Boom turns your Mac’s volume up to 11 (maybe 12)

If you’ve ever found yourself dealing with low audio output on a Mac (more common on laptops with their small speakers than desktops such as the iMac), Global Delight’s Boom will boost the audio volume. Significantly, as in up to 400%.

Once installed, a Boom icon appears in the Mac OS X menu bar. You can use it to adjust the volume via a slider and tweak Boom’s settings (more on that in a moment).

“iLife ’11 Portable Genius” (http://macte.ch/c9ADj) by Guy Hart-Davis is a breezy read, filled with good info, tips and tricks and slick, appropriate graphics pertaining to one of Apple’s crown jewels, the iLife suite. In fact, the “Portable Genius” line of books has become a serious contender to the “Missing Manual” series.

By Daniel East

Topaz Labs’ (http://www.topazlabs.com) reputation for easy-to-use and effective plug-ins for Photoshop makes them a favorite developer for a lot of photographers and designers — myself included — but while their latest addition, InFocus (US$69.99), is great in theory, it requires more experience and finesse to produce the results in the same ways as its siblings.

Kool Tools: Logitech Keyboard Case by ZAGG

For many people, the iPad can’t replace a full-fledged laptop. However, the ability to use an external keyboard makes it more laptop-like — and a more-than-suitable netbook replacement. One fine solution for using a keyboard is the Logitech Keyboard Case by Zagg (http://www.zagg.com/accessories/zaggmate-ipad-case).

Apple offers the iPad Keyboard Dock and the Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard as physical keyboard options, but the Logitech solution is more portable. There are other iPad keyboard solutions, but the ZAGG product is unique in that it’s a hard shell case and keyboard in one.
