San Francisco Chronicle columnist John King has a problem with Apple’s new flagship store in San Francisco’s Union Square: “Apple computers defy expectations. The company’s innovations keep slow-moving rivals like Microsoft on edge with products that come in a mind-bending array of colors and shapes. So why has this bastion of creativity dropped a windowless box two blocks from Union Square? The cube at the corner of Stockton and Eddy streets is handsome, to be sure, a gleaming package stuffed with such goodies as an all-glass staircase. But it’s not a real building. It’s a 30-foot-high corporate branding concept that could be located anywhere. And it fails the first test of good architecture–to be a good neighbor.”
