Macworld When the Apple Store goes offline it’s usually an indication that Apple is about to launch a new product. Sometimes it’s for less good reasons, like price increases as might be the case this time. Why is the Apple Store down? Are you having trouble browsing the Apple Store online? There are a few reasons why the Apple Store might be offline. It could be because Apple is preparing to launch new products at an event, or it could be because Apple is about to start taking pre-orders for a new product. If you are reading this story and it’s the day of an Apple Event then yes, the store is down. Apple has taken it offline while it prepares for new product launches. The store always tends to go offline just before an event–to find out if an event is expected today read: When is Apple’s next event? Even if there isn’t an event planned, there’s also the possibility that the Apple Store could be closed while Apple updates it with new products that will launch later–or perhaps new products are up for pre-order, as was the case in September 2025, when the iPhone 17 became available. Wondering whether there are new products expected? Take a look at our New Apple Products round-up. Sometimes Apple just issues a press release relating to new products that it won’t be announcing at an event. You may be wondering what time the Apple Store goes down and when Apple makes the announcement. Events tend to start at 10 a.m. at Apple’s HQ in California, which is 1 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. U.K. time. The Apple Store tends to go down at around 5 a.m. ET, 4 a.m. PT, 12 p.m. UK time on those days. If there is no event and the Apple Store is down it could be because Apple is about to issue new product news in a press release. The news usually arrives at around 11 a.m. ET, 8 a.m. PT, and 4 p.m. in the UK. Other reasons why the Apple Store could be down However, there are other reasons why the Apple Store can be down, so if you are here on a day when there is no event or pre-orders planned, check the other reasons why the Apple Store could be down below. Apple could be updating the online store Before we explain how to check the status of Apple’s online store, we should first explain the possible reasons why the store might be down. The most exciting reason is that Apple could be updating the store with new products.  Apple tends to shut down the Apple Store while it updates the range of products available, whether it be removing old products and adjusting pricing or featuring the latest iPhone or iPad. The tell-tale difference between server issues and Apple updating the Store is the splash page that you land on. If the Apple Store is down due to product changes, a message along the lines of ‘We’ll be right back’ (It used to say: ‘We’ll be back soon’) should be displayed. If this is the case, you don’t need to do anything else: there are no server issues, you just need to sit tight and wait for Apple to update the Store. The Apple Store is down However, if when you try to access the Apple Store you get a 404 error message (or if the site isn’t performing as you’d expect) then there may be an issue with Apple’s servers. To determine whether this is the issue, you can skip the next section and read about how to check the system status below. You are using an outdated version of Safari or macOS If you’re struggling to access the Apple Store, while other people are having no problems, it might be due to your outdated software. If this is the case the message ‘unsupported browser version’ will display when trying to visit the page on older versions. The store also appears to be unavailable when any of the older macOS versions, including macOS Yosemite or Sierra, on other browsers. The likes of Chrome and Firefox will not work unless you update to a recent build. This is thought to be an attempt by Apple to protect its customers from any potential threats. How to check Apple’s System Status The first step in establishing whether the Apple Store is down (apart from going on the site itself!) is to visit Apple’s System Status website. This site displays the current status of every Apple service, from iOS device activations to iCloud and, of course, the Apple Online Store. It not only informs users of any potential problems with the online services, but also gives users a heads up on any scheduled maintenance that could cause issues. It also indicates whether there were recent disruptions that have now been resolved. If you see a message next to the Apple Online Store status, click it. It should bring up more details about the issue including the duration of the outage and the issues that users would have/are experiencing. Down Detector is a hugely popular third-party status website that relies on crowdsourced information from users to provide up-to-date statuses on a range of online services from PayPal to Steam and the Apple Store too. The site allows users to report issues and allows you to see past issues that have affected the performance of the service. It also features a handy heat map of live outages, so you can see whether the issue is local to your city/region/country. Another good resource is the aptly named Is It Down Right Now?. The site offers similar data to Down Detector but also features a grid displaying access speeds over the past few days. It works in a different way to Down Detector though, as you have to search for the service via URL, and at the time of writing, it checks the status of the entire Apple website, not specifically the Apple Store. iOS 27’s Shortcuts is AI at its best
