20 years ago, the first MacBook Pro changed the world. Will history repeat itself?
Macworld Anyone looking for a new computer these days would be wise to check out the MacBook Pro. It’s easily one of the best laptops in the world and combines power and portability in ways that most of its rivals can only hope to match. But how did Apple’s flagship laptop get here? This week marks the 20th anniversary of the first-ever MacBook Pro, giving us a great opportunity to look back at where the device came from and where it could be headed in the future. Here are five of the most important MacBook Pro models we’ve seen so far, and all the ways they have changed the world of computing forever. MacBook Pro debut (2006) Prior to 2006, Apple’s laptops had hit something of a dead end. They used PowerPC chips that had powered the Mac for years, but Apple was struggling to eke any more performance out of them without ramping up power consumption. That was a problem with laptops that could quickly get warm. Enter Intel processors. These days, we might look at Intel chips as terribly inefficient compared to Apple silicon, but back in the mid-2000s, they were a (figuratively) hot property. Apple decided to make the switch, and at the same time, decided to ditch the PowerBook branding entirely and replace it with the MacBook Pro. At WWDC 2005, Intel CEO Paul Otellini (right) joined Steve Jobs at the keynote address to announce Apple’s switch to Intel processors.Foundry As Steve Jobs explained on stage when he unveiled the MacBook Pro for the first time, Intel chips didn’t just give better overall performance, they gave better performance per watt, up to 4.5 times better than the PowerPC G5 that came before. All that meant that Apple could finally do what it wanted to do with its pro-level laptops. The resulting MacBook Pro was packed with an Intel Core Duo chip, was made thinner than the PowerBook, came with a built-in iSight camera for video calls, and introduced the world to the much-loved MagSafe connector. It was a major overhaul of Apple’s laptop lineup, and such a significant one that the MacBook Pro name is still going strong today. All-in-one unibody (2008) Before 2008, the MacBook Pro’s chassis was made from several different components, including an internal frame, a top palm rest, several joining and strengthening elements, and more. That was acceptable enough, but Apple wanted something that was stronger and would help the device last longer. To do that, it had to rethink how it made its MacBooks, and the result was the advent of the unibody design. This change meant that instead of being built from several pieces that were fitted together, the MacBook Pro’s body was now milled from a single piece of aluminum that was whittled down until it was the right shape. Internal components were then fitted inside this enclosure, completing the device. As a result, the MacBook Pro became far, far stronger while also being much lighter. While the 2008 MacBook Air had used a unibody palm rest, that year’s MacBook Pro was the first Apple laptop to be entirely constructed in this way. It’s a blueprint that MacBooks of all stripes have followed ever since. The 2008 MacBook Pro wasn’t just about its unibody design. It also came with powerful Nvidia graphics options, a larger trackpad with multi-touch and support for clicking anywhere on its surface, and a bright LED display that was an impressively slim part of the device. But while it was less showy than any of these elements, the unibody chassis has had just as much of an impact, strengthening and simplifying the laptop’s case in the almost 20 years since. Retina display (2012) The Retina display first appeared in 2010 in the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch, but didn’t make its way to the MacBook Pro until two years later. In 2012, Apple was ready to lift the lid on a new pro-level laptop featuring the display tech that everyone was talking about. With a Retina display in effect, the pixels on the MacBook Pro’s screen were too small to discern from a normal viewing distance. That helped to sharpen up everything you viewed on your device, giving a sense of crispness and quality that was lacking before. Elsewhere, the 2012 MacBook Pro was significant for a wealth of other reasons. Its chassis was 25 percent thinner than its predecessor, it came with SSD storage as standard, it dropped the optical drive and FireWire 800 and ushered in HDMI, USB 3.0, and MagSafe 2, while the number of Thunderbolt ports also increased. At the same time, Apple took many steps to make the MacBook Pro much harder to access and repair its internals. The battery and memory were glued in place, and while the SSD was not fixed this way, it used a proprietary connector and form factor that made replacement difficult. Apple also started using proprietary pentalobe screws