I was therefore delighted to test this latest version of the Alogic Edge Ultrawide Monitor that offers a “5K resolution” compared to the original 40-inch Edge’s QHD. Later, we’ll look at whether this monitor’s resolution is true 5K or something known as 5K2K, but first we should look at the monitor’s physical attributes. Then we’ll get into the details of resolution talk. Who the Alogic Edge Ultrawide Monitor is for: Mac productivity users, spreadsheets, timelines, multitaskers Who the Alogic Edge Ultrawide Monitor isn’t for: Pixel-perfection designers, gamers chasing high refresh rates Apple-friendly design The new 5K Edge boasts the same fine design as the QHD Edge, which is available in both 40-inch and 34-inch models. First, 40 inches is a lot of monitor. If your desk is a narrow one, you might want to reconsider an ultrawide monitor, but this near-meter-long screen will certainly not waste any space. The stand’s base measures 17.6 inches (45cm) wide— about as wide as a full-size Apple keyboard. It measures between an adjustable 22.4 inches (57cm) to 27.3 inches (69.5cm) tall, 37 inches (94.1cm) wide, and 9.6 inches (24.5cm) deep. Without the stand—you can attach the monitor to an arm via a 100×100 VESA mount—it measures 37 x 16.5 x 1.6 inches (94 x 42 x 4cm). It weighs 25.6lbs (11.6kg) with stand. The Edge continues Alogic’s pedigree of fantastic looking monitors. It matches Apple’s aesthetic and so looks great looming over a Mac Studio or Mac mini, or next to one of Apple’s MacBooks. Although its price of $1,299 looks expensive, compare that to the $1,599 of Apple’s 27-inch 5K Studio Display. The Studio Display price rises to $1,999 when you add the Tilt and Height Adjustable stand to match Alogic’s super stand. Alogic Edge 40-inch Ultrawide Monitor in Space Gray..Alogic It is available in either Silver or Space Gray to match your Mac. The Edge’s frame at its top is fine at just 8mm thin—about the same width an iPhone. Steve Jobs once joked that the back of Apple’s products looked better than the competition, and you could say the same about Alogic’s. The back of the screen’s tempered glass looks great, too, although it’s more than likely facing a wall. The back of the Edge monitor is made from tempered glass.Simon Jary Setting up the monitor is simple, but you’ll need some strength—the robust machined aluminum stand’s base weighs 9.3lbs (4.2kg) to bear the ultrawide screen with no wobble. The machined aluminum stand design is a two-piece that you’ll quickly put together with a single thumb screw connecting the stem and base, which then clicks into the rear of the display. My standard two-screen setup offers much but suffers in the center and takes up a lot of deskspace.Simon Jary Can one 40-inch ultrawide really replace two monitors? A wide screen might well mean you don’t need a dual screen setup, which would be wider still and take up even more desk space: two 27-inch screens side by side add up to a combined width of 4.1 feet (1.25m). Standard monitors, like Alogic’s own 27-inch Clarity displays, have an aspect ratio of 16:9. The ultrawide Edge has an aspect ratio of 21:9, so is much longer horizontally. That extra width is perfect for keeping lots of things onscreen in the same view and not layered under each other. Normally, you’d need a couple of monitors side by side to achieve this, and you should weigh up the pros and cons of a single monitor versus two side by side. It’s true that a two-screen setup offers some benefits that you don’t get with a single wide screen. You can sit straight in front of your main screen and angle the second to your left or right as your preference. Simon Jary But with one wide display, there’s less painful neck swivelling, and everything is on one screen and not rudely cut between the two at the center—although side-by-side monitors provide something of a natural separation if you are managing multiple applications. The single workspace makes for a smoother workflow, but the pixel density on each of the separate displays is likely to be better than with one ultrawide screen. I think the pixel density on this 5K2K model of Edge is enough for productivity tasks, which there is more of a question about with the 40-inch QHD model. Adding more screen space can enhance your productivity by having multiple applications, documents or websites open side by side and therefore more accessible. This could be a boon for content creators when editing, planning and reviewing a lot of content. Having such a wide screen helps with editing timelines with previews and tools above it. With more screen space it’s easier to switch between tasks without cluttering your screen or desk-based workspace. There’s enough room to split apps into three sections or four quads, for example. With one ultrawide screen there is less of an issue with matching specs, meaning you avoid potential color, brightness, and display quality discrepancies if the two monitors have different specifications. This simplifies the management of display settings compared to a dual monitor setup. Ultrawide monitors also offer the advantage of viewing movies in full size without letterboxing. Two monitors don’t just swallow up physical desk space, they require multiple video connections—often meaning you need to use a MacBook docking station. You can recreate the breadth of two side by side monitors with a single-cable, neater and more ergonomic widescreen display. Many