Macworld There’s a reason why so many Apple enthusiasts love the Shortcuts app. Like Automator on the Mac, it’s one of the most powerful tools on your iPhone. With Shortcuts, you can automate simple tasks or even create complex workflows that link multiple apps and actions together—if you know how to use it. The problem with Shortcuts is that it’s complicated, and most users have no idea how to use it. Even if you consider yourself an advanced user, there are so many options within Shortcuts that finding the one you need can take quite a while. With iOS 27, Apple is finally building Shortcuts for everyone. With a complete revamp of the Shortcuts experience, Apple is using AI to make Shortcuts drop-dead simple to use without sacrificing any of its power. Shortcuts have always been anything but short Since acquiring the Workflow app in March 2017 and turning it into Shortcuts a few months later, Apple has spent years building an incredible automation platform. For those who use it, Shortcuts has become an incredible tool over the past 10 years and is one of my favorite tools on iOS. The possibilities are endless. You can create a shortcut that automatically turns on Low Power Mode when your battery reaches a level other than 20 percent, or something much more complex that detects when you’ve arrived home to turn on the lights and play a specific playlist on your HomePod. Apple’s Shortcuts app is an overwhelming series of steps if you’re not familiar with programming.Apple Here, for example, I have a shortcut that detects when my iPhone is plugged in to enable Always-on Display. When I unplug my phone, it instantly turns off the feature to save battery life. Others use Shortcuts to change app icons, system sounds, rename files, summarize meetings, and much more. But the thing is, the Shortcuts app has always been a bit intimidating for the average user. If you had no idea where to start, using the app could feel like you need to understand programming. There are actions, variables, conditions, app integrations, triggers, and automation logic. Even relatively simple shortcuts can require digging through long lists of actions and hoping you selected the correct ones in the right order. The app can do amazing things, but most users simply haven’t figured out how to access them. That’s why Apple’s new AI-powered Shortcuts experience in iOS 27 may end up being one of the most important Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026. The new Shortcuts app puts natural-language voice commands front and center.Apple Shortcuts is now built entirely around Apple Intelligence As part of iOS 27, the new Shortcuts app is built entirely around Apple Intelligence. Instead of having to search for actions and triggers, users can now describe automations in natural language and let Apple Intelligence assemble the workflow automatically. For example, you can now ask Shortcuts to automatically open a specific app when you connect your iPad to the Magic Keyboard, turn on the porch lights when your food delivery is on its way, or even set your morning alarm based on your first calendar event the next day, all using natural language. There’s no need to navigate through complex controls anymore. And even more importantly, you can continue refining your shortcuts conversationally. If something doesn’t work exactly the way you want, you can simply describe the adjustment instead of manually rebuilding the automation yourself. That changes everything and makes it a tool anyone can understand and master. Apple is so confident about using AI in Shortcuts that the new interface for creating a shortcut starts by asking the user what they want to create, rather than showing all the available actions and an overwhelming series of menus. With the new Shortcuts, Apple Intelligence essentially becomes a translator between users and automations. Of course, if you still want to manually create your own shortcut, that option is still available. But starting with a draft generated by Apple Intelligence is definitely more effortless than starting from scratch. Shortcuts could be the killer Apple Intelligence app we’ve been waiting for.Apple iOS 27 brings AI where it matters most When it comes to Apple Intelligence features, some of them have always seemed a bit abstract. Sure, it’s always fun to watch demos of Genmoji and Image Playground, but these are features that most people will probably try once or twice and then forget they exist. With iOS 27, Apple seems to be finally implementing AI where it matters most, and the new Shortcuts app is a great example. Unlike many AI products, this feature doesn’t require users to completely change how they interact with their devices. People already describe tasks naturally in everyday language. Shortcuts simply turns those descriptions into functioning automations. Honestly, this feels like one of the first Apple Intelligence features that could fundamentally change how average users interact with iOS. This also applies to the new Siri AI, which understands what the user wants, rather than forcing you to use specific language to talk to the assistant. Apple isn’t just adding new AI features to iOS. It’s using Apple Intelligence to reduce the friction between users and more complex tasks. And if it works the way Apple claims, Shortcuts might finally stop being a niche tool and become something that many iPhone users will rely on every day. iOS 27 will be released this fall. For now, only a developer beta is available, with a public beta set to be released next month.

