Apple’s new MacBook has one job
Macworld Next week is going to be a big one for Apple. Along with a new iPhone and iPads, Apple is rumored to launch its most anticipated Mac release since Apple silicon’s debut. According to reports, Apple is going to release a new entry in the MacBook lineup, a budget laptop that can compete with Chromebooks and cheap Windows laptops. A laptop that Apple hopes will grow the Mac installed base. A laptop for customers priced out of the Mac market. That’s great, especially since it’s something customers have been wanting for a long time. But there’s another reason why I’m excited about this new laptop: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that this laptop will be available in “playful colors,” with yellow, green, blue, and pink among the possibilities. Yes, that’s what I’m most excited about. A palette of color options means more than a wider array of choices. It signals that Apple is bringing a little fun back to its laptop lineup, an aspect that’s been missing for way too long. Orange enabler Until recently, I played it as safe as Apple with my own color choices–black, silver, gray, anything neutral. Then, two years ago, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and buy an orange car. Not only do I not regret it, but I also love it. I can remember being at a stoplight once, surrounded by four black and gray Teslas (which are everywhere in San Francisco). Suddenly, Elle Woods and I had something in common. Elle Woods and her orange iBook in Legally Blonde.MGM Then last fall, I got a Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max–without that car, and how it changed my perspective, I don’t think I would’ve picked it. For a while, I appreciated the back of the phone almost as much as its screen. The color just made me smile. That’s the aspect of Apple’s laptops that has been missing for a while. They’re marvels of design, and they’re quite dignified, but “fun” doesn’t come to mind. Not like when you look at an iBook. Those were fun. The six colors spirit I haven’t forgotten about the iMac and its playful color palette, but it’s a desktop computer. I’m not toting an iMac around with me (that’s not my thing), I’m carrying a Space Black MacBook Pro. And as I sit in my local coffee shop writing this article, I count 13 laptops in use, all of them gray, silver, or black. As iconic as the MacBook Pro is, most laptops have copied its style. There seems to be an opportunity here to stand out, to think different. The deepest Apple has dipped into the fun side of the pool is with the MacBook Air’s Starlight and Sky Blue options. I tested the Sky Blue MacBook Air, and it looks nice, but it and Starlight are subtle takes at fun, more variations of gold and silver than actual colors. They’re not bold like Cosmic Orange or the iBook’s lime green and tangerine. Many theorize that the logo Apple used to promote its March 4 media event is a hint at the colors of the new laptop. I certainly hope that’s the case. The recent Apple logo used to promote next week’s release reminded me of the old days.Apple Speaking of that logo, it reminds me of the original Apple logo, often referred to as the “six colors” logo. Longtime Apple customers think that logo is indicative of a different era for Apple, a time when the company had a more down-to-earth, unique, and playful aura. Now Apple is one of the most powerful and richest companies in the world–it’s a monolith, and so the logo it uses on its products is reflective of that. A lot of users long for those good ol’ days, but the truth of the matter is that that kind of thinking is as dated as the six colors logo. Apple can still do fun, it just needs a modern interpretation. We don’t need a carry handle (which was kinda dumb on the iBook, anyway), nor do we need a clamshell design. Playful colors are the way to go. Superficial choice You might be thinking, “Colors? Really, Roman? You forced me to read your superficial reasoning to buy this underpowered laptop?” Well, here’s another, more practical reason why I want this laptop. There are times when I need to bring my laptop with me, but I would rather it not be an expensive MacBook Pro. For instance, when I travel, I bring a 15-year-old MacBook Pro (with a built-in disc burner), and I use it during down times to manage all the trip photos and videos I take. If it breaks, gets stolen, or gets lost, it’s not as devastating a loss as if it were the MacBook Pro. I’ll be happy to replace that old MacBook with Apple’s new budget laptop. It’ll be more powerful than that laptop’s Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge CPU. And saying the budget laptop will be underpowered is a bit much. If Apple uses an A18 Pro or an A19, we’re talking about M1-like performance, which is good for general productivity and internet access, as well as the basic media management I like to do on vacation. This budget laptop is going to be able to do a lot. Practical and fun? Count me in.

