'Apple Tax is Dead in the USA'
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has almost entirely upheld a scathing April ruling that found Apple in willful violation of a 2021 injunction meant to open up iOS App Store payments in its long-running legal battle against Epic Games. A three-judge panel affirmed that Apple's 27% fee for developers using outside payment options had a "prohibitive effect" and that the company's design restrictions on external payment links were overly broad. The appeals court also agreed that Apple acted in "bad faith" by rejecting viable, compliant alternatives in internal discussions. One divergence from the lower court: the appeals court ruled that Apple should still be able to charge a "reasonable fee" based on its actual costs to ensure user security and privacy, rather than charging nothing at all. What qualifies as "reasonable" remains to be determined. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney told reporters he believes those fees should be "super super minor," on the order of "tens or hundreds of dollars" every time an iOS app update goes through Apple for review. "The Apple Tax is dead in the USA," he wrote on social media. Sweeney also alleged that a widespread "fear of retaliation" has kept many developers paying Apple's default 30% fees, claiming the company can effectively "ghost" apps by delaying reviews or burying them in search results. Leak reveals details of Apple’s secret roadmap: iOS 26.4, iOS 27, and iOS 28
Macworld All throughout this week, Macworld has been covering discoveries related to Apple’s future plans found in a leaked internal build of iOS 26. After reporting on new devices such as AirTag 2, HomePad, and a new generation of Studio Display, we also saw details about future software such as iOS 26.4 and even iOS 27. The build in question is used internally by engineers to test new, unreleased software features. Although it’s an iOS 26.0 build, it also includes several “flags” that reference features Apple has been planning to release far in the future. A “feature flag” is how Apple identifies features in its iOS code. Engineers can enable and disable flags to turn specific features on and off while they are being developed. They also contain notes about when a particular feature is expected to be ready for a public version of iOS. Read on as we detail what users can expect from future iOS updates based on what we’ve discovered. Refreshed Health app The internal build of iOS 26 seen by Macworld contains multiple feature flags related to major updates coming to the Health app. This includes references to a new layout for categories and simplified metric logging. Apple is rumored to be introducing a new “Health+” subscription next year. A recent Bloomberg report revealed that, as part of the Health app subscription, users will have access to a new AI assistant to answer questions based on health data stored in the app. The redesign of the Health app will likely pave the way for this new paid platform. Credit card autofill for third-party apps Apple is testing a system that detects when a card is added inside a third-party app and then offers to save it to iCloud Keychain. The feature would work in pretty much the same way as Autofill in Safari. Of course, apps will also be able to provide easier access to credit cards stored in iCloud with Autofill. The feature is also set to be released with iOS 26.4 next year, based on code references. Apple is slowly building its Freeform app into a real productivity tool.Apple Folders in Freeform A long-overdue organization feature: the code shows a full folder system coming to Freeform boards, likely syncing through iCloud. Apple has been expanding Freeform quietly, and this is a sign they’re preparing it to behave more like a true productivity app. Users can expect folders in Freeform with iOS 26.4. Sports ‘tier’ for Apple TV Details are unclear, but there’s a new “Sports Tier” feature flag for the Apple TV app. With Apple investing more and more in sports content for its streaming platform, it would not be surprising if the company ended up announcing a more expensive subscription tier for sports fans. The feature is also being targeted for spring 2026, likely with iOS 26.4. Extra security layers Apple has also been exploring adding extra layers of security to its devices with iOS 26.4. One of the feature flags seen in the leaked code hints at a new validation system that will check the integrity of the device before logging into Apple ID and iCloud. This will potentially prevent users from logging into Apple’s online services if the device has undergone any unauthorized modifications, such as jailbreaking. New Siri with Apple Intelligence As previously reported by Macworld, the new Siri with Apple Intelligence is on track to launch with iOS 26.4 in spring 2026. Users will be able to have more natural conversations with the assistant, which is expected to be integrated with a large language model based on Google Gemini. AirPods may be getting a new Find My feature next year.Andreas Bergsman AirPods features The leaked code suggests new features coming to AirPods. This includes a capability called “Precise Outdoor Location” to pinpoint the earbuds’ location in the Find My app. Given that the AirPods Pro 3 introduced this year feature an upgraded ultra-wideband chip (U2), it’s reasonable to assume this feature will be exclusive to the newest model. Clues about what’s coming in iOS 27 and iOS 28 In addition to features planned for iOS 26.4, the leaked build also includes references to a few features being developed for iOS 27 and even iOS 28. There are new feature flags tied to improved collections in the Photos app with iOS 27. The update will also introduce a new pairing system for AirPods. It’s unclear how this system will work, given that the current method is already quite simple, but presumably it involves under-the-hood improvements to make pairing even faster and more reliable. For iOS 28, the company plans to add new metrics to sleep tracking with Apple Watch, including time in bed. There’s also a flag that indicates the Health app is coming to the Mac with macOS 28. The big picture While none of these features are guaranteed to ship, Apple’s internal code often reveals the company’s priorities long before public releases. iOS 26.4 is shaping up to be a surprisingly ambitious mid-cycle update, and Apple is clearly laying groundwork for much bigger changes in iOS 27 and iOS 28. As development continues, we expect even more clues to surface, and we’ll keep digging.