As Apple starts a new era, mine comes to an end
Macworld My first day on the job at Macworld, Apple was perilously close to going out of business. It was the fall of 1997, and Steve Jobs had returned to Apple and engineered the ejection of Gil Amelio as CEO, but there was no iMac yet, no visible turnaround in terms of products at all. Beyond the release of the iconic “Think Different” ad campaign, there was nothing. Apple’s survival hung by a thread. Steve Jobs asked everyone to trust him. At Macworld Expo, he had enlisted Bill Gates–Bill Gates, of all people!–to help him instill belief in the world that Apple would find a way to survive. The world was skeptical, to say the least. My family asked what job I thought I’d get once Apple went out of business. The magazine I had worked at for four years, MacUser, had folded, and some of us had been transferred over to our rival, Macworld, presumably to publish issues until Apple finally gave up the ghost and died. We existed to minimize the loss exposure of our respective publishing companies. 1997 was weird, folks. And that’s how my tenure at Macworld started. It got better Of course, in 1998, Apple announced and shipped the iMac, and its fortunes began to turn around. Mac OS X finally appeared in the early 2000s, and it is still the foundation of every device Apple makes. Somehow, Apple found a way to fashion a new Mac OS out of NeXTSTEP while maintaining enough Mac compatibility to keep users and software developers on the platform–a magic trick that I still don’t think gets enough credit in Apple’s turnaround. Covering Apple during the first decade of this century was like blasting off into space on a rocket. In a breathtakingly short amount of time, doom and gloom were replaced by a rain of improbable success stories, from the iPod to the revitalization of the Mac to the success of Apple retail stores to the really big one, the iPhone. Steve Jobs’s illness and death happened just as his utter triumph with the iPhone had become apparent. At the time, again, the consensus was that Apple was in deep trouble without its leader at the helm. And once again, those who were skeptical about the future of Apple were proven to be wrong. Really wrong. The Tim Cook era was–it feels a little weird to start using that in the past tense, but here we are–all about growth. Cook was never going to be Steve Jobs, and to his credit, he never tried to be. Cook’s successes are all about managing the unprecedented growth and success of Apple’s products, driven primarily by the incredible popularity of the iPhone. In hindsight, it was the perfect match of the man to the moment: Cook’s entire being seems focused on keeping the supply chain humming, innovating in manufacturing processes, and pressing the advantage with in-demand products. Cook led Apple through a period when it could’ve fumbled its opportunity with the iPhone, and there was no fumbling to be seen. The moment the iPhone really took off and went exponential was in September 2014, when the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus signaled Apple’s embrace of the larger phone styles that Samsung had proved were appealing to consumers. It’s also probably the moment Cook is most proud of, because it also marked the launch of the Apple Watch, the most consequential new product released during Cook’s tenure. The next chapter It seems like my own personal milestones tend to happen alongside Apple’s pivot points. I arrived at Macworld when Apple was lost, and I departed just as it zoomed further into the stratosphere. The day after Apple launched the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch was my last day as a full-time employee at Macworld. Fortunately, I had time to prepare, so I launched Six Colors, where I’ve been writing about Apple ever since. And Jon Phillips and the other excellent people at Macworld immediately asked me to come back and write More Color starting in early 2015. In my Macworld afterlife as a contributor, I’ve turned in nearly 500 columns over the last 11 years, extending the presence of my Macworld tenure to 29 years. We’re at a new pivot point now. And while I’ve spoken to Tim Cook a total of one time–I said hello at WWDC 2027 because he sat down right in front of me at the company’s live AI “tech talk”–I’ve talked to incoming CEO John Ternus a lot. He’s different from Cook in so many ways, and that’s a good thing. Apple has been incredibly successful for a long time, and when you’re that successful, it makes it easy to ignore organizational problems or blind spots, because why mess with a good thing? Ternus doesn’t need to use a wrecking ball on Apple, and he won’t, but he has the opportunity to survey how the company does business and make needed changes. He’s been at Apple for a quarter of a century, rising up in the hardware group over the years; surely, along the way, he’s noticed a lot of things that Apple could change and improve on. In fact, that brings up what makes me most enthusiastic about Ternus coming in as CEO. Tim Cook is a business-school guy who was recruited by Steve Jobs because Apple desperately needed someone who could create a disciplined supply chain and manufacturing organization. That wasn’t Jobs’s forte, so he made a great hire in Cook. But while Cook seems to have truly embraced Apple and what makes it special, he’s always been a high-level exec focused on specific areas of Apple’s business. Ternus isn’t like that. He’s a lifer at Apple. He came in at the ground level. He is one of us, at least in the sense that I think he viscerally understands what makes Apple’s products appeal to its customer base. He’s been closer to the nuts and bolts of what makes Apple work than Cook ever was. Having a CEO with that perspective will be good for Apple, at a time when the company seems to have conquered the world–but is now struggling to adapt to some rapid changes in the tech industry. I hate AI, but even I can’t wait to try these 10 features on my iPhone
