However third-party retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy have deals on Apple products all year long. So if you want a new Apple device right now, there are plenty of discounts worth grabbing. Apple does offer year-round discounts to students, including a Back To School event where further-education students can get free AirPods or an Apple Pencil when purchasing certain Apple products from Apple. Apple’s higher education deal runs for about three months. It starts in Australia, New Zealand and other southern hemisphere countries in January, and runs in the rest of the world in June/July. There’s also the Apple Refurbished Store where you can often grab a bargain. Best AirPods deals The AirPods Pro 3 are out, but you can often pick up a deal on the AirPods Pro 2Foundry Apple released the AirPods Pro 3 (review) in September 2025, with a slightly new design, foam-infused eartips, and a heart-rate sensor. We gave them a near-perfect score in our review, but also noted that it’s a relatively small upgrade over the AirPods Pro 2, which has the same H2 chip and many similar features. Our recommendation is to look out for deals on the AirPods Pro 2, which have a new ‘unofficial’ price of $199/£199 now that the AirPods Pro 3 are here. Just note that the AirPods Pro 3 aren’t much more than that at $249 /£219, so it’s worth looking for bigger price drops. We’ve seen the AirPods Pro 2 drop to $169/£169, and a low of $139 over Black Friday! Right now they are out of stock at Amazon, though. The AirPods 4 (review) have been out for more than a year, but are still a fantastic pair of earbuds with or without ANC (active noise cancellation). Best iPhone deals You can save money on an iPhone if you know where to shop.Foundry | Alex Walker-Todd First up, some bad news if you are in the U.S. Most iPhone deals in the U.S. are through carriers and require a trade-in or adding a new line. Carriers will likely have enticing deals with trade-ins, but be wary of long-term contracts and terms. However, you can get some savings on unlocked iPhones at Apple’s Refurbished store. You can now pick up a refurbished iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max there, as well as an 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. We advise you to avoid the iPhone 16 because the iPhone 17 offers more storage at the equivalent price. Similarly, we advise avoiding the iPhone 15 because it doesn’t support Apple Intelligence features. Apple Refurbished, 512GB iPhone 16 Pro (unlocked) for $1,019 ($180 off) Apple Refurbished, 1TB iPhone 16 Pro (unlocked) for $1,269 ($230 off) Apple Refurbished, 512GB iPhone 15 Pro (unlocked) for $929 ($270 off) Apple Refurbished, 512GB iPhone 15 Pro Max (unlocked) for $1,019 ($280 off) In the U.K. there are less limitations on the sale of iPhones, so you will be able to pick one up unlocked at a discount if you would prefer to buy an iPhone up front to use with an existing contract. Apple only launched the iPhone 17 lineup in September, but during Black Friday we saw £100 off the iPhone Air, if you thought that was good, the price has now dropped to £849, which is £150 off! The iPhone 16e has £100 off at Amazon, as it did over Black Friday. You might see a discount on the iPhone 16, but we’d recommend buying the iPhone 17 instead as you get twice as much storage. Should you see a deal on the discontinued iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max that is worth consideration if its a big saving compared to the newer model. Best iPad deals Get more for your money with an on-sale iPad.Dominik Tomaszewski/IDG Apple updated the iPad Air with an M3 chip (review) and the iPad Pro with an M5 chip (review) in 2025. They’re both excellent tablets, and any buying decision comes down to preference and budget—if you’re largely using your tablet for consumption (streaming, surfing, games), get an Air, but if you have real work to do on it, get the Pro. We’re seeing $150 off the Pro right now, so grab a bargain from the list below while you can. Jason Cross/IDG Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 11 (review) in September 2025, but there weren’t many new features beyond better battery life and 5G networking. The two new health features, hypertension alerts and Sleep Score, are also available on the Series 10, so if we see a deal on the older model we’ll flag it below. The true hit of the 2025 Apple Watch lineup is the Apple Watch SE 3 (review), which got the biggest update of all three models, gaining an always-on display, temperature sensor, a faster chip, on-device Siri, and fast charging. We highly recommend it even at full price. At the high end, the Ultra 3 (review) has a slightly larger screen, satellite connectivity, and longer battery life than previously, but if we see a good deal on the Ultra 2 we will highlight it as a good alternative. The Mac mini M4 Pro version is a great low-cost way to get a really powerful Mac, and when you can get a good deal it’s worth grabbing. iPhone Lockdown Mode is so good even the FBI can’t crack it