Apple’s March event: 6 burning questions
Macworld In recent years, Apple has increasingly reserved its media events for major announcements, such as flagship iPhone launches. Iterative product updates with chip bumps now often get the “silent press release” treatment, as the advancements are too insignificant to warrant hour-long keynotes. On March 4, Apple is hosting what it’s calling an “experience” for select members of the media. It’s neither a full-scale keynote nor a mere press release drop. During that week, the company is expected to unveil at least five new products, including a cheaper MacBook, the iPhone 17e, boosted iPads and Macs, and maybe more. While the rumors have given us a solid idea of what to expect from each device, a few key questions remain unanswered. 1. Will the iPhone 17e still have a notch? A year ago, Apple introduced the iPhone 16e, retiring its SE smartphone branding. The rebrand came with some pretty exciting changes, including a superior camera, display, and overall design—plus a not-so-exciting price hike. In a few days, Apple will reportedly launch the iPhone 17e, featuring the A19 and MagSafe compatibility. But what about the notch? Some rumors have suggested that the iPhone 16e’s successor will drop the notch in favor of the more futuristic Dynamic Island. Other relevant leakers have contradicted this claim, stating that the notch is here to stay. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell for sure which route Apple will take. Apple On one hand, the iPhone SE notoriously maintained its prehistoric look for many years, so redesigning the second-gen “e” iPhone sounds unlikely. On the other hand, the “e” iPhone, despite costing more, offers fewer features than certain budget smartphones, so Apple may want to make it more enticing by adopting the Dynamic Island. Both options sound plausible. 2. Will Apple tease any unreleased AI features? During WWDC24, Apple previewed Siri 2.0, featuring on-screen content awareness and personal context understanding. The company failed to meet its original deadline, and, eons later, the tools are still nowhere to be found. While we recently expected them to debut with iOS 26.4, the upgraded Apple Intelligence features may have been delayed, yet again, till a future OS release. Apple Certain reports now suggest that Apple will launch the new AI features as part of iOS 26.5. If true, it would be safe to assume that the engineers currently have working test software. In this case, will Apple tease these AI features during the March 4 experience to reassure its users and shareholders, or has it learned from its previous mistake not to make promises about unfinished technology? We’ll find out soon. 3. How cheap will the new MacBook be? The low-cost MacBook will likely be the March 4 experience’s headlining release. According to credible leakers, Apple plans to compete with Chromebooks and other budget-friendly laptops by offering a comparable MacBook model. The notebook will possibly feature the iPhone 16 Pro’s A18 Pro processor in a vibrant 12.9-inch chassis. This would make it ideal for customers who don’t have the budget for a $999 MacBook Air or need the power of an M-series chip. But how “cheap” will it actually be? While some reports suggest that the new MacBook will start at $599, others indicate that it could fall in the $699-799 range. For reference, the Google Store sells Acer Chromebooks that cost as little as $179, with mid-range models costing around $300-600, and higher-end editions going for no more than $800. Taking this into consideration, it would make more sense for Apple to target the mid-range Chromebooks with a $599 price tag. This would lure students and young adults, potentially winning them as lifelong customers through the ecosystem lock-in. But Apple pricing doesn’t always make sense—ahem, iPhone 16e—so a higher price of $799 wouldn’t exactly surprise us. 4. What M5 chip variants will we get? Beyond the affordable MacBook, Apple could announce new M5 MacBook Pro and Mac Studio models within the next week. The MacBook Pro will likely get M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations, following last year’s vanilla M5 debut. Will customers get to configure the CPU and GPU? Certain reports, along with the online Apple Store’s updated Mac purchasing flow, suggest that users will finally get to pick the number of CPU and GPU cores separately. Meanwhile, Apple has a long history of limiting the variety of SKUs and maintaining a simple product approach. As such, we can’t really tell. In the Mac Studio department, it remains unclear if Apple will release an M5 Ultra edition. The current Mac Studio comes in M4 Max and M3 Ultra variants, and Apple has stated that not every M-series chip will get an Ultra tier. So, Apple could offer the M5 Max as an option, along with either the unreleased M4 Ultra or all-new M5 Ultra. We’ll have to wait and see. Apple 5. Will Apple raise prices? The surge in demand for AI slop generation has led to a RAM shortage and subsequent price increases. Does this mean Apple will also start charging more for its products? Well, it’s hard to predict. CEO Tim Cook recently stated that the RAM crisis won’t significantly hurt Apple in the second quarter of the year, but he didn’t rule out a price hike, either. 