RealNetworks has confirmed to MacMinute that the security vulnerabilities reported earlier today only affect previous beta versions of RealPlayer 10 and not the final version currently available for download.

eEye has uncovered new security holes affecting RealNetworks’ media players, including the Mac version. “The flaws could be exploited via a malicious Web page or a RealMedia file run from a local drive to take over a user’s system or delete files,” reports TechWorld. “The most serious of the three new bugs involves malformed calls, and could be exploited via a player embedded in a malicious site to execute arbitrary code.

RealNetworks has said that in the fall it will offer substantial discounts to some university students, with deals already cut with California at Berkely and the University of Minnesota, reports Associated Press. The pricing will be between US$2 to $3 (regularly $9.95 per month) for the standard Rhapsody service.

In a move aimed squarely at luring iTunes customers, RealNetworks today announced that it has slashed song pricing to 49 cents and album pricing to $4.99 for a limited time. The price cuts are part of the company’s new “Freedom of Choice” marketing campaign to tout its Harmony technology, which allows songs purchases from the RealNetworks Music Store to be played on Apple’s iPod.

RealNetworks plans to release new software this week that allows songs purchased through its online music store to be played on Apple’s iPod — the first time a company other than Apple has sold songs with DRM (digital rights management) that will work with the popular device. The new technology, called Harmony, was created without Apple’s authorization.

RealNetworks CEO Rob Glasser told a German newspaper (Financial Times Deutschland) that the company plans to launch its European online music service within six month to a year from now, reports Reuters. One of the things that will make this possible is the recent crackdown by European authorities on illegal music file sharing, says Glasser.

Reuters reports that RealNetworks has launched a new service that provides news, music, sports and movie trailers to mobile phones and handheld computers. RealNetworks says that devices such as the Nokia 3650 mobile phone and the Palm Tungsten and Zire 71 PDAs are being shipped with software for the new service.

RealNetworks today shipped the final version of RealOne Player for Mac OS X.