Macworld As expected, Apple’s WWDC26 keynote presentation was heavily AI-themed. For those of us growing increasingly sick of the AI hype train this was a trying experience, with tech’s buzzword du jour crammed into every conceivable aspect of the OS updates. But it wasn’t all bad. In fact, there are several new functions coming to the iPhone this year which I’m genuinely excited about, showing that AI can be a force for good when companies focus on the output, not on the technology used to get there. Here are 10 iOS 27 features I can’t wait to try. 1. Change my passwords for me Password maintenance is as boring and laborious as it is necessary. Companies have got a lot better at notifying users when an account password has been compromised in a data breach, but when this happens it tends to happen en masse. Updating and keeping track of dozens of separate passwords is a task so daunting that I tend to put it off, thereby putting my data at risk. But in iOS 27, this will be done for you… by AI, inevitably. The Passwords app will alert you when it becomes aware of vulnerable login details (not just compromised passwords but those which are duplicates or otherwise weak) and then, crucially, offer to update them for you. Secure and convenient, as my colleague Alex Blake explains. Going through those 30 accounts by hand would take half the afternoon.Apple 2. Pass me useful info when I’m on a call It can be a real pain when dealing with a company or call center, trying to wrangle relevant information stored on the same phone you’re currently using to speak to them. They’ll ask for your account ID or ticket number, and you’ll have to rummage through various apps to track this down while awkwardly keeping the conversation going. iOS 27 promises to make this experience easier thanks to a new feature called Call Context. It uses AI to predict information you’ll need based on who you’re talking to. So if you call an airline, it will surface the relevant flight confirmation from Mail, for example. 3. Make Safari sound more human In the past, Apple has given us some choice about the way Siri sounds, but nothing like this. In iOS 27, assuming you have a sufficiently powerful iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, or later, users can customise Siri’s voice using two independent sliders: one adjusts speed, the other expressiveness. And it’s impressive how human it can be made to sound. @macworld.com The new Siri AI voice is almost TOO good #apple #ios27 ♬ original sound – Macworld – Macworld This isn’t just a cosmetic change. Siri’s droning, pompous voice is a major source of annoyance when delivering error messages, so a more human and less irritating level of expressivity can only improve the user experience. That might be worth upgrading to an iPhone 18 Pro in the fall. 4. Let me control my kids’ browsing more easily iOS already has decent parental controls, but these can be quite clumsy to administer. I use a whitelist and block all other websites by default, so anytime my kids need to browse a new site for homework, I have to go into their settings and add it to the list manually. The new Ask to Browse feature allows them to request permission remotely in the same way they can request 15 more minutes on an app; parents can check out the site, then approve if they feel it’s appropriate. 5. Give me a different volume for alarms Sometimes you need a loud alarm but don’t want the other system sounds to be quite so attention-grabbing. Fortunately, in iOS 27, the volume of your alarms can be adjusted independently. In the Sounds & Haptics section of Settings, you’ll find toggles that let you detach the volume of alarms, timers, and so on from the general ringtone volume, and then adjust their volume to suit. OK, maybe this isn’t actual AI, but I don’t care. It’s overdue. 6. Resend my failed messages Not all of the changes in iOS 27 were fully explored in the presentation. This obnoxious slide lists 263 otherwise unmentioned small improvements across Apple’s ecosystem, and several stand out. The one that I’m most pleased to see (number 110) is “Failed messages automatically retry sending.” Small changes are sometimes the most important. That’s a lot of changes.Apple 7. Limit my shared albums Number 113 on that list is another interesting one: “Expire your Shared Albums.” This means you’ll be able to create a shared photo album with a group of friends, but set an expiration time so it doesn’t last forever. Useful when you create an album for a specific event or holiday but don’t want it clogging up your Photos collections afterwards. 8. Organise my tabs in a smarter way Safari is getting some nice changes this year. Apple focused on how this will affect Mac users, but Safari on iPhone also gets two valuable updates. The first is a new AI-powered tab organization tool that will group tabs by topic rather than website/domain. This will make it much easier to keep track of all the stuff we’ve been browsing. If you don’t like the sound of that, don’t worry: it’s optional. 9. Keep tabs on websites for me Automated tab wrangling is useful, but Safari’s new Notify Me feature is a game-changer. It lets you build custom alerts for specific changes to specific websites: when a price drops, for example, or tickets go on sale, you’ll receive a notification. No longer will you have to spend all day refreshing the website and going mad. Again, this feature has mostly been aimed at Mac fans, but it’s coming to iPhone too. 10. Intelligently monitor my security cameras If you own security cameras that are compatible with HomeKit, iOS 27 will be a godsend. Apple Intelligence will make the Home app’s camera management far more sophisticated because it can analyse the imagery and ‘understand’ what it’s seeing. Related notifications will be grouped together; noteworthy clips will be highlighted; and the app will be able to generate descriptions of the video captured by your cameras.