One power bank even has a fancy light that might brighten up a cloudy day. GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology makes transistors smaller and therefore devices such as chargers more diminutive. This is now putting quite serious functionality into very small things indeed. And we’ve never seen a power bank as small as the Rolling Square Tau 2, which wants to be the key ring that saves you just as your iPhone’s battery gives up the ghost of the sub-10% you are shocked to realize never got a charge up before you left the house. Where most power banks are bulky—although the latest 5K magnetic power banks are positively skeletal—the Tau 2 is smaller than an AirPods case but hosts a 2000mAh (7.4Wh) battery pack that in our tests refilled an iPhone 16 Pro by just over 30%. We review the best magnetic power banks if you are willing to sacrifice some bulk for greater battery capacity. Simon Jary In size it measures 2.2 x 1.7 x 0.7 inches (5.6 x 4.3 x 1.9cm). It’s a little smaller and lighter (1.7oz vs2.2oz; 49 vs 61g) than an AirPods Pro case. The clever thing about the Tau 2 is that it doesn’t require you to always have a cable on you when you’re out and about—how many people do? If you’re canny enough to pack a cable every time you go out, you should be bright enough to have remembered to charge your phone in the first place. Most of us sometimes fail on both counts. Remove the key-friendly hooked lid to reveal two cables: a USB-C for anything new (iPhone 15 and later) and Lightning for older iPhones and AirPods cases. Simon Jary The Lightning cable even works as MicroUSB—the fiddly little connector that history should have consigned to the dustbin, but which doggedly lives on in cheap Chinese gadgets. If you do still own an iPhone older than the 15, it will offer pass-through charging with USB-C as input and Lightning as output. You can even charge two devices at the same time, which is where a second USB-C cable rather than Lightning could be useful to early adopters. If you have all USB-C Apple gadgets the Lightning cable is rather superfluous. We’d have preferred an option with two USB-C so the pass-through can go both ways, but I do own an older Lightning AirPods case, so it is still useful to me. If only it could charge my Apple Watch too. Maker Rolling Square promises that “you’ll never forget to re-charge it”, which of course is nonsense, but the company does give you options. You can plug in straight into a USB-C charger using its little cable, or power it up via its own its Charging Dock that—with the included double-sided adhesive—can be firmly stuck to a wall, desk, or any clean, flat surface that will hold it. You can also plug it straight into one of your MacBook’s Thunderbolt ports to charge it up from the laptop. Simon Jary If you keep your keys on a hook, just attach the Tau 2’s charging dock right next to it. I’m happy with my AirTag keyring and could connect the Tau 2 to that but prefer to keep the tiny power bank in a pocket in my backpack for emergencies—but you can follow Rolling Square’s recommendation and use it as your main key ring if you fancy. The hook is secure, although not as gripping a fix as an old-fashioned metal ring. The Tau 2 does work with an NFC tag to create a Lost Mode, as well as potentially share your Digital ID via the same route, but to fit better into the Apple ecosystem a FindMy function would be appreciated. I am happy to carry around a slim magnetic power bank in my backpack, and most of the time I remember to keep it charged ready for when my iPhone gives out miles away from a wall charger. But I am sometimes caught out and have to limp around in Low Power Mode on a few percentage points of battery life. The tiny Tau 2 is a great and affordable back-up battery that can squeeze out enough juice to recharge the iPhone to nearly a third of its full potential while weighing next to nothing and taking up barely any space.

