Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch and Buds are even cheaper Apple copies than we thought
Macworld At its last Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Galaxy Watch Ultra, which don’t just sound like Apple products—they look suspiciously like them too. But now that the first deliveries of the devices have started arriving in customers’ hands, it’s pretty clear that the Apple imitation is skin-deep. A picture posted by Redditor Ibuddhaa shows their new Galaxy Watch Ultra with a display that’s misaligned with the faux depth marks on the bezel. It’s only off by a millimeter or two, but it’s enough to make the watch look like a cheap knockoff of a premium smartwatch. Ibuddhaa says every watch face is misaligned, suggesting that the issue stems from the display. Several responses to the original post say the issue isn’t present on their watch. For those devices, Samsung “temporarily suspended deliveries of Galaxy Buds 3 Pro devices to distribution channels to conduct a full quality control evaluation before shipments to consumers take place.” It’s not clear whether the Galaxy Watch Pro issues are a one-off thing or a symptom of something more widespread, but the buds issue certainly raises our eyebrows. And maybe the next time Samsung wants to take some inspiration from Apple, it should consider copying its build quality instead.

In my experience, I was still able to hit around 45-50mbps depending on the time of day with the WireGuard protocol. That marks it slower than some of the speed kings in the industry, putting it behind Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN. While you can select between WireGuard, IKEv2 and OpenVPN, I found the app did a good job of picking the best one for any given situation, and defaulted to letting it pick its own protocols. I never regretted buying an Apple device–until now
Macworld I have almost no regrets when it comes to Apple products. Whenever Apple introduces a new device, I can count on it being a sophisticated product even if it’s not immediately obvious. For example, despite my initial misgivings, I realized how ingenious and well-thought-out the AirPods are after using them daily. That’s why I had high expectations for the HomePod mini–maybe too high. Since I bought the stylish little speaker, I haven’t found it inspiring and now it just sits around uselessly. The problem with the HomePod mini is that Apple made too many compromises and instead of taking initiative, the product simply follows the trend of smart home speakers. While the HomePod mini works as it should, I have a better alternative for every task it can perform. There’s an adage that says, “Better is the enemy of the good.” That’s the case with the HomePod mini: AirPods Pro sound better, Siri on my iPhone is faster, and it’s much easier to manage my life on my Mac. Sounding off The biggest problem I have with the HomePod mini is the sound quality. There’s nothing wrong with it, but OK is just not good enough for a $100 speaker. When I listen to my favorite songs music with it, I always have the impression that the quality is lacking. Of course, I don’t expect an affordable speaker to compete with the large HomePod–but even an ancient JBL Bluetooth speaker beats it in terms of volume and bass. It’s ideal as a standalone device in a smaller room, perhaps the kitchen, playing music and podcasts. But I want to use it as a desktop speaker for the Mac mini and it’s just not strong enough to do the job for me. Using it with my Mac every day doesn’t work as smoothly as I want and there are constant annoyances. The latency when stopping or starting audio is annoying and if I want to use Siri on the iPhone, the HomePod gets in the way and tries to answer the question instead of the iPhone. Configuration via the Home app is also quite cumbersome. (I’m based in Germany, and part of the problem may be some compatibility issues with the Fritz!Box router that I use, but most of the issues seem to be fairly common.) In contrast, connecting my AirPods Pro to my Mac is so much easier. Thanks to Apple’s first-class integration with macOS, all I have to do is plug in the AirPods and they connect to the device I’m using, as if by magic. If I’m sitting in front of the Mac mini, the AirPods connect reliably to the computer. It works so easily and smoothly that I usually use my AirPods Pro instead of the HomePod mini. Oh, Siri Siri on the HomePod Mini is a disappointment–it’s like having an assistant with a split personality and hearing problems. I have no confidence in using Siri on the HomePod to add important appointments to my calendar. Granted, using Siri on the HomePod mini for standard tasks works perfectly. I can easily check the weather or call up a playlist by saying, “Play Taylor Swift.” But in the age of ChatGPT, that’s just not enough for me and I often miss the simple navigation interface of an iPod or the Music app. Siri should be the best reason to buy a HomePod mini—but it’s just not good enough. However, since Apple has to install a more powerful CPU and 8GB of memory in every HomePod, that means the current HomePod mini will be left off the AI bandwagon. Apple is reportedly working on a HomePod with a screen. However, as my colleague David Price points out, this won’t solve most of the issues affecting the HomePod. If you use it as an audio device or as a Mac speaker, you usually don’t even have it in your field of vision–a display adds limited value. Mini not mighty All this being said, you can find customers who are completely satisfied with the HomPod mini. In the kitchen or dining room, it is a great alternative to a cheap speaker from Amazon or Google. But don’t expect too much from the small orb. It reminds me of those cool multifunctional devices that combine numerous tools such as a screwdriver, pliers, knife, and bottle opener. You think they’re brilliant at first, but when you really need them, you just end up getting your fingers caught.

