Motorola, which developes the PowerPC G4 used in Apple systems, today reported a fourth-quarter operating loss of US$90 million, compared to a profit of $362 million in the year-ago quarter. Including one-time charges, the company posted a $1.2 billion loss for the quarter, mostly due to restructuring costs. Revenue for the quarter dipped 25 percent from the year-ago period to $7.3 billion.

Realenduser has announced the results of its poll to discover the effectiveness of Apple’s online promotion for the launch of its new iMac. The results showed that the abandon rate of visitors to Apple’s Web site decreased dramatically during launch week, despite a slightly longer load time as compared to the prior week, and the site’s traffic increased by 107 percent.

EarthLink, the third largest Internet Service Provider and Apple’s ISP partner in the U.S., today reported a fourth-quarter loss of US$73.9 million, compared to a loss of $105.5 million in the year-ago quarter. Excluding one-time charges, the company posted a loss of $19.5 million, compared to $52.2 million. Revenues rose 14 percent to $372.2 million. EarthLink ended the year with 4.2 million dial-up subscribers and 256,000 broadband subscribers.

Netscape today filed suit against Microsoft “to seek redress for the Microsoft’s anti-competitive conduct.” The suit, which references previous judgments in 2000 and 2001 against Microsoft, seeks “injunctive relief sufficient to prevent further antitrust injury to Netscape” as well as an award for treble damages.