ultrawide monitors, often aimed at gamers, are curved. A flat 40-inch ultrawide display is more appropriate to productivity jockeys. It’s probably not for graphics users who demand the very crispest detail, but the ultrawide aspect ratio makes it ideal for multitasking and working comfortably with multiple windows open in one view. Simon Jary Its stand remains one of the best we’ve tested, offering both tilt and height adjustment: 10 degrees Up/Down, and 45 degrees Left/Right. You have to do that adjustment only once with a single display. Is this really 5K – and does the difference matter One of the downsides of an ultrawide screen can be its pixel density. It’s something all ultra widescreen monitors must be judged on. The 40-inch QHD (3440×1440 or 4,953,600 pixels) Edge has a pixel density of 94 pixels per inch (ppi), which some declared not crisp enough when displaying text. With its 5120×2160 or 11,059,200 pixels, it has an extra 6,105,600 pixels to play with. As a result of that 123% increase, it’s pixel density is a significantly crisper 139ppi. That’s still not as super-sharp as the 27-inch Alogic Clairty 4K’s 163ppi or the 5K Apple Studio Display’s 218ppi, but it’s a noticeable improvement on the lesser-pixelled QHD model and is even higher than the 110ppi of the 34-inch widescreen Edge. If you are upgrading from an HD screen, you’ll be pleasantly surprised as that type of screen has a pixel density of just 82ppi. For an ultrawide screen, the 139ppi is noticeably superior to that of displays with lower resolutions. My graphic designer wife turned her nose up at the QHD Edge but was delighted by the 5K model. The new 40-inch Edge has what is known as a “5K2K” resolution: that’s 5120×2160 pixels (approximately 5K pixels by 2K pixels), which is fewer compared to a standard 5K’s 5120x 2880 pixels. That’s down to the ultrawide aspect of the monitor: 21:9 compared to a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. This monitor has a horizontal resolution of 5K (5120 pixels) but the vertical resolution of 4K (2160 pixels). Some call it “4K Ultrawide” but that’s confusing as there’s no 4K anywhere near the number of pixels. 5K2K is the best that resolution geeks have got to calling it, although WUHD (Wide Ultra High Definition) is also used to describe a 5120×2160 display. The ultrawide screen favors the longest Excel sheets—you can keep so much data in view without endless scrolling back and forth. The 40-inch width allowed me to fit almost four A4-wide Word docs side by side. The full 5120×2160-pixel resolution does, however, make the text too small to use without a magnifying glass. I found a 3840×1620 resolution easier on the eye. Alogic Screen features The screen uses In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology that can deliver great color accuracy when being viewed from different angles with minimal diminishment of image quality. Here are the all-important technical screen specifications. Maximum Resolution: 5120×2160 pixels (5K2K) Refresh Rate: 60Hz or 100Hz Response Time: 14ms Pixel Density: 139ppi Aspect Ratio: 21:9 Viewing Angle: 178°(H) / 178°(V) Brightness: 400 nits Contrast Ratio: 1200:1 Color Saturation (DCI-P3): 99% Color Saturation (sRGB): 100% Color Saturation (Adobe RGB): 94% Color Saturation (NTSC): 89% While the 100Hz refresh rate is superior to the standard 60Hz seen with 4K displays, gamers will demand higher and should look towards dedicated gaming displays, such as the curved 120Hz 40-inch LG UltraFine 5K2K WUHD Nano IPS Black Monitor, although that has a higher MSRP of $1,799 / £1,399. Alogic claims that its Edge 5K is “the first 5K2K designed for Apple users”, which I guess adds a level of subjectivity as to what “for Apple users” means. The LG UltraFine is a similar 5K2K Monitor that is compatible with macOS, but we have read some online complaints that it isn’t a perfect match with the Apple operating system. I haven’t tested the LG monitor so can’t compare it here. I do have several years’ experience working with Alogic displays and haven’t had any problems with my Mac mini and MacBook setups. The LG is similar in screen specs, aside from its higher refresh rate. Gamers will prefer its curved format, which makes for a more immersive experience and better peripheral coverage with fewer distractions. However, curved screens may introduce some image distortion with straight lines (hello, Excel) appearing curved. They are also tricky to wall mount, which is not a problem with the Edge. Hub and connections That ultrawide resolution matches the working comfort that I get from my usual two 27-inch display setup, but I need only one connection from my Mac mini to the single monitor’s hub. Compared to the Clarity monitor’s onboard hub, the Edge’s hub port configuration drops USB-A and USB-B (always a strange one anyway) as options and one HDMI for a DisplayPort option. Gigabit Ethernet and an audio port remain. Simon Jary Hub specs 1x USB-C to Host Connection with 90W Charging and Data 1x HDMI 2.0 port 1x DisplayPort 1.4 port 2x USB-C ports (USB 2.0, 5W Charging) 1x 3.5mm Audio Output 1x Gigabit Ethernet port You may well use one of the spare USB-C ports to connect a webcam, as the Edge lacks its own. The two spare USB-C ports are primarily for light charging purposes as the data-transfer speed is USB 2.0’s measly 480Mbps rather than the USB-C to host connection’s 5Gbps speed. They are fine for connecting a wired keyboard