6. What’s the second Studio Display tier all about? Apple first launched the Studio Display four years ago, and a refresh is overdue. While we’ve long expected the company to release a Studio Display 2 in the near future, macOS code reveals that there will actually be two new Studio Displays, not one. At least one of them is rumored to adopt support for HDR content and a 120Hz refresh rate. Will the second model miss out on these premium perks and cost way less, or will it differ in size to cater to more customers? We’ll get some answers soon. Apple

Apple’s low-cost MacBook may skip some features you won’t miss
Macworld Apple will make a special announcement next week, and rumors strongly suggest that we will see a new low-end MacBook that will sit below the MacBook Air. While it’s already taken for granted that this new MacBook will have the A18 Pro iPhone chip inside, there are questions about what else Apple will cut to make this laptop more affordable. Thanks to inside information from Apple, we may now have a clue as to what customers will be missing out on if they choose the new low-end MacBook. A closer look at what’s missing Based on internal files accidentally leaked by Apple last year, which were seen by Macworld, there are some key features that may be left out of the new MacBook. These files came from an internal macOS kernel and include drivers and hardware specifications for unreleased devices. For instance, the hardware spec sheet for the new low-end MacBook suggests it won’t support high-impedance headphones, as it uses the same audio DAC as the M1 MacBook Air. The low-cost MacBook appears to be using some internal parts last seen in the M1 MacBook Air.Foundry High-impedance headphones offer better sound quality and less distortion, which is ideal for audiophiles and professionals. Apple introduced support for this technology on Macs with the M2 chip and later, but apparently, the company decided to use a cheaper audio DAC for its cheaper MacBook. It also seems that this new MacBook will have a less premium display. The files make no mention of the driver required by the True Tone sensor, which adjusts the display temperature based on ambient light. Instead, this Mac relies on the old sensor that only adjusts the display brightness level based on ambient light. It was first introduced on the iPad in 2016 and has appeared on nearly every Apple display since. Another thing missing from the files for the new, cheaper MacBook is the “AppleHighVoltageCharger” driver, which essentially enables support for more powerful chargers for faster charging. This means that the low-end MacBook will likely take longer to recharge than the newer MacBooks. Fast charging support on Apple laptops also came with the M2 MacBooks, so that’s another similarity that the low-end MacBook will have with the M1 MacBook Air. When it comes to wireless connectivity, the new MacBook is expected to have the same Wi-Fi chip as the A16 iPad, which supports Wi-Fi 6, while the current M4 MacBook Air supports the faster Wi-Fi 6E standard. Customers can also expect standard USB-C rather than Thunderbolt. One last thing: the new MacBook might lack a backlit keyboard, one of the key features of all MacBooks for many years. While this may disappoint some users, it’s worth remembering that the old plastic MacBook didn’t have a backlit keyboard either, nor does the non-Pro Magic Keyboard for iPad. Report: Rise of AI Is Corroding Apple's Influence Over TSMC
A detailed new report from SemiAnalysis argues that while Apple's partnership with TSMC created the modern leading-edge foundry model, the rapid rise of AI computing is changing who pays for new chip technologies and how much influence Apple holds over each new manufacturing node. The report traces how Apple became the single most important customer in the global semiconductor industry by committing early and at scale to new manufacturing processes at TSMC, beginning with the A8 chip in 2014. It argues that Apple's willingness to absorb early costs, fund yield improvements, and align its annual product cycle with TSMC's roadmap allowed the foundry to outpace rivals and cement its dominance at the leading edge. Apple's annual spending at TSMC grew from roughly $2 billion in 2014 to about $24 billion in 2025, while Apple's share of TSMC revenue rose from single digits to as much as 25% at its peak. For much of the past decade, Apple accounted for more than half of initial production at each new node, and in some cases nearly all of it, effectively underwriting the financing of advanced manufacturing when no other customer could do so at scale. However, the rise of AI accelerators