Macworld FBI tech specialists have been unable to gain access to a journalist’s iPhone because it was in Lockdown Mode, court filings reveal. As part of an investigation into the suspected leaking of classified data by a Pentagon contractor, the FBI last month raided the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson and confiscated a wide range of devices, including an iPhone 13 and two MacBook Pros. They were able to access one of the MacBooks by pressing Natanson’s fingertip on the Touch ID sensor (which was permitted under the terms of the search warrant), but they had no such luck with the iPhone. “The iPhone was found powered on and charging, and its display noted that the phone was in ‘Lockdown’ mode,” representatives of the FBI report in a filing (via 404 Media) which opposes the return of the devices. “Because the iPhone was in Lockdown mode, [the Computer Analysis Response Team] could not extract that device.” As 404 observes, the filing was made roughly two weeks after the raid, which implies that FBI specialists were unable to break through Lockdown Mode for that length of time. This gives us a rare glimpse into the feature’s effectiveness. Lockdown Mode is a niche and rarely discussed iPhone security feature, an ultra-high-privacy setting, which was added in the iOS 16 software update back in 2022. It’s intended for iPhone owners working in specialised fields, such as journalism and political activism, where they could be targeted by state-sponsored spyware. The mode disables many features and impacts performance, but makes your device much more difficult to target. While its principal aim is to thwart mercenary spyware attacks, Lockdown Mode can also prevent data from being extracted thanks to a change in the way the locked-down device interacts with external accessories: namely, that the iPhone has to be unlocked for an accessory to be connected. As 404 points out, many digital forensics tools used by law enforcement depend on making a physical connection in a way that Lockdown Mode prevents. It’s debatable how Apple will feel about making headlines in this way. On the one hand, the situation serves as a reminder that iPhones have excellent security features, and that Apple is so committed to device privacy that it has made enemies in law enforcement. There are echoes of the San Bernardino case in 2015/2016, when Apple refused to write a custom iPhone OS to help the FBI access a mass shooter’s communications. But on the other hand, Apple approaches the political establishment in a slightly more conciliatory way these days. How would Tim Cook react if the president posted messages to Truth Social complaining about Lockdown Mode and demanding it be removed in future versions of iOS? It’s hard to say, but I imagine he’d like to avoid that conversation.

FBI Couldn't Get Into Reporter's iPhone Because It Had Lockdown Mode Enabled
The FBI has been unable to access a Washington Post reporter's seized iPhone because it was in Lockdown Mode, a sometimes overlooked feature that makes iPhones broadly more secure, according to recently filed court records. 404Media: The court record shows what devices and data the FBI was able to ultimately access, and which devices it could not, after raiding the home of the reporter, Hannah Natanson, in January as part of an investigation into leaks of classified information. It also provides rare insight into the apparent effectiveness of Lockdown Mode, or at least how effective it might be before the FBI may try other techniques to access the device. "Because the iPhone was in Lockdown mode, CART could not extract that device," the court record reads, referring to the FBI's Computer Analysis Response Team, a unit focused on performing forensic analyses of seized devices. The document is written by the government, and is opposing the return of Natanson's devices. The FBI raided Natanson's home as part of its investigation into government contractor Aurelio Perez-Lugones, who is charged with, among other things, retention of national defense information. The government believes Perez-Lugones was a source of Natanson's, and provided her with various pieces of classified information. While executing a search warrant for his mobile phone, investigators reviewed Signal messages between Pere-Lugones and the reporter, the Department of Justice previously said. From ‘1984’ to 2026: The complete history of Apple at the Super Bowl
Macworld You might have heard that the biggest football game of the year is happening this Sunday (“American football” for those in the U.K.). But it’s not just about the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks–the Super Bowl is the most-watched sporting event in the U.S. as much for the commercials as for the game. Apple made what is perhaps the most memorable commercial in Super Bowl history way back in 1984. This often leads to the thought that Apple and the Super Bowl go hand-in-hand, but actually, Apple’s history with the game is quite short. Still, every year we hope Apple uses the biggest stage to showcase or tease a new product. And every year we’re disappointed. But Apple Music does sponsor the Super Bowl halftime show, and this year it features pop superstar Bad Bunny. Suffice it to say, it will be watched by some 100 million people, one of the largest audiences Apple has ever had. It’s the fourth time Apple has sponsored the show, and, as with the previous shows, it will be a spectacle, though not really a showcase of Apple products. Before we get to Sunday, here’s a history of Apple at the Super Bowl. 1984 (1984) Apple’s “1984” ad is often called the greatest commercial in Super Bowl history. Directed by Ridley Scott of “Alien” and “Blade Runner” fame, the 60-second ad only aired once, as one of the first commercials in the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. Its theme was based on George Orwell’s