There are mobile hotspots that have a more portable design, but these are quite expensive and are primarily designed for business travellers who need to use mobile broadband when they’re on the road. The BE3600 Wi-Fi 7 Travel Router (model number TL-WR3602BE) from TP-Link is something of an odd man out, as it sits somewhere between these two types of devices. It’s a little more expensive than a conventional router that provides similar Wi-Fi performance, but its portable design and versatile connectivity features will earn their keep when you’re away from home or your office. The Travel Router’s portable design makes it easy to carry with you when you leave home or your office. TP-Link At first glance, the Travel Router does look like a conventional router, consisting of a simple rectangular case with two antennae at the back to transmit the Wi-Fi signal. It’s much smaller than an ordinary router though, and the antennae can be folded flat to reduce the size to just 36mm high, 126mm wide and 93.5mm deep. It’s not quite pocket-size but you can easily slip it into a backpack or briefcase alongside your laptop when you’re travelling. The Travel Router packs a lot into that compact design, though. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi 7, running on the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz frequency bands, with a top speed of 3.6Gbps. It doesn’t support the faster 6.0GHz band that is available with Wi-Fi 7 or 6E, but it will be more than adequate for use with most home or office broadband services, or for a spot of email and web browsing when you’re on the road. Admittedly, Apple has been a bit slow in adopting Wi-Fi 7 – even the latest M5 MacBook Pro models are still using Wi-Fi 6E – so if your Apple devices are mostly using Wi-Fi 5 or 6 then there is a less expensive version of the Travel Router that uses Wi-Fi 6 and costs just $99.99/£89.99. The Travel Router can work in a number of different modes, depending on how to want to connect it to the Internet. There’s a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port on the back of the router – with Ethernet cable included – that allows you to connect it to your normal broadband router at home, or perhaps to an Ethernet port in a hotel room, vacation apartment, or conference centre when you’re travelling, which will result in a better connection than joining the local Wi-Fi. There’s a Gigabit Ethernet port as well, to provide a wired connection for a Mac or PC. If there’s no wired network available then you can also connect the Travel Router to an existing Wi-Fi network, such as the public Wi-Fi in a hotel or airport lounge, and then use it to create a separate private network that has its own password to keep your devices secure. Mulitple ports on the back of the Travel Router allow you to connect to the Internet using wi-fi, Ethernet or USB tethering. TP-Link If there’s no Wi-Fi or Ethernet network available then you can use the USB-A (3.0) port on the back of the Travel Router to connect – or ‘tether’ – it to an iPhone or other mobile device so that it can use your mobile broadband to set up a private network that you can share with friends, family or colleagues. This USB-A port has another use as well – one that will particularly appeal to business users. If you’re using Ethernet or Wi-Fi to connect the Travel Router to an existing network, then you can use the USB-A port to connect an external hard drive or solid-state drive, and share it on your own network like a kind of portable NAS drive. There’s a USB-C port on the back panel as well although, somewhat oddly, this can only be used to power the Travel Router. There’s a mains power adaptor in the box – with U.S., U.K. and E.U. plugs also included – but you can also power the Travel Router with a portable battery pack or even from a USB port on a laptop. Using a laptop will drain the laptop’s battery of course, but it’s a useful option to have in an emergency, and we had no problems using our MacBook Pro to power the Travel Router. Getting started is very straightforward, thanks to TP-Link’s well-designed Tether app. The app allows you simply scan a QR code on the base of the Travel Router to automatically connect to its Wi-Fi network, and then asks whether you want to use Ethernet, Wi-Fi or USB to connect to the Internet. You also have the choice of using the default name and password for the Travel Router’s network – which are printed on the base of the router, and therefore not very secure – or you can create your own name and password for extra security. The app provides some other useful features too, such as an Eco mode that lets you adjust the speed and range of the Travel Router in order to reduce power consumption – which will be handy if you’re powering it from your laptop. The TP-Link app makes it easy to set up and use the Travel Router. TP-Link.com The performance of the Travel Router will vary, depending on the speed and type of network that it’s connected to, but it ran well when connected via Ethernet to our office network. It provided consistent speeds of 100Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, and a very healthy 750Mbps on the 5.0GHz band. Those speeds aren’t going to break any records, but they do match some of the more conventional dual-band routers that we’ve seen recently, so you’re not sacrificing any performance by opting for the more portable design of the Travel Router. Next year's Apple Watch lineup will not include any major design changes, with a redesign not expected before 2028, according to the leaker Instant Digital. In a Weibo post in Chinese (machine translated), the leaker said Apple's watch 2026 lineup would not look significantly different, and suggested Apple would not reveal a new design until the year after the release of its 20th anniversary iPhone, expected in late 2027. The claim puts a dampener on expectations that Apple is readying a major Apple Watch redesign next year. In August, DigiTimes reported that at least one new model launching in 2026 would have "significant" changes to its exterior design that would be related to new sensors. This led to speculation that the changes could be linked to Apple's development of noninvasive blood glucose monitoring technology, but the Apple Watch feature is still believed to be a few years away while Apple works on further miniaturization. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported long ago on the possibility of a redesigned Apple Watch with a thinner case and a magnetic band system. While the Apple Watch Series 10 debuted a thinner case, no magnetic band has materialized, and there were no additional design changes in the Series 11 released earlier this year. Leaked Apple code has suggested the company is experimenting with biometric authentication in the form of Touch ID for 2026's Apple Watch lineup, but it's possible that could be an under-screen implementation which doesn't change the watch's outward appearance. The free Apple Sports app on the iPhone was released in additional European countries today, including Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Hungary, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Greece, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Ukraine, and others. The app was already available in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Launched in February 2024, the Apple Sports app shows scores, stats, standings, upcoming games, and more for a variety of leagues. Today's update, which brings the app to version 3.5, is rolling out now in the App Store. A few months ago, Apple Sports was updated with a few improvements, including the addition of a Home Screen widget and the ability to schedule Live Activities for upcoming events. X has launched Chat, an end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) replacement for its existing direct messaging service. Chat is rolling out on iOS now via the X app, and it includes support for video and voice calls, disappearing messages, and file sharing, as well as the ability to edit and delete previously sent messages. Any old messages should be carried across to Chat from the old DM system on X (formerly Twitter). Users also have options to block screenshots and get notified of attempts to take them. However, it's worth noting that the E2EE support doesn't encrypt message metadata, and this can include information about the sender as well as the recipient. X also says that its system lacks safeguards against man-in-the-middle attacks, meaning an encrypted chat could be intercepted without either participant realizing it. So a determined insider or even X itself, acting under legal obligation, could theoretically access a conversation without triggering any warning to the sender or recipient. The company added that it is developing tools to let users confirm the integrity of their encrypted exchanges. X has been previewing its new chat tools for months, launching an early version of encrypted messaging earlier this year before pausing it in May to resolve undisclosed issues. A voice memo feature for users to exchange audio messages is currently being developed, and an Android version is apparently coming soon. Apple Exploring Touch-Sensitive Layers Built Into Official iPhone Cases
Apple is developing official iPhone cases that act like secondary touch interfaces for future devices, claims a new rumor out of China. According to known Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital, Apple is looking to make protective cases for its Pro models that directly integrate touch-based sensor layers. The leaker provided no further details, but there are some clues to be found in previous research conducted by Apple. A patent application filed by the company in 2024 describes a "case with input for an electronic device" and outlines a protective iPhone case designed to act as an input surface rather than passive shielding. The document describes touch-sensitive areas embedded in the case – using capacitive or pressure-based sensors – that can trigger actions typically handled by the phone's physical buttons. When the case is attached, the iPhone detects it and reroutes button behavior so that taps, presses, or sliding gestures on the case activate system functions. The patent also details how the case communicates with the device, including identification and signal transfer through interfaces such as NFC. Some versions also include provisions for biometric input, allowing a Touch ID fingerprint sensor in the case to unlock features on the phone, for example. The filing shows Apple has already explored treating the case as an extension of the iPhone's controls. What makes the idea more timely however is Apple's rumored work on a bezel-free iPhone. Apple is said to be pursuing a radical redesign for its 20th anniversary iPhone, with a display that curves around all four edges of the device. This approach could leave almost no room for mechanical buttons. Indeed, there have been reports that Apple may shift to solid-state, capacitive layers on the anniversary model, enabling a visually uninterrupted design that could make