has created a second class of customers, such as NVIDIA, who are capable of consuming large amounts of advanced manufacturing capacity. TSMC's revenue mix has shifted significantly as a result. Smartphones once represented nearly half of TSMC's revenue, but that share has fallen as high-performance computing demands, including AI, have grown to become the largest segment. This means Apple is no longer the only customer capable of funding new capacity, even though it remains the largest single customer by revenue. This change is said to already be visible with upcoming manufacturing nodes. Apple's share of early production for TSMC's N2 and A16 nodes is expected to be lower than previous generations, the latter of which is designed for high-performance computing workloads rather than mobile devices. Under SemiAnalysis's modeling, Apple's position strengthens again at later nodes such as A14, which are being designed from the start to support both mobile and high-performance products. In that scenario, Apple's share of early capacity rises again as its iPhone and Mac chips return to being the primary drivers of volume. While Apple continues to rely on TSMC for its most advanced chips, SemiAnalysis says the company is exploring alternatives for lower-risk components and certain categories to diversify its supply chain. So far, the upcoming software update includes a couple of new features for iPhones. iOS 15.3 through iOS 18.3 were all released in late January over the years, so thereby it is likely that iOS 26.3 will be released towards the end of this month as well. The update is compatible with the iPhone 11 series and newer. Below, we recap what is new in the iOS 26.3 beta so far. iPhone to Android Transfer Tool iOS 26.3 makes it easier for iPhone users to switch to an Android device. A new tool allows you to place your iPhone next to an Android device to wirelessly transfer photos, messages, notes, apps, and more. You can also transfer your phone number. In the iOS 26.3 beta, the new tool can be found in the Settings app, under General → Transfer or Reset ‌iPhone‌ → Transfer to Android. It is available worldwide. Notification Forwarding in EU In the EU, iOS 26.3 introduces both a Notification Forwarding feature and AirPods-like proximity pairing for third-party accessories like earbuds and smartwatches. Apple was required to make these changes to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act. More Starting with iOS 26.3, there is a dedicated section for Weather wallpapers, with three preset options available to choose from. To access them, tap and hold on the Lock Screen and tap on the plus sign in the bottom-right corner of the screen. February is Black History Month, and iOS 26.3 will likely include the 2026 version of Apple's annual Black Unity wallpaper. Apple also typically releases a new Black Unity Sport Loop for the Apple Watch, and a matching Unity Rhythm watch face. iOS 26.1 introduced a Background Security Improvement feature that is designed to provide security updates for Safari, WebKit, and some other system items between iOS software updates. However, Counterpoint's outlook for 2026 is more conservative. "The global smartphone market is set to soften in 2026 amid DRAM/NAND shortages and rising component costs, as chipmakers prioritize AI data centers over smartphones," said Counterpoint research director Tarun Pathak. Beyond routine measures like notifying the government of major updates and storing security audit logs, the standards would force manufacturers to hand over source code to government-designated labs to check for vulnerabilities. The standards were originally drafted in 2023 but are only now under government consideration. Tech company executives are expected to meet Tuesday to discuss the matter. IT secretary S. Krishnan told Reuters the government will address legitimate concerns "with an open mind," adding it was "premature to " into the proposals. The country's IT ministry also said it "refutes the statement" that it is considering seeking source code from smartphone makers, despite the requirement appearing in the government documents reviewed by Reuters. Usage data published by StatCounter for January 2026 indicates that only around 15 to 16% of active iPhones worldwide are running any version of ‌iOS 26‌. Today marks the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the MacBook Pro, unveiled by Steve Jobs as a "One More Thing" segment at the end of his Macworld San Francisco keynote on January 10, 2006. The MacBook Pro was an evolution of the previous PowerBook as the professional-level laptop in Apple's lineup, but with the shift from PowerPC chips to Intel Core chips, Apple decided to launch a rebrand. The ‌MacBook Pro‌ was initially available only in a 15-inch size, with a 17-inch model following a few months later. A 13-inch aluminum MacBook debuted in October 2008, and after just one generation it was folded into the ‌MacBook Pro‌ lineup in 2009. The original ‌‌MacBook Pro‌‌ came in two configurations, both with 15.4-inch widescreen displays at a resolution of 1,440 × 900 pixels. As announced, the entry-level model priced at $1,999 featured a 1.67GHz Core Duo processor, 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 RAM, and an 80GB hard drive, while the higher-end model priced at $2,499 offered a faster 1.83GHz Core Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 100GB hard drive. By the time the ‌MacBook Pro‌ started shipping a month later, however, Apple had already upgraded the available Core Duo chips to 1.83GHz in the base model and 2.0GHz in the high-end configuration, while also introducing an even higher-end 2.16GHz build-to-order option. The move freed Apple up from having to follow the cadence of Intel chip releases, and it allowed Apple to further tighten the integration between hardware and software, leading to significant leaps in performance and efficiency. Looking toward the future, the next big revolution for the ‌MacBook Pro‌ appears to be coming fairly soon, with rumors indicating we should see a major redesign for the higher-end models with OLED displays, touchscreen support, and perhaps an iPhone-like Dynamic Island cutout in the display in either late 2026 or early 2027. Back in late 2022 and early 2023, Apple rolled out a new architecture for its Apple Home platform to deliver improved performance and compatibility, although the rollout came with some hiccups that forced Apple to pull and later re-release the upgrade. Three years later, Apple is now on the verge of ending support for the old version of the Home architecture, which may result in access to the entire Home platform being blocked for some users if they do not or cannot update. The deadline for updating was originally announced as fall 2025, but in early November, Apple announced that it was pushing back the deadline to February 10, 2026. It appears Apple will be sticking with that deadline, as the company is sending out fresh reminder emails today to users who have yet to upgrade to the new version of Apple Home.This email serves as your second reminder that support for the earlier version of Apple Home will end next month on February 10, 2026. If you do not update to this new version of Apple Home, your access to your home within the Home app might be blocked, accessories and automations might not work as expected, and you will not receive important security fixes and performance improvements. Updating to the new version of Apple Home can also enable new features, such as guest access, support for robot vacuum cleaners, Activity History, and more.Users can update to the new version of Apple Home within the Software Update section of Home Settings in the Home app. If you have already completed these steps, or "This home and all accessories are up to date" is shown in Software Update, then you are already on the current version and there is nothing more you need to do. X has come under fire over the past week amid reports of Grok's AI image generation capabilities being used to create images depicting women and children in bikinis or underwear. In response, X appears to have scaled back the ability for Grok to generate images in response to X posts by non-paying users, but The Verge notes that the tools remain available to paying subscribers and through the dedicated Grok tab in the X and in the standalone Grok app. The senators argue that the "harmful and likely illegal depictions" are in violation of Apple's and Google's app store terms and that the two companies must remove the apps until the policy violations are addressed.. . . Apple's terms of service bar apps from including "offensive" or "just plain creepy" content, which under any definition must include nonconsensually-generated sexualized images of children and women. Further, Apple's terms explicitly bar apps from including content that is "[o]vertly sexual or pornographic material" including material "intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings." Turning a blind eye to X's egregious behavior would make a mockery of your moderation practices. Apple this week secured another victory in its ongoing legal dispute with heart monitoring company AliveCor, after a federal appeals court upheld a 2024 ruling that found Apple's changes to the Apple Watch were lawful product improvements rather than anticompetitive behavior. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court decision that rejected AliveCor's antitrust claims. AliveCor had argued that Apple illegally monopolized the market for heart rate analysis apps on watchOS when it replaced its Heart Rate during Physical Observation (HRPO) algorithm with its heart rate neural network (HRNN) algorithm in watchOS 5. AliveCor claimed that Apple changed the algorithm so that its ECG KardiaBand could no longer identify irregular heart rhythms – as part of an alleged effort to "eliminate opposition" in the heart rate analysis space – and requested that it reinstate the old algorithm. Apple argued that AliveCor did not have the right to dictate Apple's design decisions, and that the request to support the older heart rate technology would require the court to be a day-to-day enforcer of how Apple engineers its products. The court ultimately agreed with Apple. The Ninth Circuit has now affirmed Apple's victory. "The undisputed evidence shows as a matter of law that Apple's refusal to share HRPO data was not anticompetitive," the court wrote. It added that even if some form of heart rate data access were essential for competing in the market, AliveCor's claim would still fail because Apple provides app developers with access to the same Tachogram API data that Apple's Irregular Rhythm Notification feature uses. The appeals court also rejected AliveCor's argument that Apple had a duty to share its proprietary data with competitors. The ruling said that antitrust laws generally impose no obligation for companies to deal with their rivals. It also noted that such a requirement "would implicate the same concerns regarding incentives to innovate and judicial competency that the Supreme Court has articulated." The decision is Apple's second major win against AliveCor within the last year. In March, the Federal Circuit confirmed the invalidation of three AliveCor patents related to heart rate monitoring, vacating an International Trade Commission ruling that could have led to an Apple Watch import ban. 2026 could be a bumper year for Apple's Mac lineup, with the company expected to announce as many as four separate MacBook launches. Rumors suggest Apple will court both ends of the consumer spectrum, with more affordable options for students and feature-rich premium lines for users that seek the highest specifications from a laptop. Below is a breakdown of what we're expecting over the next 12 months from Apple's multi-pronged MacBook offering. Got your eye on a particular model? Low-Cost MacBook Apple is preparing to enter the low-cost laptop market for the first time by developing a budget MacBook aimed at luring away customers from Chromebooks and entry-level Windows PCs, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The new device is said to be designed for students, businesses, and casual users, and will target people who mainly browse the web, work on documents, or dabble in light media editing. The new MacBook is said to have a 13-inch display, similar to but slightly smaller than the MacBook Air, and will feature an ultra-thin, lightweight design with a lower-end LCD display. According to reputable industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is said to be using its A18 Pro chip to power the machine. The A18 Pro chip debuted in the iPhone 16 Pro and is around 40% slower than Apple's latest M4 chip, but its multi-core CPU performance is virtually identical to the M1 chip in the 2020 MacBook Air, and it even outperforms the M1 chip for graphics. The A18 Pro chip lacks Thunderbolt support, so the new MacBook would likely be equipped with regular USB-C ports. The current 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $999 in the U.S., so the new MacBook would likely have a starting price of between $699 and $899. The more-affordable MacBook could also come in some fun new colors like Silver, Blue, Pink, and Yellow. MacBook Pro With M5 Pro and M5 Max Apple is going to refresh the rest of the MacBook Pro lineup with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips in early 2026, having already updated its base 14-inch MacBook Pro with a standard M5 chip in October. The M5 series is based on TSMC's third-generation 3-nanometer technology. Based on improvements to the base MacBook Pro with M5 chip, faster SSD performance and higher memory bandwith are also likely for the high-end models. No other major changes are expected, with Apple holding over a completely refreshed design until the M6 models. If Apple retains current pricing levels, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro chip will start at $1,999, while the 16-inch model with M5 Pro chip will start at $2,399. For the M5 Max equivalents, prices could start at $3,199 for the 14-inch model, and $3,499 for the 16-inch machine. M5 MacBook Air While the M4 MacBook Air model isn't exactly old, attention is already turning to its successor. The M5 series is reportedly being manufactured using TSMC's advanced 3-nanometer process technology, and we have some idea of what to expect in terms of performance, thanks to the recently released M5 iPad Pro: benchmarks show single-core scores around 4,133 and multi-core scores around 15,437. That's roughly a 12-15% jump over the M4 iPad Pro in both categories. As for graphics performance, the M5 chip appears to have up to a 36% faster GPU compared to the M4 chip. The benchmark suggests Apple has focused on modest clock speed increases and core-level efficiency improvements for the M5 chip, rather than an architecture overhaul. In other words, the M5 will be similar to the step-wise performance upgrade from M3 to M4. Expect 10-15% faster CPU speeds, a slightly more powerful GPU, and better efficiency, potentially leading to even longer battery life. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to roll out M5 versions of the MacBook Air in the first quarter of this year. Based on previous spring refreshes, this suggests a likely March 2026 window. As for pricing, we expect it to remain stable, with the base model sticking with the current entry-level $999 price. MacBook Pro With Touchscreen OLED Display Apple is reportedly developing a completely new version of the MacBook Pro packed with next-generation hardware features. The redesigned models are expected to boast M6 chips, which could adopt a completely new packaging based on TSMC's 2nm process that allows components such as the CPU, GPUs, DRAM, and Neural Engine to be more tightly integrated. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple is readying OLED technology for these models. Compared to current MacBook Pro models that use mini-LED screens, the benefits of OLED technology would include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more. In addition, Gurman reports that the new machines will also have "thinner and lighter frames." Apple is apparently focusing on delivering the thinnest possible device without compromising on battery life or major new features. The redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are also expected to have a hole-punch camera at the top of the display, rather than the notch we've become accustomed to. Gurman says that the design "leaves a display area around the sensor... similar in concept to the Dynamic Island on the iPhone." Apple's first OLED MacBook Pro will also feature a touchscreen display, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The claim has since been corroborated by Gurman, noting that the touchscreen MacBook Pro will retain a full trackpad and keyboard. Research firm Omdia says Apple is "highly likely" to introduce new MacBook Pros featuring OLED displays this year, while Gurman has said the new OLED machines are being readied for late 2026 or early 2027. It would be unusual for Apple to introduce two ‌MacBook Pro‌ refreshes in the same year, but there is precedent for it: Apple updated the MacBook Pro lineup twice in 2023, first with M2 Pro/M2 Max chips in January and then with M3/M3 Pro/M3 Max chips in late October. Due to the pricier components, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are expected to cost a few hundred dollars more than current versions. Spam and cold calls have become such a nuisance that many people simply don't answer their phone unless they recognize the number. In iOS 26, though, you can learn about who's calling before you respond, thanks to a clever feature that intercepts unknown calls and asks the caller to identify themselves before your iPhone even rings. The "Ask Reason for Calling" feature is kind of like having your own receptionist. When someone who isn't in your Contacts calls, your iPhone automatically answers the call with a polite automated message asking for their name and reason for calling. The caller is placed on hold while their response is transcribed to text and displayed on your screen, letting you decide whether to accept, decline, or ask for more information. It's a decent upgrade from the existing "Silence Unknown Callers" option, which simply sends all unrecognized numbers straight to voicemail. With the new approach, legitimate callers – like your doctor or a delivery service – can identify themselves, whereas robocallers and spammers are likely to hang up when greeted by the automated response. How to Enable Ask Reason for Calling The following steps show you how to turn on the feature: Open Settings on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap Apps. Select Phone. Under the "Screen Unknown Callers" section, tap Ask Reason for Calling. That's all there is to it. Your iPhone will now intercept calls from numbers not saved in your Contacts and request information before alerting you. Other Unknown Caller Screening Options If you don't want to use the new Ask Reason for Calling feature, iOS 26 offers two alternative approaches for handling unknown numbers: Silence: This option automatically sends all calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail. The calls still appear in your Recents list, and you'll receive the voicemail if the caller leaves one. It's the same behavior as the "Silence Unknown Callers" toggle in iOS 18. Never: With this setting, calls from unknown numbers ring normally, just like calls from saved contacts. Missed calls appear in your Recents list as usual. It's your typical iPhone calling experience. To switch between these options, go to Settings ➝ Apps ➝ Phone, and select your preferred option under "Screen Unknown Callers." The Ask Reason for Calling feature works best when you maintain an up-to-date Contacts list.
