Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 update is baaaacck

Apple has re-posted the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update, which it pulled yesterday. Mac OS X 10.6.5 was released last week for both Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server users.

Some who installed the update before it disappeared reported issues on the Apple Discussions forums, saying, for example, the update broke Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and Domain Name System functionality, while another said they had a problem with external drives.

The update presumably fixes these issues. It also reportedly fixes a memory aliasing issue in Dovecot’s handling of user names.

Macs sales on pace for another record breaking quarter

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says new retail sales data shows that Mac sales are up 20% year-over-year. In a note to clients — as reported by “AppleInsider” (http://www.appleinsider.com) he says Apple looks to sell between 4.1 million and 4.3 million Macs over the holiday season.

This early data, along with our assumptions for international Mac sales, which are growing faster than domestic Mac sales, and the final 2 months of the quarter, implies (year-over-year) Mac unit growth of 22%-28%, in line with the Street at about 24% year-over-yeargrowth, Munster told clients.

Professor: Apple is company that most endangers the Internet

Columbia law professor Tim Wu, the man who coined the term “net neutrality,” says that Apple is the company that most endangers the freedom of the Internet. And he tells the “New York Times” (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/one-on-one-tim-wu-author-of-the-master-switch/) that he expects that danger to outlive CEO Steve Jobs’ tenure at Apple.