more extensively, and these were not compatible with standard tools. While Apple has started to ease up on this kind of behavior in recent years, it’s a pattern that still hasn’t completely gone away. Touch Bar (2016) Think back to the most controversial design decisions that Apple has made over the years. There have been plenty, but the 2016 MacBook Pro got not one but two of them in the form of the butterfly keyboard and the Touch Bar. The butterfly keyboard cut key travel down to the barest minimum. While this probably helped to free up more internal space for other components, it resulted in an unresponsive, unsatisfying typing feel with keys that were prone to getting stuck and jammed. To its detractors, the butterfly keyboard was a prime example of Apple pursuing its ideal of thin and light at the expense of practicality. Apple dropped the Touch Bar from the MacBook Pro with the introduction of the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2023.IDG The Touch Bar, meanwhile, was a touch-sensitive OLED display that sat at the top of the keyboard, replacing the row of function keys. It was populated with a range of buttons and actions that changed dynamically depending on which app was in use. Unfortunately, it never really took off: it wasn’t compelling enough to convince users, while it lacked the kind of third-party integrations that could have converted them. The 2016 MacBook Pro wasn’t all bad. The trackpad was roughly twice as large as the one on its predecessor, giving you more room for swipes and gestures. But this MacBook Pro was also known for replacing every port with a USB-C slot–given how little USB-C was in use at the time, it meant you needed an adapter for almost anything you wanted to connect. Tellingly, the butterfly keyboard, Touch Bar, and USB-C exclusivity have all been dropped or rolled back by Apple in the years since. Apple silicon (2020) If the 2016 MacBook Pro was divisive, the 2020 edition has received close to universal acclaim since it launched, and that’s almost entirely down to a single change: the introduction of Apple silicon and the M-series chips in the Mac. Whereas past MacBook Pros were known to be good but not world-beating, Apple silicon changed all that and helped Apple’s laptop ascend to the pinnacle of portable computing – a position it still occupies today. The differences were profound. Intel chips had made MacBook Pros hot and loud while offering performance that wouldn’t exactly cause customers to rush to a local Apple Store. Apple silicon, though, managed to do the impossible: it massively ramped up performance while doing so in a much more efficient package, resulting in a cooler, quieter operation that put far less strain on the battery. Battery life was so much better, in fact, that Apple engineers initially thought their testing software was broken. #id696780f26ea2b .jw-wrapper::before { content: "Mac transition from Intel to Apple chips announcement in 10 minutes" !important; } Despite the paradigm shift that the new chip brought, Apple took it easy when it came to the MacBook Pro design. The 2020 MacBook Pro used the exact same design as the model that came before it, including the Touch Bar and screen sizes. These would both be changed within the next year. With the advent of Apple silicon, Apple showed that it still knew what it took to make a blazing-fast laptop that smoked the competition. It helped counter arguments that the MacBook Pro was overpriced and underperforming, and today makes it a strong option if you’re after a device that can handle demanding workflows without sounding like a jet engine taking off. The future of the MacBook Pro Now that we know how the MacBook Pro got to where it is today, where is it going? If the rumors are correct, the next edition could be just as significant as the models we’ve covered in this article. The biggest new features are said to be coming to the display. First, the MacBook Pro will finally get an OLED screen. This will be an upgrade over the current mini-LED display currently in use and could bring better contrast and black levels to the laptop. Aside from that, Apple is also expected to outfit this MacBook Pro with touchscreen technology. The company has long eschewed this feature, and Steve Jobs himself called it “ergonomically terrible.” Yet the rumors that Apple is building in this functionality have not gone away, and it now seems more likely than not that Apple is about to perform a dramatic about-turn. Few other details are known, other than the idea that the MacBook Pro’s chassis will be slimmed down from its current level. It’s also expected to launch sometime around late 2026 or early 2027. The high-end display features are thought to be reserved for the M6 Pro and M6 Max models, although they’ll probably trickle down to the entry-level MacBook Pro in the coming years.