and mouse or giving power to low-input devices such as your Apple Watch or AirPods. This is not a Thunderbolt dock replacement. Alogic’s own Illuminate Light Bar Webcam perches on top of the Edge, providing light and a 12-megapixel (4K) webcam.Simon Jary Alogic recommends its own $189 / £119 Illuminate USB-C Light Bar Webcam that includes a light you can dim and adjust color temperature. This works well, although I can never remember how to turn the thing off and there’s no obvious button to do so. Also, the Edge doesn’t pull as low as smaller monitors so you’ll need to seriously angle the webcam to fit in the picture. In its defence, the Illuminate is easy to angle, but I’d have preferred the Edge to go a little lower. It also comes with a neat magnetic wireless light dial. The 5Gbps USB-C connection to host is underpowered compared to the Mac’s own 40-80Gbps Thunderbolt 4 or 5 so if you need multiple fast ports you should invest in a premium dock or more affordable hub. The similar LG Monitor mentioned earlier features a much beefier 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 connection plus four 10Gbps USB-C ports. It lacks a power brick, which is a plus in some ways but a major minus in another: there are some user complaints that the built-in power supply means a noisy fan. In comparison, the Alogic Edge is silence itself. Importantly, the Edge’s hub is powerful enough for the key video connection, and you can choose between USB-C, HDMI or DisplayPort. Edge doesn’t require the extra bandwidth DisplayPort can offer over HDMI, so users can connect with either cable knowing they’re getting the full visual experience. There are no advantages to using HDMI or DisplayPort instead of USB-C. Mac users could use one of the other connections if they’re already using the USB-C ports on their computer or want to connect multiple host devices to the monitor. The Edge doesn’t support monitor daisy chaining, where you can run a second display from the hub’s ports. To be honest, the 40-inch Edge is all the monitor you probably need but it is a feature found on some other displays. It’s likely that even if it could connect another display from the 5Gbps Edge that second one would only mirror rather than extend the screen. Using USB-C means you can passthrough power your laptop by up to 90W, which is enough for most MacBooks, and take advantage of the ports in the hub at the back of the Edge display, such as the wired Gigabit Ethernet connection. The Edge includes built-in 3W speakers that are fine for video/voice calls but not what you’d enjoy using to listen to music or a movie. There’s a 3.5mm audio port that can be used to attach wired headphones or speakers, but not an audio-in microphone. Alogic Edge 40-inch Ultrawide Monitor in Silver..Alogic Price The 40-inch 5K2K Edge is priced at $1,499.99 / £1,299.99. Compared to buying two displays, this is an affordable price for the huge amount of screen real estate on offer. For more options we have reviewed the best Mac monitors in various sizes and forms. There’s no way you could describe the Edge as portable, but we’ve reviewed the best Mac portable displays if you want to pack up or pick up your monitor. At $1,799.99, the similar LG 40-inch Ultrafine is a noticeable jump up in price but does boast a higher refresh rate and superior hub of ports. Again, we haven’t tested that model, and its curvature may put off non-gamers. If a webcam is important to you (and who doesn’t use one at least occasionally?) the $189.99 Illuminate Light Bar adds (significantly) to the cost although you can pick a more affordable option from any of the best Mac webcams we recommend. Should you buy the Alogic Edge Ultrawide 5K Monitor? With its ultrawide display and greatly increased resolution and resulting pixel density, the good-looking and flexible 40-inch 5K2K Alogic Edge creates a more ergonomic alternative to having two monitors side by side, but with a similarly convenient working screen space. This ultrawide monitor is a credible, Mac-friendly replacement for two monitors.

Apple claims the European Commission is refusing to let to implement App Store changes, instead using "political delay tactics" to levy unfair investigations and fines. Apple provided the statement to Bloomberg in response to MacPaw's decision to shut down alternative iOS app marketplace Setapp Mobile in the EU because of the complicated business terms that it has to deal with. The European Commission has refused to let us implement the very changes that they requested. In October, we submitted a formal compliance plan and they have yet to respond. The EC is using political delay tactics to mislead the public, move the goal posts, and unfairly target an American company with burdensome investigations and onerous fines. MacPaw plans to sunset Setapp Mobile in the EU on February 16, 2026. The company said it was shutting down the app because of "complex business terms that don't fit Setapp's current business model," but MacPaw did not go into further detail. Apple does indeed have a complicated fee structure in Europe, for both app marketplaces and the apps that are distributed through them. Apple allows for app marketplaces in the EU because of the Digital Markets Act, which is policed by the European Commission. The European Commission is gearing up to blame Apple for Setapp's EU shutdown, according to information viewed by Bloomberg. "Apple has not rolled