an interactive case a natural companion. A case with integrated touch zones could relocate things like volume changes and camera control to larger, more ergonomic surfaces, while reducing accidental edge input on an all-screen design. In effect, the case could supply the tactile cues and grip-based controls that would otherwise be obstructed by a normal case on a bezel-free, button-light iPhone. Whether Apple's work on interactive iPhone cases is related to its anniversary model is of course speculation at this point, but the convergence of rumors provides another intriguing set of possibilities for the device, which is expected to launch in the fall of 2027. Apple Health+ will also feature an AI-based health coach that offers nutrition planning and medical suggestions, according to Gurman's previous reporting. Apple Fitness+ launched in 2020. This is easily the biggest news for the regular version of CarPlay in years, should Tesla actually follow through with offering the system in its vehicles. As noted by Gurman, this would be a stunning reversal for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, who have long ignored customer requests to implement CarPlay. We shall see what ultimately happens, though. Musk could change his mind at any moment. Tesla plans to offer the regular, wireless version of CarPlay, rather than the more advanced CarPlay Ultra system, according to Gurman. Apple is working on a high-end M5 Ultra chip, but Gurman said the company is currently "only" focused on a new Mac Studio with that chip, which leads him to believe that the Mac Pro "won't be updated in 2026 in a significant way." It sounds like Gurman has not heard anything about a Mac Pro with an M5 Ultra chip being in the works, but he has not entirely ruled out the possibility. In recent years, the Mac Pro has become redundant for many customers, as it is essentially a larger and more expensive Mac Studio with PCIe expansion slots. Apple is preparing for Tim Cook to step down as CEO of the company "as soon as next year," according to the Financial Times. The company's board of directors and senior executives "recently intensified preparations for Cook to hand over the reins," the report said. While the report said that Apple is unlikely to name a new CEO before its next earnings report in late January, it went on to explain that an announcement early in the year would allow for a smooth leadership transition, ahead of Apple's annual developers conference WWDC in June and iPhone event in September. No final decisions have been made, and the timing could change, the report said. Cook has been Apple's CEO since August 2011. He turned 65 this year, which is a common age for retirement in the United States, but he has yet to publicly announce any plans to step down. Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, is widely viewed as Cook's most likely successor when the time comes. Ternus joined Apple in 2001. At 50, he is one of Apple's younger senior executives, so he could potentially have a lengthy run as CEO. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman pushed back on the report. "I don't get the sense anything is imminent as the [Financial Times] is claiming," he said, in a post today. In any case, the report said Apple's succession plans are not related to the company's current performance. Apple reported record revenue in the September quarter, and the company expects the current December quarter to be the best quarter in the company's history. Apple executive Jeff Williams has retired, after working at the company for more than 25 years. Apple removed Williams from its leadership page on Friday, which was his final day, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Williams joined Apple in 1998, and was promoted to Chief Operations Officer (COO) in 2015. He held the role until July of this year, when he was succeeded by Sabih Khan, who was previously Apple's Senior Vice President of Operations. As part of a planned transition, Williams remained at Apple as Senior Vice President of Design, Watch, and Health until this Friday. For a decade, Williams oversaw Apple's entire worldwide operations, as well as customer service and support. He also led Apple Watch engineering and health initiatives at the company, and he took over Apple's design team in 2023. Williams was one of the top executives at Apple, so his departure is very notable. At one point, he was even considered a potential candidate for CEO. Here is what Williams said about his retirement plans back in July:I have a deep love for Apple. Working with all of the amazing people at this company has been a privilege of a lifetime, and I can't thank Tim enough for the opportunity, his inspirational leadership, and our friendship over the years. A U.S. federal jury has ruled that Apple owes medical technology company Masimo $634 million for patent infringement related to the blood oxygen-sensing technology in the Apple Watch, reports Reuters. Apple will appeal the verdict. "We are pleased by this outcome, and appreciate the time and attention given to our case by the court and the jury," said Masimo in a press release." This is a significant win in our ongoing efforts to protect our innovations and intellectual property, which is crucial to our ability to develop technology that benefits patients. We remain committed to defending our IP rights moving forward." "Over the past six years (Masimo has) sued Apple in multiple courts and asserted over 25 patents, the majority of which have been found to be invalid," an Apple spokesperson