iPod helps John Mayer with new album

John Mayer’s follow-up to 2001’s “Room For Squares” will be released this fall — and he says that Apple’s iPod has been instrumental in his writing. “I have the Apple iPod, it’s great. Because I can burn my demos and put them into the iPod and then listen to them as I’m driving, or as am going to a radio station, and just really just have time to sit in it and think about it,” Mayer told Launch. “And it’s really fun. It’s really, really fun.”

Apple Australia gets new managing director

Apple Australia today announced that Tony King will be its new managing director for the country, reports ARN. King is replacing Ben Bowley, who left the company at the end of March. King was recruited from IBM, where he ran its PC division for Asia-Pacific. King had previously worked for Dell as that company’s CFO and GM for its small business, government and education division.

O’Reilly announces OS X Innovators Contest winners

O’Reilly announced the winners of this year’s Mac OS X Innovators Contest at the O’Reilly Open Source Convention today. The contest, sponsored by the Apple Developer Connection (ADC), rewards “innovative Mac OS X applications, plug-ins, user interface widgets, or other creative original software.” In the new International category, Hydra took top honors, while LaunchBar for OS X claimed second place.