out changes to address the key issues concerning its business terms, including their complexity," the EC reportedly plans to say. Apple says that it has not simplified its EU business terms as expected because of the European Commission's refusal to let it implement the changes. Apple's hardware chief John Ternus has been overseeing Apple design teams since late last year as Apple continues preparing him to take over as CEO, reports Bloomberg. Apple CEO Tim Cook put Ternus in charge of the design teams the final months of 2025, expanding his responsibilities. Apple's software and hardware design teams were most recently managed by former Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams, who retired from Apple in 2025. When Williams retired, Apple said the design teams would report directly to Cook, but Cook apparently handed the reins to Ternus. Design is one of the most important divisions at Apple, and it has always been led by a senior executive. Jony Ive was in charge of the design team before he left and it was given to Williams. Ternus is apparently the "executive sponsor" of all design on Cook's management team, which means he handles communications between design staff and the executive team. He represents the design team in executive gatherings, and manages design team leaders. Bloomberg claims that inside sources said Cook is aiming to expose Ternus to more parts of the company's operations. Design decisions are made by consensus, so while Ternus is taking on a larger role, software engineering chief Craig Federighi and marketing chief Greg Joswiak continue to have a say in Apple's overall aesthetic. Multiple reports have suggested that Ternus is the most likely candidate to take on the role of Apple CEO when Cook retires. Cook turned 65 last year, but there do not appear to be any imminent plans for his retirement. Ternus is Apple's youngest senior executive at 50, so he could have a long run if he is eventually promoted to CEO. Ternus leads Apple's hardware engineering team, and he has been described as having an even temperament, strong attention to detail, and intimate knowledge of Apple's supply chain. MacBook Pro to Receive Up to Six New Features by Next Year
Apple is expected to release MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips soon, but you might want to pass on them, as bigger changes are around the corner. It has been reported that the MacBook Pro will be receiving a major redesign in late 2026 or in 2027. Six new features have been rumored so far, including an OLED display, touch capabilities, a Dynamic Island, M6 Pro and M6 Max chips manufactured with TSMC's advanced 2nm process, a thinner design, and built-in cellular connectivity. The exact launch timing remains to be seen. Apple has updated the MacBook Pro twice in one year in the past, with the M2 Pro and M2 Max models debuting in January 2023 and the M3 Pro and M3 Max models following in October 2023, so there is a chance that the M5 Pro and M5 Max models could debut soon and the models with OLED displays could follow later this year. However, 2027 seems like a safer bet for now. Keep in mind that the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip is not expected to receive many of the changes listed below. Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021, when the M1 Pro and M1 Max models launched. OLED Display Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and others have indicated that the two-generations-away MacBook Pro models will have OLED displays. The current MacBook Pro models are equipped with LCD displays with mini-LED backlighting. The move to OLED technology would result in improved image quality, thanks to richer colors and higher contrast ratio with true blacks. All of the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad Pro models that Apple sells today are already equipped with OLED displays, excluding refurbished models. Touch Screen Not only will the MacBook Pro be moving to OLED, but the displays will apparently have touch-screen capabilities too. This functionality would allow Mac users to use both their fingers and a keyboard and mouse/trackpad for input. Steve Jobs said that a touch-screen Mac would cause arm fatigue, but he made that comment a long time ago, and Apple does reverse course from time to time. Dynamic Island Yet another display-related change on these MacBook Pro models will be a hole-punch camera, according to Gurman. As a result, he said that the MacBook Pro will no longer have a notch. Instead, he expects a Dynamic Island or something "similar." With a Dynamic Island, the MacBook Pro would move one step closer to a truly edge-to-edge display with thin bezels. Like on the iPhone, the Dynamic Island would display things such as low battery life alerts and AirPods connection indicators in the area surrounding the hole-punch camera at the top-center part of the screen. M6 Pro and M6 Max Chips This one is obvious, but the two-generations-away MacBook Pro models will be powered by Apple's two-generations-away M6 Pro and M6 Max chips. Notably, these chips are expected to be manufactured with TSMC's advanced 2nm process, which should result in greater year-over-year performance and efficiency gains than usual. The current M4 Pro and M4 Max chips and the upcoming M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are or will be built with TSMC's 3nm processes. Thinner Design Yet another MacBook Pro rumor