told Reuters. "The single patent in this case expired in 2022, and is specific to historic patient monitoring technology from decades ago." The patent dispute led to a ban on U.S. sales of Apple Watch with the blood oxygen feature in December 2023. Apple was able to temporarily continue selling the Apple Watch models while an interim stay was in place during an appeal, but the ban was reinstated as of January 18, 2024, and Apple addressed the issue by immediately launching sales of models with the feature disabled in software. Apple Watch models in the U.S. remained unable to support blood oxygen monitoring for over a year and a half before Apple introduced a workaround in August 2025 with blood oxygen data being processed and displayed on a paired iPhone rather than on the Apple Watch itself, a change that satisfied U.S. Customs regulators that had been charged with enforcing the original ban. This week also saw the fifth anniversary of the very successful Apple silicon effort on the Mac, contrasted with the future of the iPhone Air seeming shakier than ever. On the software side, Apple made some more tweaks with the second beta of iOS 26.2 and released the Digital ID feature to allow users to add their U.S. passports to the Wallet app, so read on below for all the details! Top Stories Five Years of Apple Silicon: M1 to M5 Performance Comparison This week marked the fifth anniversary of the Apple silicon chip that replaced Intel chips in Apple's Mac lineup. The first Apple silicon chip, the M1, was unveiled on November 10, 2020, and it debuted in the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and 13-inch MacBook Pro. The ‌M1‌ chip was impressive when it launched, featuring the "world's fastest CPU core" and industry-leading performance per watt, and it's only improved since then. We've had five total generations of Apple silicon chips, with the M5 unveiled in the 14-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ just last month, so check out our look at how Apple's latest M-series chip compares to the first one. Apple Debuts iPhone Pocket, a Limited Edition iPod Sock-Style Accessory While Apple branched out into the crossbody strap accessory market with the iPhone 17 lineup, the company has now gone a step further with the release of the special-edition iPhone Pocket, a knitted accessory much like a stretchy pocket or sock that can hold an iPhone, AirPods, or other everyday items. Apple has not necessarily canceled the second-generation iPhone Air, but the company is reportedly looking at ways to improve it such as by adding a second rear camera to try to improve its appeal, and a revamped version could appear in Spring 2027 alongside the regular iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e as Apple moves to split up its flagship iPhone launches across the year. Another report this week claims that the iPhone 16e has similarly "failed" at its $599 price point that marked a significant increase compared to its iPhone SE predecessor, though there have been no reports of a potential delay beyond the rumored Spring 2026 time frame for a follow-up iPhone 17e model. New HomePod Mini, Apple TV, and AirTag Were Expected This Year — Where Are They? Rumors of updates for the HomePod mini, Apple TV, and AirTag have regularly pointed toward the middle or end of 2025, but it's looking less and less likely to happen as the time ticks down. While HomePod mini stock in particular is running low at many third-party retailers, the holiday shopping season is already kicking into high gear with Apple even featuring the current model among its top gift ideas. Delayed releases for HomePod mini and Apple TV updates could be tied to ongoing delays with Apple's revamped Siri that will drive an expansion of the company's smart home platform with new hardware such as a home hub device and cameras, but it's unclear what might be holding up the release of a second-generation AirTag with greater range and other improvements. Everything New in iOS 26.2 Beta 2 Apple this week provided developers with the second beta of iOS 26.2, which adds a few new features worth knowing about. Changes since the first beta include a new Liquid Glass look for the Measure app, an option to turn off pinned conversations in the Messages app when in CarPlay, improvements to animations and the Games app, and more. Apple Launches U.S. Passport Feature on iPhone Apple has announced that iPhone users can now create a Digital ID in the Apple Wallet app based on information from their U.S. passport. The Digital ID can be used for domestic air travel at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports, and in the future it will be able to provide identity and age verification at select stores, in compatible apps, and on supported websites. The Digital ID does not, however, fully replace a physical passport, as it can not be used for international travel and border crossing purposes. Apple's 2026 Mac Plans
