Kool Tools: VMware Fusion 4 vs 3.1

Since we’re MacTech, and we’re known for benchmarks, we get questions like “How much faster is VMware Fusion 4 vs. 3?” We decided to put VMware Fusion 4 to the test and compare version 4.0.1 to version 3.1.3, the previous version. Genuine Fractals grows into true creative tool

By Daniel East

onOne Software (http:www.oneononesoftware.com) has rebranded Genuine Fractals, the industry standard for image resizing, as Perfect Resize.

The new version has quite a few improvements to make enlarging your images easier and faster, but most importantly, look substantially better than what you can do with Photoshop alone. Many features on users’ wish lists were addressed by onOne to create a real creative tool versus what was considered a utility plug-in.

Joystick for the iPad is a retro thrill

My past in gaming involved videogames, not computer games . In my younger days, I owned a ColecoVision and an Atari 2600, Atari 4800 and Atari 7800. I enjoyed playing games like Pac-Man and Centipede using a joystick or trackpad.

I never adapted very well to playing computer games in which I navigate with the keyboard. I also don’t enjoy playing some iOS games that involve swiping — I’m talking about you, Pac-Man.

Inpaint works well — with simple digital objects that need removing

Inpaint for Mac (http://www.theinpaint.com/) lets you remove unwanted objects from a photo easily — as long as you’re not trying to remove complex objects.

You can use it to repair old photos, remove watermarks, remove unwanted objects do some digital facial retouching and removing date stamps. It works marvelously for smaller, simpler objects such as watermarks and date stamps. For larger, more complex, objects that need removing, the results can be a photo that’s obviously been tampered with.
