New email worm rears its head

A new fast-spreading email worm, which goes by the name of “Mydoom,” “Novarg” or “WORM–MIMAIL.R,” is causing significant problems for network administrators and clogging up network traffic since its appearance on Monday, notes the Associated Press. The worm runs on Windows operating systems and “has all the characteristics of being the next big one,” said Steven Sundermeier, Central Command’s vice president of products and services.

SubRosaSoft.com today announced the availability of FTPDroplet 1.0, an easy-to-use utility for helping users upload files to Web servers (FTP Servers). “Once you enter the account information for the ftp site, you can simply drag-and-drop files you want to upload and FTPDroplet will take care of the rest. No settings, buttons, menus, or mouse-clicks, it’s just plain simple to use,” notes the press release. FTPDroplet is free of charge, but does require registration.

Virginia Tech to upgrade supercomputer with Xserve G5s

Virginia Tech said on Tuesday that it will upgrade its “X” supercomputer built from 1,100 Power Mac G5s with Apple’s recently introduced Xserve G5 1U servers. The new system will be completed by May for an undetermined cost. Using the thinner Xserves “cuts the system’s size down by a factor of three,” Srinidhi Varadarajan, assistant professor of computer science, college of engineering, at Virginia Tech said.

Apple releases AirPort Software 3.3

Apple has released AirPort Software 3.3 via the Mac OS X Software Update preference pane. According to the release notes, this update provides “improved AirPort wireless networking software, and is recommended for all users with an AirPort Extreme and AirPort enabled computer or an AirPort Extreme base station. This software provides support for the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) specification for the AirPort Extreme base station and AirPort Extreme and AirPort clients. Also included in this release is v5.3 of the AirPort Extreme base station firmware.”
