Blackout has no effect on G5 chip production

Apple’s Nathalie Welch said that last week’s blackout in the Northeast US did not have any effect on G5 chip production. (As previously reported, IBM’s East Fishkill, NY plant, where the PowerPC G5 is produced, was temporarily shut down due to the power outage.) “As indicated by the single configuration shipping release, we are still on track for delivery of all systems as announced,” Welch told MacMinute.

Power Mac G5s shipping with Mac OS X 10.2.7

Apple told MacMinute today that the new Power Mac G5 will ship with Mac OS X 10.2.7, an update that will offer a redesigned kernel and updated system software math libraries tuned specifically for the 64-bit PowerPC G5 processor. This updated kernel delivers “the most substantial benefits of 64-bit computing” by breaking through the 4GB memory barrier, enabling the OS to use all of the RAM that can be added to the G5 (currently 8GB).

IBM fires 600, furloughs 3,000 in chip unit

Bloomberg reports that IBM will lay off 600 workers and furlough 3,000 for one week without pay at its chipmaking business to reduce costs. About 500 of the firings will be made at IBM’s Burlington, Vermont, factory. About 100 people at other chip facilities in cities including Austin, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Rochester, Minnesota; and East Fishkill, New York will lose their jobs. The furloughs will be staggered to avoid a reduction in chip production.