shared by Gurman is a thinner design versus existing models. The move from LCD with mini-LED backlighting to OLED would contribute to the thinner design, and there could be other changes that help to slim things down. As of now, there has been no indication that Apple plans to once again remove ports like HDMI, MagSafe, or the SD card slot in order to achieve this thinner design, but we shall see. That was a very unpopular decision the last time it happened. Cellular Macs can already connect to a cellular network via the Personal Hotspot feature on a nearby iPhone or iPad, but Apple has reportedly at least considered built-in cellular connectivity for future Macs. Apple is considering a significant shift in how it operates Siri by potentially running its next-generation chatbot on Google's cloud infrastructure rather than entirely on its own Private Cloud Compute servers, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In yesterday's report detailing Apple's plans to turn ‌Siri‌ into a chatbot in iOS 27, Gurman said that the company is in discussions with Google about hosting the forthcoming ‌Siri‌ chatbot on Google-owned servers powered by Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), a class of custom chips designed specifically for large-scale artificial intelligence workloads. The arrangement would mark a major departure from Apple's emphasis on processing user requests either directly on-device or through its own tightly controlled Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. In a potential policy shift for Apple, the two partners are discussing hosting the chatbot directly on Google servers running powerful chips known as TPUs, or tensor processing units. The more immediate Siri update, in contrast, will operate on Apple's own Private Cloud Compute servers, which rely on high-end Mac chips for processing. The near-term ‌Siri‌ improvements in iOS 26.4 are still expected to run on Apple's own Private Cloud Compute servers, which the company unveiled in 2024 as a privacy-focused alternative to on-device processing. Private Cloud Compute relies on Apple-designed servers built around high-end Mac chips, and Apple has positioned the system as one where user data is processed temporarily and not retained, not even being accessible to Apple itself. Those claims have been central to Apple's public messaging around Apple Intelligence. The more advanced ‌Siri‌ chatbot planned for the following major operating system update is expected to rely on a newer and more capable large language model developed by Google. This model is internally referred to as Apple Foundation Models version 11 and is comparable in capability to Google's latest Gemini models. Running such a model at scale may exceed the practical capacity of Apple's current Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, prompting the need to use Google's significantly larger, specialized cloud footprint and AI hardware. The possibility of running ‌Siri‌ requests on Google servers does not necessarily mean Google would gain access to user data in a conventional sense. Any iPhone, iPad, or Mac with a ProMotion display is capable of rendering buttery smooth 120Hz animations. However, Apple's Safari browser is locked to 60fps page rendering by default, making scrolling feel noticeably choppier for some users than in Chrome or Firefox. Thankfully, recent versions of Safari include a hidden setting that lets you unlock 120Hz rendering. At 60Hz, your screen refreshes every 16.7 milliseconds, meaning each frame of a scrolling page stays on screen for that duration. At 120Hz, the refresh interval drops to 8.3 milliseconds, so the image updates twice as often. This reduces the perceived blur and judder as content moves across the screen, making motion look more fluid and responsive. For a better idea of the difference, visit Blur Buster's Motion Tests webpage and watch the refresh rate test in Safari. The difference is most noticeable when scrolling text-heavy pages or panning across detailed content. That said, the improvement is more dramatic for some people than others. If you've never noticed Safari feeling "off" compared to other apps, you may not register much difference. But if you've used Chrome or Firefox on the same device and wondered why Safari felt slightly sluggish, this is the reason. The 120Hz option is buried in Safari's Feature Flags, a developer-focused menu that doesn't require any special mode to access on iPhone or iPad. On Mac, you'll need to enable developer features first, but it's a straightforward process. Keep in mind that turning on 120Hz may impact your device's battery life if you tend to browse a lot. Here's how to enable 120Hz scrolling on all your Apple devices. Enable 120Hz Safari Browsing iPhone and iPad Open the Settings app. Scroll down and tap Apps. Tap Safari. Scroll to the bottom and tap Advanced. Tap Feature Flags at the bottom of the list. Scroll to Prefer Page Rendering Updates near 60fps and toggle it off. Force quit Safari and reopen it. With this setting disabled, Safari will now render pages at up to 120Hz on ProMotion-equipped devices, including iPhone 13 Pro and later, and iPad Pro models with ProMotion. Enable 120Hz Safari Browsing on Mac Enabling 120Hz on Mac requires a few extra steps to reveal the Feature Flags menu. Open Safari, then click Safari in the menu bar and choose Settings.... Click the Advanced tab. At the bottom of the pane, check