Your Mac and iPad just got a secret Wi-Fi boost–here’s how to start using it
Macworld Those who own a Mac or iPad and would like to improve their device’s Wi-Fi speed are in luck. Apple has released free software updates for numerous models in both product lines that offer exactly this. iPadOS 26.2 and macOS Tahoe 26.2 were rolled out midway through December, but this feature wasn’t noticed at the time. Only now has it been spotted that they contain an improvement to Wi-Fi performance. As spotted by MacRumors and confirmed by updated tech specs in an Apple support document, iPads and Macs equipped with Wi-Fi 6E are now capable of a maximum channel bandwidth of 160MHz when connected to 5GHz Wi-Fi. That’s double the previous limit of 80MHz, and matches what was already offered on 6GHz networks (which are far less common, and require newer router hardware). In other words, you can now get the smooth streaming, speedy file transfers, and other benefits of 6GHz’s higher bandwidth limit, without the difficulties of actually connecting to 6GHz. Fortunately, plenty of iPads and Macs support Wi-Fi 6E. The iPad Pro M2 and later, the iPad Air M2 and later, and the iPad mini A17 Pro all do so. As do the MacBook Pro M2 (Pro/Max) and later, the MacBook Air M3 and later, the iMac M3 and later, the Mac mini M2 and later, and the Mac Studio M2 (Max/Ultra) and later. Owners of a standard iPad miss out, as do Mac Pro users, though anyone using one probably has it hooked up to an Ethernet cable anyway. iPhone 16 and 17 models already support this higher bandwidth, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro. Not to mention that the software updates contain other new features and tweaks that are worth having. macOS Tahoe 26.2, for example, adds a new ‘Edge Light’ for improved video calls and brings new AI features to the Mac Studio. iPadOS 26.2, meanwhile, is packed with critical security updates, including a pair of zero-day WebKit flaws. To update iPadOS on your iPad, open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update. The system will tell you if any new updates are available; if there are, simply follow the instructions to install them. On Mac, open System Settings and go to General > Software Update.

This Google Chrome feature is why I’m never going back to Safari
Macworld The browser is one of the most-used apps on the Mac, and for a lot of users like me, it’s a key productivity tool. A majority of what I do for work involves web-based apps and tools, all accessed through my browser. As I write this article, for example, I’m using a browser that’s connected to the content management system for Macworld. I also have a number of windows open to resources, references, and numerous sources for the stories I need to write. I’ve been using Google Chrome for the past couple of years. I switched from Safari because I got tired of the memory management issues that Apple never seems to fix. A month ago, Google introduced a new feature that I absolutely love–I may never go back to Safari on my Mac. Two different websites appear in one tab. That’s the beauty of Google Chrome Split View.Foundry That Chrome feature is called Split View. It lets you see two websites within a single tab. It sounds simple, and it is, but it’s made work so much more manageable. For example, I can have our CMS with an article I’m working on on one side, and a company’s website that I’m using for fact-checking on the other. In the past, I either had separate tabs that I clicked between, or two different browser windows opened and carefully placed side by side. The new Split View means I don’t have to worry about managing those tabs and windows anymore. When using Split View, just move your pointer to the website you want to use, and it’s immediately active. The tab itself is split, so if you decide to close one of the sites, all you have to do is click on the appropriate “x” within the tab. If you press Command+W, the site that you are using will close, and the other will stay open. If you’re using Chrome and want to give it a try, first, you have to have the latest version of Chrome. You can do this in Chrome; go to Chrome > Settings > About Chrome, and you can update the app. After that, there are two ways to use Split View. How to use Split View One tab open. When you have a single tab open, and you want to split it and open a second website. Control-click the tab and select Add Tab to New Split View. The window will be split into two. To open the website you want in the new space, click it and then enter a URL in the box or select a bookmark. Foundry Multiple tabs open while on active tab. If you have multiple tabs open, you can Control-click on the tab of the site you are currently on, select Add Tab to New Split View and in the second pane, a list of the other tabs that are open appears. If you have multiple tabs open and Control-click on an inactive tab, you’ll find an option for New Split View with Current Tab. The earbuds (on their own) won’t unlock the aforementioned Fitness app perks, however. Foundry Journal Taking care of your mental health can be as crucial as staying physically fit. If introspection happens to be one of your 2026 resolutions, your iPhone can help you reflect and write down core thoughts. Beyond the Fitness+ meditation sessions, Apple offers its Journal app on iOS. Apple Journal is a twenty-first-century diary that, with your permission, tracks your everyday digital behavior. It’s aware of the photos you take, streamed songs, recorded workouts, and other activities and interactions. Journal optionally displays the relevant data tiles and prompts you to write about them. This helps you document a certain day and tie key memories to relevant music tracks, photos, or locations—it’s therapeutic. Reading Goals New Year’s resolutions often include reading more books or learning a new skill. As you may have guessed, your iPhone can also assist with that. Apple Books is a built-in e-book reader, featuring a comprehensive library of free and paid titles. Whether you want to learn how