Apple’s new AirTag is here and it’s louder—but still needs a key ring
Macworld Apple on Monday finally introduced its 2nd-gen AirTag, nearly four years after the original version debuted in April 2021. It looks the same, costs the same, and is only slightly upgraded compared to its predecessor. The main internal upgrade is a louder speaker (Apple claims it’s 50 percent louder than the previous generation) and the 2nd-gen U2 Ultra Wideband chip. Apple introduced the U2 chip with the iPhone 15 as a more efficient and accurate way to precisely locate lost items. Apple says the new chip locates lost items “from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation.” It was previously reported that the AirTag 2’s battery would be harder to remove as a privacy measure, but it’s unclear whether that’s the case here. However, Apple does note that the 2nd-gen AirTag has a new internal design. Otherwise, the new AirTag is the same as the old one, down to its need for a separate accessory to attach it to its most logical item, a set of keys. The design appears to be identical, while the integration with the Find My app works as before. Apple says its new AirTag is “designed from the ground up to keep location data private and secure,” though it doesn’t appear to have any new security features. Apple does note, as before, that the AirTag is meant for tracking objects rather than people or pets. Since the AirTag is the same size and shape as the original model, all existing AirTag accessories will work with both models. There are new colors of the FineWoven key ring, including fox orange, midnight purple, navy, moss, and black. You still need an iPhone or iPad to pair it, and Apple notes they must be running iOS 26. Apple just weeks from unveiling Google-powered Siri makeover, report claims
Macworld Earlier this month, Apple and Google issued a joint statement announcing a “multi-year collaboration” to base Siri and other Apple AI products on Google Gemini technology. But more details of the partnership, including the likely timeframe, have now been revealed by a new report. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman claims Apple “appears to be less than a month away from unveiling the results of this partnership.” He isn’t sure if this announcement will take the form of a full press event, acknowledging that the company may choose instead to brief journalists individually, but either way, the information should be out there in a matter of weeks. According to Gurman, the Siri announcement will mostly consist of what we’ve heard before. Apple will tell us that, finally fulfilling a promise made at WWDC 2024 and later repeatedly delayed, Siri will soon be able to use contextual data–other information on the screen, and everything it knows about the user–to more accurately execute spoken commands. But that’s not all. As we previously reported, the Gemini partnership should bring some new features, including the ability to answer questions conversationally and tell stories, to Apple’s AI products as well. There will be a gap between the announcement and updated Siri actually rolling out to the public, but it shouldn’t be anything like the delays we’ve seen so far. Gurman expects the new features to be bundled with iOS 26.4, which is currently slated to hit beta testing in February and launch in March or early April. Beyond April, we can look forward to bigger changes later in the year. Gurman insists that a “fully reimagined” version of Siri, internally codenamed Campos, will be announced at WWDC 2026 and form part of the iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 updates which roll out to the public in the fall. “The new system,” Gurman writes, “is a fresh architecture and interface designed from the ground up for the chatbot era.” It will be more conversational than current Siri or even the Siri in iOS 26.4, and capable of “sustained back-and-forth dialogue.” This too will be based on Gemini technology. But there’s a sting in the tail. While Apple rushed to emphasise that the upcoming Gemini-enhanced version of Siri will run on-device or on Apple’s own servers, implying that this approach was chosen for privacy reasons, Santos may not. According to Gurman’s sources, Apple and Google are currently discussing a plan to have it run on Google’s cloud infrastructure to improve responsiveness. It’s unclear how Apple would square this with its “industry-leading privacy standards,” but it will have plenty of opportunities to make that argument in its various press engagements this year.