the box next to Show features for web developers. A new Feature Flags tab will appear in the toolbar – click it. In the search field at the top right, type 60fps. Uncheck Prefer Page Rendering Updates near 60fps. Quit Safari completely and reopen it. This works on any Mac with a ProMotion display, which includes the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 and later. If you have external displays connected to your Mac that are capable of refreshing at 120Hz, they should also benefit from the change. The now-retired analyst said he still expects Apple's 2028 iPhone Pro models to feature a centered hole-punch cutout in the display – presumably housed within the same smaller Dynamic Island – rather than a true all-screen design. That device could be released as soon as this spring, according to two of the people. We've heard a lot of rumors about the home hub because it was supposed to launch in 2025, but to date, no rumors have suggested that it will have a swiveling robotic base. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously said that Apple is developing two versions of the hub, one that's meant to be mounted on the wall and another that has a HomePod mini-like speaker base that can be placed on a desktop or countertop. No prior descriptions of the home hub base have suggested that it will have any kind of swivel function or that it will be robotic. In fact, the wording sounds similar to how Gurman has described Apple's tabletop robot, which will be a 2027 follow up to the home hub. Gurman said the tabletop robot will have an iPad-like display mounted on a thin robotic arm that allows the display to tilt up and down and rotate 360 degrees. The device will be able to reposition itself to face whoever is speaking, and it is said to have a "visual personality." Ma did not go into detail on the purpose of the robotic swiveling base, or how it will work, but presumably it would be able to move to face people. The home hub is supposed to have an array of sensors that let it determine when someone is in the room. Will Apple Charge for Its Siri Chatbot?
Apple is apparently working on a Siri chatbot that will rival Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT, and Apple is aiming to debut it in less than six months when iOS 27 is unveiled at WWDC. Bloomberg shared details on the chatbot earlier today, but there was one major question unanswered: what will Apple charge? Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies that run major chatbots offer a free version, but it's often throttled and a paid subscription is required for full functionality. Apple is reportedly planning to integrate its Siri chatbot deeply into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS instead of offering a standalone app. A ‌Siri‌ chatbot available on billions of devices is going to be expensive to run, but ‌Siri‌ is also so core to Apple products that people aren't going to want to pay for what's always been free. What the Siri Chatbot Can Do Per Bloomberg, the ‌Siri‌ chatbot will be able to "search the web for information, create content, generate images, summarize information and analyze uploaded files." It will also be able to control Apple devices and use personal data and on-screen information for search and to complete tasks. That sounds like just about everything that existing chatbots like ChatGPT can do, plus Apple is integrating the chatbot into all of its apps. On-Device Siri Chatbot? Some of those tasks can be completed on-device using the powerful A-series and M-series chips Apple has been building into its products, but Apple is using a custom AI model developed with the Google Gemini team. According to Bloomberg, the model is roughly comparable to Gemini 3, and the full version of Gemini 3 can't run on a high-end Mac, let alone a mobile device. Apple is going to need servers to run the ‌Siri‌ chatbot, and while it has been building Private Cloud Compute servers for AI features, it's unlikely that it has enough for a ‌Siri‌ chatbot. Bloomberg suggests that Apple is actually discussing running its chatbot on Google servers, and Google isn't going to do that for free. Compute Costs and Infrastructure Whether Apple is using its own private cloud compute servers or Google's Tensor servers, it needs serious compute power. Every question ‌Siri‌ is asked and every image ‌Siri‌ generates will cost Apple. OpenAI is not profitable, and it spends billions on inference each year. OpenAI has committed to spending $1.4 trillion on infrastructure to keep up with demand, an amount of money that it doesn't have yet. Google spent $85 billion on infrastructure to meet AI demand in 2025. In August, Google said that the median Gemini Apps text prompt uses 0.24 watt-hours of energy. At scale, across all Google devices and all Google products, that's hundreds of millions of dollars per year just in electricity costs. How Gemini is Priced Google has already integrated Gemini into its Pixel smartphones and other Android devices. It has a split tier system that Apple might adopt. Android users have access to a free version of Gemini that costs Google less to run. It can answer questions, summarize text, write emails, and control apps and smartphone features. Android users have to pay $20 per month for Gemini Advanced to get access to the more advanced version of Gemini that offers better reasoning, longer context for analyzing bigger documents, and improved coding. Apple could do something similar, offering a basic version of ‌Siri‌ that's accessible to everyone, with more advanced models available with a subscription. iCloud already provides a model for a free/paid product split. Apple offers all Apple users 5GB of cloud storage for free, but anything more will cost you. Temporarily Free? Apple could make its ‌Siri‌ chatbot free to use to begin with, which would lure users who are paying for other services like ChatGPT. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all around $20 per month, so Apple eating ‌Siri‌ chatbot costs for a year or two would be hard to compete with. Even undercutting current prices would likely lure customers and make Apple an immediate key player in the AI market. Right now, Apple Intelligence is entirely free to use even for images generated with Image Playground, but the capabilities are limited and some functionality runs on-device. Possible Cost Apple might not be able to absorb AI costs, and there could be paid options right when the ‌Siri‌ chatbot launches. If that's the case, pricing will likely be competitive with existing chatbots. AI companies have decided entry-level plans should cost $20/month, but it's not clear if that price point is actually sustainable with the growing costs of training new models and supporting more users. ChatGPT Plus - $20/month Copilot Pro - $20/month Gemini Advanced - $19.99/month Claude Pro - $20/month Perplexity Pro - $20/month Siri ChatGPT Integration Right now, Apple has a partnership with OpenAI to hand complex requests off to ChatGPT. Apple doesn't pay OpenAI for this feature, but it does put ChatGPT in front of millions of Apple users. When Apple launches its ‌Siri‌ chatbot, ChatGPT integration could be removed. Eliminating the ChatGPT integration might also impact Apple's legal battle with Elon Musk. Musk's xAI company sued Apple and OpenAI for colluding to promote ChatGPT over other AI bots like Grok, arguing that Apple should let other chatbots integrate with ‌Siri‌. If Apple stops offering ChatGPT through ‌Siri‌ in favor of its own ‌Siri‌ chatbot, it would be no different than Google integrating Gemini into all Android devices, or Meta limiting its smart glasses to Meta AI. Last year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman detailed a Veritas chatbot to test the new version of Siri, and now Macworld has shared details on two other AI tools that Apple employees are allegedly using. Enchanté is apparently a chatbot that rolled out to employees in November 2025, and it is an "internal ChatGPT-like assistant" that Apple workers can use for "ideas, development, proofreading, and even general knowledge answers." The tool is said to look similar to the ChatGPT app for macOS, and it runs models approved by Apple. It is run locally or on private servers, and it incorporates Apple Foundation Models, Claude, and Gemini. Employees can upload documents, images, and files for analysis, and the app can access files stored on a Mac. Apple encourages employees to use Enchanté as a test platform and for everyday work tasks, because it incorporates Apple internal documentation and guidelines. The second AI tool that Apple developed is called Enterprise Assistant, and it is designed to be a knowledge hub for corporate employees. In addition to updating many of its existing products, Apple is expected to unveil five all-new products this year, including a smart home hub, a Face ID doorbell, a MacBook with an A18 Pro chip, a foldable iPhone, and augmented reality glasses. Below, we have recapped rumored features for each product. Smart Home Hub Apple home hub (concept) Apple's long-rumored smart home hub should be released this year, according to rumors. The device was originally expected to be unveiled last year, but the launch was reportedly postponed until the more personalized version of Siri is ready. The home hub is rumored to feature a 6-inch to 7-inch square display, and an A18 chip for Apple Intelligence support. The device can reportedly be attached to a speaker base, or mounted on a wall, and it would allow users to control smart home accessories, make FaceTime video calls, and more. It might even double as a home security system. Smart Doorbell In December 2024, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple was in the early stages of developing a smart home doorbell and lock system with Face ID. He said the doorbell would wirelessly connect to a compatible deadbolt lock. Gurman said Apple's doorbell would launch in 2026 at the earliest, so it could be unveiled this year if that timeframe remains accurate. Apple would surely tout the privacy and security benefits of its own smart home doorbell. Apple already offers a HomeKit Secure Video service with end-to-end encryption for storing footage in iCloud, and the doorbell could have a Secure Enclave. The doorbell would be one of several new smart home products that Apple is reportedly planning, with the others being the aforementioned smart home hub, and own HomeKit-enabled indoor camera. This would add to a lineup of home products that already includes the Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod mini. MacBook With A18 Pro Chip Apple plans to release a lower-priced MacBook with a version of the iPhone 16 Pro's A18 Pro chip this year, according to several reports and leakers. This would be an all-new model positioned below the MacBook Air in the Mac lineup. Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was first to reveal that Apple is allegedly planning a more affordable MacBook. Last year, he said the laptop would have around a 13-inch display and come in silver, blue, pink, and yellow finishes. A few rumors have specifically mentioned that it will have a 12.9-inch display. The lower-cost MacBook could have a lot in common with the discontinued 12-inch MacBook, including an ultra-thin and lightweight design. However, that model was powered by Intel processors. Apple stopped selling the 12-inch MacBook in July 2019, so there has been a long wait for a similar model powered by Apple silicon. In the iPhone 16 Pro, the A18 Pro chip has a 6-core CPU and a 6-core GPU. The chip's performance is similar to the M1 chip, so this new MacBook could effectively be a replacement for the old MacBook Air with the M1 chip, which Apple still sells through Walmart for $599. The new MacBook would likely start at $699 or $799. With the A18 Pro chip, the lower-cost MacBook might have only 8GB of RAM, whereas all current MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models start with at least 16GB of RAM. The chip also lacks Thunderbolt support, so the new MacBook would likely be equipped with regular USB-C ports, with slower data transfer speeds and external display limitations. Foldable iPhone A foldable iPhone (concept) Following years of rumors, Apple is expected to release its long-awaited foldable iPhone in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, the device will open up like a book, providing users with a large screen for watching videos, playing games, and multitasking. The foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 7.7-inch inner display, and a 5.3-inch outer display, according to the latest report. The device will apparently have a virtually "crease-free" inner display supplied by Samsung. Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to have two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID. This will undoubtedly be Apple's most expensive iPhone ever. Augmented Reality Glasses Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses Apple reportedly plans to unveil augmented reality smart glasses as early as this year, although they might not begin arriving to customers until 2027. Apple's glasses would compete with the Meta Ray-Bans, which now offer an in-lens display. Apple's Secret Product Plans Stolen in Luxshare Cyberattack
The Apple supplier subject to a major cyberattack last month was China's Luxshare, it has now emerged. More than 1TB of confidential Apple information was reportedly stolen. It was reported in December that one of Apple's assemblers suffered a significant cyberattack that may have compromised sensitive production-line information and manufacturing data linked to Apple. The specific company targeted, the scope of the breach, and its operational impact were unclear until now. The attack was first revealed on RansomHub's dark web leak site on December 15, 2025, where the group claimed it had encrypted internal Luxshare systems and exfiltrated large volumes of confidential data belonging to the company and its customers. The attackers warned that the information would be publicly released unless Luxshare contacted them to negotiate, and accused the company of attempting to conceal the incident. According to the attackers' claims, the exfiltrated material includes vital files such as detailed 3D CAD product models and high-precision geometric files, 2D manufacturing drawings, mechanical component designs, circuit board layouts, and internal engineering PDFs. The group added that the large archives include Apple product data as well as information belonging to Nvidia, LG, Tesla, Geely, and other major clients. The attackers subsequently wrote that Luxshare management had been given time to respond but had failed to do so, and that the stolen archives contained confidential project documentation protected under non-disclosure agreements. The post was accompanied by data samples that the group said were provided as proof of compromise. Cybernews reported that its research team reviewed portions of the leaked sample data attached to the post and found what appeared to be legitimate internal Luxshare documentation tied to Apple projects. The materials explain confidential repair procedures and logistics workflows between Apple and Luxshare, including detailed process descriptions, timelines, and partner coordination documents. Files commonly used in product design and manufacturing workflows, such as .dwg and Gerber files, were present in the samples reviewed. The projects referenced in the samples span a period from 2019 through to 2025. As such, it seems likely that unreleased products may be included. The researchers also said the sample data appears to include personally identifiable information of individuals involved in Apple projects, such as full names, job titles, and work email addresses. Access to detailed engineering designs and manufacturing documentation could pose risks if they are misused, such as product reverse engineering, counterfeit manufacturing, and targeted attacks on hardware or firmware facilitated by detailed knowledge of device layouts and component interactions. Exposure of employee contact information and internal workflows could also increase the risk of targeted phishing or follow-on intrusions against Apple's other partners.
