MacBook Air pricing: How the M5 compares to the M4 models At the beginning of February 2026, Apple changed the way the online Apple Store works. Previously, the store presented a clear selection of configurations and buying options, allowing shoppers to choose the model that best suited their needs and budget. Now, customers start with a base configuration and add options – such as more RAM or additional storage – until they reach the specification they want. With this new approach, it is less obvious upfront how much an ideal configuration will cost, which we think is a disadvantage for buyers. Foundry The current MacBook Air lineup features the M5 chip and was just updated in March 2026, so now is a great time to buy. It isn’t just a chip update, Apple has also doubled the storage and added a new 32GB RAM option, so if you see a deal on an older model make sure that the price compares favourably to the new model. There are certain times of year that can be better times to purchase than others, with Black Friday being one of them. You can also find good savings during Amazon’s Spring sale and Prime Days in July and October. There is also Apple holds a “Back To Uni” event which runs in the US from June to September, in the UK from July to October, and in Australia between January and March. Most recently that deal has included free AirPods or Apple Pencils with select purchases. The deals rarely come from Apple itself. While Apple will sometimes offer vouchers as an incentive to buy a new Mac (that’s Apple’s usual Black Friday giveaway), the company never discounts prices. Apple does sell refurbished Macs at a lower price though, so that might be something to consider. There is more information on refurbished options below. Which MacBook Air to buy Foundry The MacBook Air offers a great combination of performance, portability, and now features at a starting price of $1,099, making it an excellent choice for general consumers and students. The choice is mainly between the 13-inch and 15-inch models, with the selection depending on whether you would value the larger screen over the better portability of the smaller model. Other factors to consider are: Power & performance: Current MacBook Air models are powered by the M5 chip, which has a 10-core CPU and either an 8-core or 10-core GPU. This is more than enough power for everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and light creative work. A few generations ago, MacBook Air models only offered 8GB RAM, so, if you are looking at refurbs, we recommend that you only consider models with 16GB RAM as a minimum. The MacBook Pro is better for professionals who need more power. Storage: Base models used to start with 256GB of storage, but Apple has now increased this to 512GB. That’s a better storage capacity if you plan to store and work with large files. The internal storage cannot be upgraded later so make sure you get enough. Design and Portability: The MacBook Air is light and thin, with the 11-inch model weighing less than three pounds (1.24kg/2.7lb), making it easy to carry around. Display: There is a choice of 13-inch or 15-inch display: the 15-inch M5 model is a great value option if you want a larger screen without the higher cost of a MacBook Pro. It starts at $1,299, which is a relatively small price increase over the 13-inch model. The M5 MacBook Air support two external displays, thanks to its Thunderbolt 4 ports. Previous models – M3 and older – were more limited when it came to supporting external displays. Budget: The best choice depends on your budget and performance needs, as there can be compelling deals on older MacBook Air models. If you are looking at an older model, just be sure to check that you are comparing like with like, especially when it comes to storage. Uh-oh, PC makers are doubting Apple again
Macworld Apple’s announcement of the $599 MacBook Neo last week was a bombshell for the company’s fans and customers. But the announcement had reverberations far beyond the Apple ecosystem. In an earnings call on Tuesday, Asus co-CEO S.Y. Hsu explained that such a radical change of direction for the Cupertino company is a big deal for manufacturers of lower-priced Windows PCs: “In the past, Apple’s pricing situation has always been high,” he said (translated from Chinese, and via PC Mag). “So for [the company] to release a very budget-friendly product, this is obviously a shock to the entire industry.” However, Hsu doesn’t seem to think the Neo will have much of an impact on the budget PC laptop market. He cited the Neo’s non-upgradable 8GB of memory as a factor that could limit its appeal, and described it disparagingly as an iPad-esque content consumption device. “This is different from the use case of a mainstream notebook,” he said, almost convincingly. Still, Hsu admitted that the Windows PC industry had been carefully following those rumors and trying to decide how to respond if and when such a product was launched. While the Neo’s specific details, and particularly its price tag, were a closely guarded secret until the last moment, its existence had been rumored since the middle of last year. “In the entire PC ecosystem,” he said, “there have been a lot of discussions about how to compete with this product.” However, those discussions have not been entirely pessimistic, based on Hsu’s bullish verdict on the new MacBook and its prospects of competing with Windows notebooks. The problem for Windows PC manufacturers is that most reviewers don’t really agree. In our MacBook Neo review, for example, we found the device to be “an excellent choice as a general productivity computer” and praised its single-core CPU performance. “You can technically do anything,” writes my colleague Roman Loyola. “Content production, software development, database management, and more.” He concedes that pro-level tasks will push the Neo beyond its limits, but the same would likely be true of a $599 netbook. So unless Asus can boost performance while keeping prices down—not easy when there’s a memory shortage—its CEO may have a few more worries ahead. Can MacBook Neo charge faster with a better charger?