Macworld So you just spent at least a grand on a new iPad Pro, and you’re wondering why you should waste $299-$349 more on a mere keyboard case. Well, that’s just it. Apple’s overhauled Magic Keyboard for the M4 and M5 iPad Pro models isn’t a mere keyboard case. The accessory has been rebuilt with higher-end materials and now supports even more features, turning your tablet into an effective laptop replacement. While there are cheaper third-party replicas that manage to get some things right, you’re unlikely to find one that ticks the 5 checkboxes that follow. Keyboard warrior The iPad Pro is renowned for its crisp OLED screen, a feature which is appreciated by artists and movie fans alike. iPad users, however, know all too well that most of the time they don’t get to enjoy that screen in its entirety. Whenever you tap on a text field, the software keyboard pops up, occupying around half of the real estate. This covers a significant portion of the on-screen content, making it hard to maximize one’s productivity. When a Magic Keyboard is attached to your iPad Pro, by contrast, the system automatically stops showing the software keyboard. This lets you take advantage of the full 11- or 13-inch display and get work done in a more practical manner. You also get to rely on keyboard shortcuts in supported first- and third-party apps, which accelerates most workflows. What makes the embedded keyboard so special is its build quality and MacBook-like specs. You get backlit keys, a function row, and the scissor mechanism which elevates the typing experience. I’ve tried other keyboard cases in the past—including Apple’s own—and it’s hard to think of any variant that surpasses the latest-generation Magic Keyboard. It’s now made of glass, and offers haptic feedback. iPadOS 26 also plays a major role in this setup. With this OS, the mouse cursor has been redesigned to become pointier and less of a circle. It’s now easier to precisely tap a smaller UI element and operate it in a desktop computer fashion. By actively using the trackpad to interact with your iPad Pro, you also protect the display’s oleophobic coating, which wears down when touched repeatedly. Extra port-able If you depend on wired accessories, the fact that the iPad Pro has just one Thunderbolt port can feel like a major limitation. Unless you pay for (and carry around) a dongle, you won’t be able to charge your tablet and attach add-ons, such as external storage devices, at the same time. ICEBlock App Developer Sues Trump Officials, Claims Apple Was Pressured to Remove App
The developer behind the ICEBlock app that Apple removed from the App Store at the Trump administration's request is suing for suppression of free speech. The lawsuit names Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem, and other government officials, accusing them of First Amendment violations (via NPR). Key to the lawsuit is a statement from Bondi, who claimed Apple removed the app after the government asked Apple to do so. "We reached out to Apple today demanding they remove the ICEBlock app from their ‌App Store‌ -- and Apple did so," said Bondi. ICEBlock allows iPhone users to report the location of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents when the agents are spotted in public. The app was removed from the ‌App Store‌ in early October, though people who downloaded it before it was pulled are still able to use it. ICEBlock had over a million users when it was removed from the ‌App Store‌. Australia's new social media law goes into effect on December 10, 2025, and ahead of that date, Apple is sharing information on developer tools that are designed to help social media apps adhere to the law. Children under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to use Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube (except for YouTube Kids), Snapchat, X, Twitch, Threads, and Kick in Australia, and those apps have to take "reasonable steps" to remove underage users from their platforms starting Wednesday. Apps will also need to prevent new signups from users under the age of 16, and there is a one-year transition period before penalties will begin. To assist developers, Apple provides the Declared Age Range API, which gives developers access to the age range of users. Other tools available include an option for an age suitability URL that provides more information on the app and its age-related content, app description pages that indicate age restrictions, and tools for setting higher minimum age ranges. Platforms that don't deactivate accounts created by children will face serious fines. Australia may also add more apps to its banned list over time, depending on the apps that kids adopt after not being able to access their current favorites. Australia is the first country to implement a total social media ban for children. According to "Smart Pikachu," a Weibo account that has previously shared accurate supply-chain details on Chinese Android hardware, Apple is testing the special glass as a way to let the TrueDepth system's infrared sensors pass through the panel without distortion. The approach is similar to existing industry techniques that use micro-perforated or nano-patterned glass to selectively improve IR transmission in a localized region above the sensor array. The report also suggests Apple's work has already prompted related suppliers to accelerate preparation for potential production.