A Mac version was announced in September, launching first on Steam alongside the existing PC version for $29.99/£24.99 (there’s a cut price offer until January 19). That price allows you to download either the Mac or PC version from Steam, but the Mac version has now been released on the Mac App Store as well, although, of course, that only includes the Mac version. Some rooms contain puzzles, such as a locked trunk, encouraging you to explore further to solve the secrets of the mansion. Dogubomb It’s a puzzle game, set in a sprawling 45-room mansion that was built by the recently-deceased Herbert S. Sinclair. You play Simon P. Jones, the grand-nephew of Sinclair, who is set to inherit the estate – but only if you can locate the mansion’s mysterious Room 46. In many ways, Blue Prince feels like one of those old 2D point-and-click adventure games, where you wander from room to room to look for clues in order to solve a mystery. It brings the adventure format up to date though, with hand-drawn 3D graphics and first-person point of view that create a good sense of atmosphere as you explore the mansion. There are even elements of rogue-like games, as the layout of the mansion shifts and changes every day, so that the path you follow on your first day will be reset overnight forcing you to explore a completely different set of rooms the next day. When you arrive at the mansion for the first time, you pick up a set of blueprints from a table in the main hallway (which, of course, gives the game its title) along with a letter from Sinclair explaining the task ahead of you. The blueprint is initially blank, apart from the hallway where you’re currently standing, but there are three doorways leading off the hall and when you open one of these doors you are presented with a choice of three different rooms that you can add to your blueprint – perhaps a bedroom, a library, or simply another hallway leading to even more rooms. You are able to gradually add and explore more rooms, but you can only walk a limited number of steps each day and then the rooms reset themselves, forcing you to start with a new, blank blueprint the following in-game day. Every time you open a door, you can choose the next room that you want to explore. Dogubomb Sometimes, though, you may find intriguing objects and clues in the rooms. On my first day, I found a locked trunk in a bedroom, prompting me to try and run through as many rooms as possible to locate the key, only to find that I’d run out of steps and had to start again when the rooms were reset. I did find the key the following day – along with a battery and a set of car keys – but the bedroom with the trunk had disappeared overnight, so I had to figure out how to get back to the bedroom once more. Each day presents similar puzzles – such as a set of switches in a room with an electrical fuse-box – so there’s plenty to keep you thinking as you begin each day anew, and it will probably help if you have a notepad by your side to keep track of all the clues you find. Some rooms also provide bonuses, such as additional steps that you can use when exploring, adding a strategic element to the game as well. And, as you progress through the mansion, you’ll occasionally find clues or documents that hint at a deeper mystery and give you a more urgent reason to keep searching every day. Your blue print shows you all the rooms you’ve explored, and items and clues that you’ve found. Dogubomb The game’s cell-shaded graphics initially look flat and two-dimensional, but they have to be true 3D so that you can wander through the rooms and explore, and they have a touch of art-deco flair that adds character to the mansion. It’s not a fast-paced game, though, so you don’t need a powerful Mac to run it properly. The system requirements listed on Steam only specify an Intel i3 processor and macOS 10.12, while the Mac App Store specifies macOS 11 or later, and we were able to run the game quite smoothly on an old Intel iMac and a more recent MacBook Pro with an M2 Pro. Should You Buy Blue Prince? Blue Prince is obviously aimed at fans of puzzle and adventure games. It won’t appeal to the shoot ‘em up crowd, or role-playing D&D fans, but the careful way in which Blue Prince feeds you little breadcrumbs of clues as you wander through the mysterious mansion will prove irresistible for people who like to lose themselves in an engrossing mystery and mind-bending puzzles. Apple Struggling With Key Material Shortage as AI Chips Drain Supply
Apple is confronting a newly intensified supply-chain challenge for future chips as the AI boom has created a global shortage of a key material, Nikkei Asia reports. Apple is said to be struggling to secure sufficient supplies of high-end glass cloth fiber, a material that plays a critical role in the printed circuit boards and chip substrates used in iPhones and other devices. The most advanced forms of this glass cloth are apparently produced almost entirely by one supplier, Nitto Boseki. Apple began using Nittobo's premium glass cloth in chips years before AI computing drove widespread demand for similar materials. As AI workloads have expanded, however, companies such as Nvidia, Google, Amazon, AMD, and Qualcomm have moved aggressively into the same supply pool, placing unprecedented pressure on Nittobo's limited capacity. In response, Apple has taken several unusual steps to protect its supply chain. The company reportedly sent staff to Japan last autumn and stationed them at Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, which produces substrate materials and relies on Nittobo's glass cloth. Apple is also believed to have approached Japanese government officials for assistance in securing supply. Apple is additionally working to qualify alternative suppliers, though progress has been slow. Apple has engaged with smaller Chinese glass fiber producers, including Grace Fabric Technology, and asked