Most of Apple's Macs are slated to get M5 chips across 2026, and there's a possibility we'll even see the first M6 chips toward the end of the year. Updates are planned for everything from the MacBook Air to the Mac Studio. MacBook Air (Early 2026) The ‌MacBook Air‌ will be one of the first Macs to get a 2026 refresh, with an update planned for the first few months of the year. The ‌MacBook Air‌ will get the same M5 chip that Apple introduced with the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Apple might also add the same SSD upgrades that it included in the M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌. Low-Cost MacBook (Early 2026) Apple is going to release a low-cost MacBook in 2026 that's cheaper than the $999 ‌MacBook Air‌. The low-cost MacBook will have a display that's around 13 inches in size, so it could be slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch ‌MacBook Air‌. Apple is planning to use its A18 Pro chip in the MacBook. We first saw the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro models. The chip is built on Apple's second-generation 3-nanometer process, featuring 8GB RAM and support for Apple Intelligence. The low-cost MacBook will have a standard LCD display with no mini-LED technology or ProMotion refresh rate. It could come in bright colors like the iMac, with Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting Apple will offer it in silver, blue, pink, and yellow. The low-cost MacBook won't replace the ‌MacBook Air‌, and will instead join the Mac lineup as a new affordable option. Apple is expected to debut the low-cost MacBook in the first half of 2026. MacBook Pro (Early 2026) Apple already introduced the 14-inch M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌, but higher-end models with faster M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are expected around the same timeframe as the ‌MacBook Air‌ and low-cost MacBook. The M5 Pro and M5 Max will have more CPU cores and better GPUs for improved performance, with the chips available in both 14-inch and 16-inch machines. Apple is also expected to add faster SSDs. Mac Displays (Early to Mid-2026) Apple hasn't released a new display since the Studio Display launched in 2022, but there are apparently two new models that are in development and slated for release in 2026. The next-generation version of the Studio Display could feature the same 27-inch screen size, but with mini-LED technology instead of LCD. mini-LED means better HDR, brightness, contrast, and colors. The current Studio Display has an A-series chip inside, and the next-generation version could get the A19 Pro that Apple used in the iPhone 17 Pro. There are actually two displays in development, but it's unclear if that's the next Studio Display in two sizes, or a Studio Display and a more expensive Pro Display XDR successor. It's also possible Apple designed two Studio Displays and will only launch one model. Mac mini (Mid-2026) An updated version of the Mac mini could come out sometime around mid-2026, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The ‌Mac mini‌ will get M5 and M5 Pro chips, but there are no design changes rumored as of now. Mac Studio (Mid-2026) The ‌Mac Studio‌ could come out during the same timeframe as the ‌Mac mini‌. Apple didn't release an M4 Ultra chip so there was never an M4 Ultra ‌Mac Studio‌, but there will be an M5 Ultra model. Sometime around the middle of 2026, the ‌Mac Studio‌ will get M5 Max and M5 Ultra chip technology. The M5 Max will offer much faster CPU and GPU performance than the M5, and the M5 Ultra will double the M5 Max. We haven't heard any other rumors about the ‌Mac Studio‌, so it may only get internal updates. OLED MacBook Pro (Late 2026) While there's an M5 Pro and M5 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌ refresh planned for early 2026, there's another update in the works. Apple is developing a revamped OLED ‌MacBook Pro‌ that uses next-generation M6 chip technology and also features a touch screen. It's not yet clear if the machine will come out in late 2026 or early 2027, but 2026 remains a possibility. If Apple does debut the OLED ‌MacBook Pro‌ in 2026, it will be a year with two ‌MacBook Pro‌ refreshes. Apple has done that once before in 2023, but it is rare. Rumors suggest that the OLED ‌MacBook Pro‌ will feature a hole-punch camera without a notch, maximizing the available display area. Touch integration will be added to the Mac's screen for the first time, and Apple plans to adopt a reinforced hinge that stays stationary when the display is touched. The design of the MacBook will also be updated, and it will have a thinner, lighter chassis. There will be a keyboard and trackpad as usual, with the touch gestures augmenting existing functionality. The M6 could be built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, introducing speed and efficiency improvements for impressive gains in battery life without compromising power. The OLED ‌MacBook Pro‌ could also be the first MacBook to incorporate 5G connectivity, with Apple including a C2 chip in the device. The C2 chip is Apple's rumored second-generation in-house modem that will support mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G speeds. Mac Pro (Timing Unknown) Apple is probably going to release a new Mac Pro at some point, but it's unclear when. Bloomberg originally said a ‌Mac Pro‌ would come before the end of 2025 with some kind of M4 chip, but that didn't happen, so now 2026 or later is the only option. It's possible the ‌Mac Pro‌ will get a refresh with the M5 Ultra chip when the ‌Mac Studio‌ does, but we haven't heard confirmation of that. The next ‌Mac Pro‌ will get Thunderbolt 5, and it will likely support at least 512GB RAM and 16TB storage, because that's what the M3 Ultra chip supports. iMac (Timing and Status Unknown) The ‌iMac‌ is expected to get an M5 update in 2026, but timing isn't clear. We haven't heard anything about the ‌iMac‌ in some time, and there are no rumors of design changes or major updates on the horizon. There have been nebulous rumors of an ‌iMac‌ with a larger display, but there's no sign that such a Mac is still in active development.