Macworld If you buy a MacBook Neo, you’ll get a 20W USB-C Power Adapter, the smallest charger of any Apple laptop. Apple sells higher-wattage adapters ranging from 35 watts up to 140 watts, and you can find third-party adapters with more features. The Neo’s charger is clunky and has just one port, so most people who buy one will likely use a different adapter that delivers more power. However, the MacBook Neo doesn’t officially support fast charging like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Apple never mentioned fast charging during its Apple Experience on March 4, and Apple’s support document about MacBook fast charging also doesn’t include the Neo. So it shouldn’t matter what kind of charger you use with the MacBook Neo. But we wanted to make sure there’s no difference if a higher-wattage adapter is used on the Neo. We tried charging a Neo’s battery at 20 percent to see how much it would gain in 30 minutes using Apple’s 96W USB-C Power Adapter and the bundled 20W USB-C Power Adapter. Here are the results. ChargerChange after 30 minutes20W USB-C Power Adapter+15%96W USB-C Power Adapter+30% That’s… not the same. It also doesn’t fit Apple’s definition of fast charging, which is up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes. So we did some digging. Below are screenshots of the Battery Health 2 app, which I used to take a look at the charging rates. The shot on the left is with the 96W charger; the right shot is with the 20W charger. In the section labeled “Charging With,” the 96W charger was at twice the rate of the 20W charger. While on The Full Nerd podcast, we plugged in a 250-watt charger, and the rate was similar to the 96W charger. It appears that the charging rate for the MacBook Neo is capped at around 24 Watts if you use a charger that’s faster than the bundled 20W charger. But you don’t get the “50 percent in 30 minutes” that Apple touts with the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro fast charging, which is probably why they don’t promote it as fast-charging capable. We’ve contacted Apple for comment on our findings, and will update this article if we hear anything.

Ahead of the launch of new iPad Air models equipped with the M4 chip, preliminary Geekbench benchmark results have surfaced for the device, giving us an idea of how its performance compares to the prior-generation M3 ‌iPad Air‌. A pair of benchmarks from the 13-inch M4 ‌iPad Air‌ with Wi-Fi + Cellular (iPad16,11) suggest the M4 ‌iPad Air‌ CPU is 17.3 percent faster in single-core performance and 7.9 percent faster in multi-core performance. The benchmarks show single-core scores of 3438 and 3714 and multi-core scores of 12885 and 12296, translating to an average single-core score of 3576 and an average multi-core score of 12591. The prior-generation 13-inch M3 ‌iPad Air‌ has an average single-core score of 3048 and an average multi-core score of 11667 on Geekbench. The M4 ‌iPad Air‌ is equipped with an 8-core CPU featuring three performance cores and five efficiency cores, along with a 9-core GPU. Apple previously used the M4 in the iPad Pro, but the version in the ‌iPad Pro‌ had up to a 10-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU, so the M4 ‌iPad Air‌ does not match the M4 ‌iPad Pro‌ in CPU performance. The 13-inch M4 iPad Pro has a single-core score of 3704 and a multi-core score of 13805, so it offers 3.6 percent faster single-core CPU performance and 9.6 percent faster multi-core CPU performance. OpenAI today updated its most popular ChatGPT model, debuting GPT-5.3 Instant. GPT-5.3 Instant is supposed to provide more accurate answers and better contextualized results when searching the web. The update also cuts down on unnecessary dead ends, caveats, and overly declarative phrasing, plus it has fewer hallucinations. According to OpenAI, it tweaked the Instant model to address complaints about tone, relevance, and conversational flow, which are issues that don't show up in benchmarks. GPT-5.2 Instant had a "cringe" tone that could be overbearing or make unsubstantiated assumptions about user intent or emotions. The new model will have a more natural conversational style and will cut back on dramatic phrases like "Stop. Take a breath." Users found that GPT-5.2 Instant would refuse questions it should have been able to answer, or respond in ways that felt overly cautious around sensitive topics. GPT-5.3 Instant cuts down on refusals and tones down overly defensive or moralizing preambles when answering a question. The model will no longer "over-caveat" after assuming bad intent from the user. GPT-5.3 Instant also provides higher-quality answers based on information from the web. OpenAI says that it is able to better balance what it finds online with its own knowledge, so it is less likely to overindex on web results. GPT-5.3 Instant is available to all ChatGPT users now. If you still have a Mac with an Intel chip inside, you're not going to want to pick up one of the new Studio Display or Studio Display XDR models. According to Apple's list of compatible Macs, neither model will work with an Intel-based Mac. Apple says that the Studio Display is compatible with a long list of Macs dating back to 2020, but they all have M-series chips inside. 