to code, read about WWII, or just immerse yourself in a hopeless romantic’s virtual reality, it’s all there. Thanks to the integrated Reading Goals feature, you can set daily targets and record the time you spend reading. If you’ve got bookworm friends, you could also generate digital cards to visualize your progress and share them via iMessage or third-party apps. It’s worth noting that Apple Books supports audiobooks, too. So, if you’re more of a listener than a reader, you could learn something new by playing supported books or opting for podcasts in the dedicated Apple Podcasts app. Foundry Focus While Screen Time is highly effective for increasing your productivity, notifications can still disrupt your chain of thought. Fortunately, iOS offers an extensive do-not-disturb system, known as Focus, which can selectively mute calls and app alerts. For instance, you can create a Focus mode dedicated to work and set it to automatically activate on weekdays from 9 to 5. You could allow-list apps like Slack, Teams, and Meet while muting the rest. That’s not to mention the ability to tie different Home Screen layouts to specific Focus modes, which would conceal distracting app icons and widgets during work hours. The possibilities are endless. Foundry Reminders The Reminders app is often used for keeping track of appointments and making grocery lists. Its utility, however, can extend beyond that by actively reminding you about the habits you’re newly building. What you can expect in an AirTag case Because the AirTag comes in a single variety, you don’t need to choose which kind to acquire. Apple sells them singly ($29) and in a four-pack ($99). Engraving is free. An AirTag regularly broadcasts 2.4GHz Bluetooth signals with an encrypted device ID for other Apple devices to pick up and relay along with those devices’ locations. The 2.4GHz band penetrates solid objects well, but case designers need to be mindful of materials that have the potential to block the signal. In our survey of AirTag cases, we didn’t find a case so far that had that design problem. AirTags also use ultrawideband (USB) technology for Precision Finding, exclusive to Apple’s own Find My items. Precision Finding lets an iPhone with UWB identify the direction and distance within inches when it’s within about 15 to 30 feet (4.5 to 9 m). Consider to what use you may put an AirTag to determine the features you want: Purpose: Cases exist in enough variety that you can find one designed as a luggage tag, another as a stylish keyring, and another to resist enormous amounts of damage. Figure out where you want to put the AirTag and match the case to it. Water resistance: Many cases feature some degree of water resistance, some using the IP rating that defines precisely how much. If you’re using an AirTag outside or on a pet’s collar, you may want one with a high degree of resistance. When attaching to a bag or keyring, it may seem less important or not important at all. Ring, clip, loop, or carabiner: Case makers offer many variants on attachments. Some include a simple hole to attach a keychain, while others incorporate a keychain as part of the product and may include a keyring. You can purchase multiple cases built into a carabiner, including one with a three-digit combination lock. You can also get a string or similar loop design, in which the case passes through a loop and pulls tight on a handle without a knot. Removable or adhesive: You might want an AirTag case that’s easy to move about or attach and reattach. Other cases include adhesive for semi-permanent fixed attachment. Hidden for theft recovery: Some cases are designed to hide an AirTag, making its presence less apparent and thus less likely to be discovered if stolen; others are obvious, such as in a keychain or luggage tag. Temper hideability with the knowledge that Apple’s anti-stalking features built into AirTag tech makes them discoverable to criminals with a smartphone.Shows the front: Conversely, some cases show off an AirTag, revealing its front where you might have had added custom engraving from Apple with an emoji or text. You might want to see that engraving to differentiate among AirTags you own. Cost: Cases generally cost from about $20 to $35—around the price of a single AirTag. However, there are outliers below $10 and above $40. It’s all about the function, ruggedness, and complexity of purpose. Some charge extra for style. How we test AirTag case features For each kind of case, we rated them based on specific features around which they were designed. These include: Easy to insert the AirTag for secure retention: Every case has a slightly different approach to getting an AirTag inside. Some cases have an elaborate locking procedure or require removing and restoring four tiny screws to preserve a waterproof seal. Others are simple as sliding the tag into a holding or popping it into a rubber ring. Attaches securely for attachable cases: We tested cases that market themselves as attachable at how well they succeed at that task. Cases may come with or be part of a keyring, carabiner, wrist strip, or pet collar, or may have an adhesive to stick on to objects, like the inside of luggage. Access for battery replacement: Apple expects an AirTag battery to last for about a year in everyday usage, which it defines as one case of Precision Finding and four tones played per day. A case should allow access that isn’t maddening for replacing the battery every several months to a year. Robust against bumps and bangs: Only a few kinds of cases can avoid the wear and tear of bumping against other objects. Most need to be constructed with that in mind. For cases exposed to other surfaces, we look at whether the materials and build quality give confidence in them provide lasting value. Blocks access to remove: A handful of cases provide a security element intended to prevent access to an AirTag without excessive force—the AirTag would have to be destroyed to remove it. We rate these cases on whether they seem able to prevent or deter everything but destruction.