Mitsubishi Gas Chemical to help oversee quality improvements. Other potential entrants from Taiwan and China are attempting to scale production, but industry sources said achieving consistent quality at the required level remains difficult. Each glass fiber must be extremely thin, uniform, and free of defects, as the glass cloth is embedded deep inside the chip substrate and cannot be repaired or replaced after assembly. Because of this, major chipmakers have been reluctant to adopt lower-grade materials, even temporarily. Apple has discussed using less-advanced glass cloth as a stopgap, but doing so would require extensive testing and validation and would not significantly ease supply constraints for 2026 products. If you are not interested in subscribing to the new Apple Creator Studio bundle introduced today, you will officially start to miss out on some new features. Apple said some "exciting new intelligent features and premium content" in Final Cut Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, and Freeform will only be accessible with a Creator Studio subscription. In the U.S., a subscription costs $12.99 per month, or $129 per year, while college students can pay a lower $2.99 per month or $29 per year. This means that if you bought Final Cut Pro or Pixelmator Pro via one-time purchase, which will still be an option going forward, you will no longer have access to all new features. However, Apple promises the apps will continue to receive updates. From the Final Cut Pro page on Apple's website, for instance:A one-time purchase will still be available, but access to some of the premium content is available only to Apple Creator Studio subscribers. If you already own Final Cut Pro, it will continue to be updated.There are some exceptions, as Apple says Logic Pro and MainStage will have all the same features whether they are subscription or one-time-purchase versions. It looks like most if not all of the new features that will be limited to Creator Studio subscribers will be powered by AI, as Apple repeatedly describes them as "intelligent" features. The apps are continuing to receive other new features that do not require a subscription over time, so one-time purchasers are not completely left out. As for Keynote, Numbers, Pages, and Freeform, those apps will remain free, but some new intelligent features and content will likewise require a Creator Studio subscription. This means these apps are now effectively "freemium." Here are a few of the first new features coming to Creator Studio subscribers: Pixelmator Pro: A new Warp tool lets you twist and shape image layers. Apple is preparing to mass-produce its own AI-focused server chips in the second half of 2026 amid reliance on a short-term partnership with Google to meet immediate AI expectations, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a new post on X, Kuo said that Apple is facing mounting short-term pressure in artificial intelligence that is shaping its current strategy, even as it continues to pursue long-term control over core AI technologies. Kuo explained that Apple has encountered two immediate challenges in its in-house AI development that have effectively pushed it toward partnering with Google. The first is the need for a credible AI showing at WWDC later this year after previously announcing Apple Intelligence and significant Siri upgrades that have yet to materialize. The second is the rapid pace of improvement in cloud-based AI systems, which has raised expectations to a level where simply delivering on earlier promises may no longer be enough. Kuo argues that as AI capabilities have advanced, user perceptions of what constitutes a competitive assistant or system-level AI have shifted. He said on-device AI is unlikely to drive hardware sales in the near term, but the partnership gives Apple time to manage expectations across its platforms while continuing its own AI development. Over the longer term, Kuo said AI is expected to become central to hardware differentiation, operating system design, and the overall user experience, making ownership of core AI technologies increasingly important. He added that Apple's in-house AI server chips are expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2026, with Apple-operated data centers coming online in 2027. Apple appears close to supporting end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages, almost a year after the GSM Association said it was working to implement the privacy feature for messages sent between Android and iPhone devices. As shared by Tiino-X83 on X (Twitter), the latest iOS 26.3 beta includes references to a new carrier bundle setting that will let carriers enable and disable E2EE for RCS messages. It's possible that the setting relates to making the encryption status of messages visible to the user, as per the GSMA standard's requirements. The requirement is stupulated because local regulations can prohibit E2EE for all users, and users must be notified of encryption status. End-to-end encryption for RCS was announced in March 2025, as part of version 3.0 of the RCS Universal Profile. Apple said it planned to add support to the Messages app in future iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS software updates, but the company has since been silent on the subject. The page will automatically update with the item's latest known location. The item's location stops being shared "as soon as a user is reunited with their item," or automatically expires after seven days. Apple today announced that the Share Item Location feature is now supported by 36 airlines around the world, and we expect more to follow in the future. The vulnerability exists in the RPC communication mechanism where the client can send arbitrary serialized Python objects that will be deserialized on the server side, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary code on the victim's machine.