novel, “1984,” and the commercial’s bleak, dystopian imagery struck a chord during an era of populist conservatism and the Cold War. It was designed to generate hype for the announcement of the Macintosh a couple of days later on January 24, 1984, and it certainly accomplished its goal. Scott’s direction left a lasting impression on popular culture, so much so that “Apple” and “Super Bowl” are synonymous–even though this ad didn’t feature a single Apple product. Lemmings (1985) In 1985, Apple–well aware of how effective “1984” was–aired a second ad during Super Bowl XIX. Titled “Lemmings,” the commercial was directed by Tony Scott, brother of Ridley, and features a similar tone to promote a new software suite called Macintosh Office, which was designed to connect a Macintosh to a printer and a file server. The ad tried to capture the tone of “1984” and it definitely left an impression on viewers–just not the one Apple intended. With a massive hype campaign that included seat cushions during the big game and full-page newspaper ads warning viewers to skip their fourth-quarter bathroom break–“Lemmings” didn’t sit well with viewers. People watching found the ad depressing and insulting, and nowhere near as enticing as “1984.” HAL (1999) After the “Lemmings” debacle, 15 years went by before Apple decided to debut a new commercial during the Super Bowl. The ad starred HAL from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and with Stanley Kubrick’s blessing, was part of a theme with the AI antagonist that included the Macworld San Francisco and WWDC keynotes. The ad came during a time when there was growing concern that computers would stop working in the new year because of the Y2K bug, since PCs couldn’t understand the year 2000, and chaos would ensue. Apple used the ad to promote the Mac’s immunity to the Y2K bug due to its ability to understand years up to 29,940. Even though the Y2K bug turned out to be much ado about nothing, Apple’s third and final Super Bowl ad became a cult hit among fans. I Fought the Law (2004) While not technically an Apple ad, Pepsi’s 2004 commercial to announce its partnership with iTunes certainly felt like one. Featuring a Green Day cover of Sonny Curtis’s “I Fought the Law,” the ad featured 16 teenagers who were sued by the RIAA for illegally downloading music from the internet during Napster’s popularity. Ironically, it’s the only Super Bowl ad here to actually feature an Apple product–not an iPod but an iMac G4. The ad and the promotional campaign were a hit and helped propel the iTunes Music Store, which was barely a year old at the time, to new heights. Rihanna (2023) After the HAL commercial, Apple didn’t have a direct presence during the Super Bowl. But Apple came back in 2023 as the major sponsor of the Super Bowl’s show within a show, the halftime presentation. Apple called it the Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show featuring Rihanna, who had not performed live in public since 2018. Apple hyped its new presence at the Super Bowl for weeks leading up to the game within Apple Music’s Road to Halftime section, which included radio shows, live broadcasts, interviews, and Apple Music playlists. Usher (2024) Apple’s sponsorship of the halftime show wasn’t a one-time thing. Apple came back the next year with the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show featuring User. Apple Music has a special section dedicated to the show, with a behind-the-scenes video (shot on iPhone, of course), the set list, Spatial Audio versions of songs, an interview, DJ mixes, and radio shows that were live from the Super Bowl. Kendrick Lamar (2025) The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show featuring Kendrick Lamar during Super Bowl LIX got a lot of buzz because of the “rap beef” between Lamar and Drake that had been going on before the game. According to the NFL, Lamar’s performance attracted 133.5 million viewers, the most ever for a Super Bowl halftime show. That’s a lot of eyes seeing the Apple Music logo. You can relive the performance on Apple Music or on YouTube. Bad Bunny (2026) Even though Apple Music is the sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the performer is chosen by Roc Nation, the entertainment company owned by rapper Jay-Z, according to The Athletic. This year, the pick is Bad Bunny, who hails from Puerto Rico (a U.S.-governed territory) and last weekend won several Grammy awards, including the coveted Album of the Year. The Bad Bunny Road to Halftime Apple Music site offers Spatial Audio, an interview, and a trailer; it will have more content leading up to and after the show. This year the Invites app has gotten into the fun too with an “exclusive visual featuring Bad Bunny. But will there be a new Apple ad during the big game as well? Thus far, there aren’t any rumors that Apple is running a commercial, but Apple would probably want to keep such a thing under wraps. Plus, it’s common for the halftime show sponsor to run an ad during the Super Bowl—Pepsi, Bridgestone, Sprint, AOL, and others all had separate ads in addition to the sponsorship. A Super Bowl spot is definitely possible, though it’s more likely that it’s a commercial in current rotation and not one that was specially made for the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl wouldn’t be super without Apple