How to automate cloning your drives on a Mac
Macworld What if something goes wrong and you need immediate access on-site to a full backup of your Mac’s startup volume or an external drive, and you need to return to work as soon as possible? The introduction of Apple silicon made it difficult to create a drive you could swap in and start up from, but that shouldn’t stop you from making a backup that will get you back in business. (There are workarounds, but it requires ongoing effort.) The best option to have a nearly hot-swappable copy of your most important locally stored data is a clone. A clone is an exact copy of the current state of a volume–a snapshot, really. Time Machine offers a form of this capability, but it also archives older files. You can configure cloning software just to keep an up-to-date copy of the drive you want to mirror and nothing additional. I’ve relied on Carbon Copy Cloner or CCC ($49.99) for years. It supports cloning and a number of related features, like archiving. An alternate is SuperDuper! ($27.95), which is more tightly focused on volume cloning. With apps, you pick a source (typically a volume) and a destination, set a schedule, and configure fiddly options, like verifying files after copying in CCC. Cloning lets you use a drive that is no bigger than the drive you’re copying from for cloning, unlike Time Machine and archiving modes in other backup software, which need space to store multiple versions of files over time. (Time Machine always archives older files until a backup volume starts to fill, and then it purges the oldest versions of archived files first.) I’ve found that cloning software has an advantage in reliability over Time Machine, which stores data in date-stamped snapshots. If your startup volume dies and your Mac is still working, you can use an external drive, install macOS on it, and use Migration Assistant during setup to import files. However, I’ve had problems on multiple occasions where Migration Assistant won’t recognize what seems to be an up-to-date Time Machine copy of my startup volume. I have turned to a cloned backup of that volume, which works compatibly with Migration Assistant and doesn’t seem to fail in the same circumstances. I’ve been grateful that I had this extra copy. A Macworld reader asked in particular about setting up a quickly accessible external drive in case the drive they kept their Photos library on failed. Could they swap immediately to a clone that’s been kept up to date on the other drive? Yes, and it’s a great purpose for a clone. In that scenario, you could quit Photos (if it hadn’t already told you of a problem and quit), eject the failing drive, launch Photos while holding down Option, and select the Photos Library file on the cloned drive. Depending on how frequently you have the clone operation set, you might lose little or no work. With iCloud Photos enabled, you would also need to set the cloned library as your System Library in  > Photos > Settings > General by clicking Use as System Photo Library. You can also drill down with clones, copying just part of a volume instead of the whole thing. I had a Photos library meltdown in 2021 that took me hours to recover from and then days to get back to normal. Something in my Photos Library package corrupted so badly that even restoring from a Time Machine backup failed. In the end, I had to rebuild from scratch and let Photos sync with iCloud to retrieve all my images and videos. Vowing not to let that happen again, I setup a nightly clone of my locally stored Photos Library package to a high-capacity external hard drive. While the hard drive is slow, the clone update happens overnight, so it doesn’t overlap with my daytime work. Time Machine is the easiest for a Mac owner. Add to that Backblaze or another encrypted, online backup service. Or, if you’re keeping all your documents and images in a syncing service–iCloud Photos/iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive/Google Photos, etc.–you can lean on that as your second backup. This is essentially a case that attaches to the iPad magnetically and then, through some clever folds and slits in the vegan leather, allows the device to be placed in three different positions. They are available for a variety of iPads, including the mini, Air, 11-inch Pro, and the 12.9-inch Pro version reviewed here. Position-wise, there’s the standard wedge shape where one of the long edges is folded so that it props the iPad up at a 20-degree angle, perfect for typing.