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 and later) 14-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (2021 and later) 13-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (M1, 2020 and later) 15-inch MacBook Air (2023 and later) 13-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ (‌M1‌, 2020 and later) Mac Studio (2022 and later) Mac mini (2020 and later) Mac Pro (2023 and later) 24-inch iMac (2021 and later) Apple started phasing out Intel Macs in 2020 when it released the first devices with Apple silicon. Intel chips were phased out in the ‌MacBook Air‌ in 2020 and ‌MacBook Pro‌ line in 2021, and other Macs followed. The last Intel Mac was the ‌Mac Pro‌, and the Intel version was discontinued in 2023. Apple hasn't sold an Intel Mac for close to three years. With Intel Macs long discontinued, Apple is phasing out support as well. macOS Tahoe will be the final software update for Intel-based Macs, and Intel Macs will not get macOS 27. While Intel Macs will not be updated past ‌macOS Tahoe‌, Apple plans to provide security updates for three additional years. The new Studio Display XDR features a mini-LED display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, but you'll need a newer Mac to get support for the full 120Hz. According to Apple, Macs that have an M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, or M3 will only support the Studio Display XDR at 60Hz. All other features remain available. For the full 120Hz refresh rate, you'll need to have a Mac with one of the following chips: ‌M2‌ Pro, ‌M2‌ Max, ‌M2‌ Ultra M3 Pro, M3 Max, M3 Ultra M4 Pro, M4 Max M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max All Macs that have an Apple silicon chip can be used with the Studio Display XDR with the upcoming macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 update. As for the iPad, The M5 iPad Pro supports the Studio Display at 120Hz, but all other compatible ‌iPad‌ models are limited to 60Hz. While the starting price has gone up, the price for SSD upgrades has technically shifted down. Upgrading to 1TB previously would have resulted in a machine that costs $1,799, but that same base configuration is now $1,699 and $100 more affordable. Upgrading to 2TB from the base starting storage used to be $600, but now the 2TB upgrade is $400. The 4TB upgrade is $1,000, $200 less than the $1,200 that it used to cost. In short, Apple has removed the 512GB storage option and dropped the price of SSD storage at the same time. The base machine is more expensive, but you're getting a higher capacity SSD for less. Apple has de-emphasized stock configurations and options are no longer listed on the purchase page for Macs. There are still stock models that will be sold in stores, however, and those pre-configured machines have been updated. Apple has removed the base model that had 512GB of storage and 16GB RAM, replacing it with the version that has 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. There's also a $1,899 stock model with 1TB SSD and 24GB memory, and a new higher-end model with the 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM for $2,099. Apple to Unveil More New Products Today
Apple on Monday unveiled the iPhone 17e and an updated iPad Air, but it is not finished yet. Apple promised "a big week ahead," and it is expected to announce additional new products this Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4. The most likely possibilities for Tuesday include updated 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M5 chip, and higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. And for Wednesday's grand finale, Apple will likely unveil its rumored lower-cost MacBook with an A18 Pro chip. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman:Monday's announcements kick off several days of Apple product reveals, a wave that's expected to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday. The company has also been planning to introduce new laptops this week, including its first-entry level MacBook with an iPhone-grade chip.Of course, there could always be a surprise or two in store. We are still waiting for new models of the Apple TV and HomePod mini, but those might be delayed until the more personalized version of Siri finally launches at some point this year. Other rumored products in the pipeline for the first half of 2026 include Mac Studio models with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, two new Studio Display models, and an all-new Apple smart home hub with a companion Apple-designed smart home camera. There is no sign of an iPad 12 with Apple Intelligence support yet. That was expected this week, but it likely would have been unveiled alongside the iPad Air with the M4 chip, so perhaps the entry-level iPad is not being updated yet after all. However, nothing is ruled out yet, so we shall see what Apple has planned over the next two days. The announcements will be capped off with an "Apple Experience" in New York, London, and Shanghai on Wednesday at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. At these gatherings, invited journalists and content creators will likely receive hands-on time with the new products. Anthropic is aiming to lure customers from ChatGPT and Gemini with a new memory import tool that's available to free users as of today. Conversations and memories from other AI providers can be imported into Claude, so new users will not need to start from scratch. Users can import preferences and context from an AI service like ChatGPT using a prompt that Anthropic prepared for other chatbots. The prompt instructs the AI to prepare a list of memories and context from past conversations, with formatting that's easily digestible by Claude. I'm moving to another service and need to export my data. List every memory you have stored about me, as well as any context you've learned about me from past conversations. Output everything in a single code block so I can easily copy it. Claude has an input box for the exported data, and the information is added to Claude's memory. Claude has supported memory for paid plans since October 2025, but there was no option for free users to take advantage of the feature. With a memory feature now available for switching, users will not need to sign up for a paid plan to move their AI instructions and preferences to Claude. Anthropic says that memory will remain an option on the free plan. Enabling memory and then importing information into Claude can be done through the Memory section of Claude's settings. Last month, Anthropic took advantage of ChatGPT's decision to start displaying ads for free users, promising to keep Claude ad-free. Anthropic then added new features for free users, including options for compaction, creating files, using connectors, and accessing skills. Along with memory, those options were previously limited to paid subscribers. As of now, Claude is the top free iOS app in the App Store, a spot normally held by ChatGPT.
