and newer Galaxy devices ship with Gemini-powered features embedded directly into its custom One UI interface. Choosing Perplexity suggests Samsung is widening its model pool rather than consolidating around Google's ecosystem. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing a broader expansion of its own multi-model strategy. A recent Bloomberg report claims the more capable version of Siri under development will rely on Google's Gemini for advanced tasks such as summarisation and multi-step planning, with Apple's own models continuing to power select features. The more advanced Siri was originally meant to arrive with iOS 18, but Apple is said to have recognized the need to rework the assistant's core architecture, which has pushed the release to a software update expected early next year. Confirmed: Bixby will have Perplexity integrated into it. Basic tasks will be handled by Bixby while complicated, more thinking tasks will be backed by Perplexity.