Macworld Computers and sports–two things that should never be appreciated together, if you accept the high-school stereotypes about jocks versus nerds. Today we live in a post-Moneyball world where nerds with computers have quantified every aspect of athletic performance. But back in 1984, who would have expected that the big winner of the Super Bowl would be… Apple Computer? But it’s true: Apple and the Super Bowl have been making milestones for decades. It’s a nerds-and-jocks love story for the ages, except these days it’s more about musicians than jocks. Let’s look at Apple’s long history with the Super Bowl. The commercial era Of course, we begin with the most famous commercial in Super Bowl history: Apple’s “1984” ad. It aired during Super Bowl XVIII, in which the Los Angeles Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins 38 to 9. (That game kicked off a run of five straight Super Bowl blow-outs. It wasn’t a very good Super Bowl Era.) But Apple’s ad, directed by Ridley Scott, got everyone talking–and extended beyond the game, with news stories discussing its surprising impact. I can’t say for sure, but it feels like the cultural impact of the “1984” ad helped create the entire concept of the tentpole Super Bowl commercial, high-concept and high-priced productions designed to get people talking outside the game itself. These days, those kinds of ad campaigns are everywhere. In the weeks before the Super Bowl, ads begin to appear that are merely trailers for forthcoming Super Bowl ad campaigns. In the months afterward, those Super Bowl ads often get chopped up into smaller bits and recycled to help make the economics work. Apple’s “1984” ad wasn’t like that. While it was designed to tease the introduction of the original Macintosh–and what a modern concept that is, an ad that’s teasing the future release of an unannounced product–it was meant to stand alone. Scott’s commercial, featuring gray faces in rows listening to a Big Brother rant as a woman in colorful clothes runs in slow motion, chased by jack-booted thugs, played on (and amplified!) Apple’s reputation as a different kind of company. It seems like Apple’s board and its CEO, John Sculley, hated the ad. Steve Jobs loved it, because it was exactly his vibe: Apple as iconoclastic rebel, changing the world through the release of a very different kind of computer, the Mac. Of course, the next year, Apple blew it. As the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX, Apple aired the baffling ad “Lemmings,” directed by Ridley Scott’s brother Tony. It’s got the same discordant soundtrack, the same grim production design…it’s very clear that the brief was “let’s do that ‘1984’ ad again.” The ad features a bunch of blindfolded people in business attire marching in a sort of suicidal conga line until they plunge over a cliff one at a time, all while whistling off-key “High-Ho” from “Snow White.” The “Lemmings” voiceover, designed to mirror the voiceover at the end of “1984,” instead introduces something called The Macintosh Office. Don’t fret if you’ve never heard of the Macintosh Office, because it never really shipped. Besides, it was just a business bundle consisting of Macs, a file server (that never materialized), and a LaserWriter. Pause for a moment and marvel at just how badly the corporate suits misunderstood the power of “1984,” which showed a dystopia waiting to be disrupted by a revolutionary new product. They took the trappings of that ad and instead made it about a complicated business hardware bundle and portrayed the potential buyers as lemmings walking mindlessly over a cliff. A business hardware bundle! Why! What a disaster! The Apple Music era Please pause while we fast-forward from the era of Joe Montana to the era of Patrick Mahomes. (Yes, I’m skipping over the “HAL” commercial that aired during Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999.) Years later, Apple re-engaged with America’s big game, as the title sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show beginning with Super Bowl LVII in 2023. (For the record, it was a taut 38 to 35 win for Kansas City over the Philadelphia Eagles.) Apple replaced the previous title sponsor, Pepsi, using the halftime entertainment showcase to link prominent artists with its own music streaming service. The headliner of the first halftime was Rihanna, and it won two Emmy awards. Since then, the Apple Music Halftime Show has just sped onward. In 2024, Usher headlined (and Kansas City beat the 49ers, 25 to 22 in overtime). In 2025, it was Kendrick Lamar (and the Eagles gained their revenge by beating Kansas City by 18 points). Which brings us to this year. Apple’s special halftime guest is Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, who will become the first Spanish-language performer to headline a Super Bowl halftime. As you might expect, Apple enjoys having its brand be a major part of such a big event, and Apple executives are frequently spotted at the game. Last year, CEO Tim Cook and Apple Music chief Eddy Cue [hung out in the French Quarter ahead of the game at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans, and two years ago they were in Las Vegas hanging out with, among other people, Bad Bunny! The plot thickens. This year, Apple will undoubtedly be all over the event, because the Super Bowl is taking place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, only about six miles away from Apple Park as the crow flies. The real question is, will there be a fancy party at Apple Park for the NFL and music crowd? I wouldn’t put it past Eddy Cue.
