Apple releases Backup 2 for .Mac members

Apple has released the final version of Backup 2, its file archiving utility for .Mac members. The new version brings the ability to back up to external hard drives and mounted volumes including FireWire hard drives, iPods, and network servers. Backup 2 also lets you make backup CDs and DVDs using external drives.

Pixar’s ‘Finding Nemo’ sets DVD/video sales record

Pixar today announced that “Finding Nemo” sold 8 million units on DVD and video in North America on its first day of availability, making it the fastest selling title ever. The previous record of first day sales was held by Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.” with 5 million units sold. Pixar said that based on this first day sales figures, “Finding Nemo” is now on track to be the best-selling DVD and video of 2003 and the top selling DVD of all time.

Minn. school board members ousted after iBook deal

Three incumbent members of Stillwater, Minnesota’s school board were voted out Tuesday apparently over the school district’s decision to provide junior high students with Apple iBooks. According to the Pioneer Press, Mary Cecconi, Christy Hlavacek and John Uppgren — all of whom voted for the laptop plan — lost their bids for re-election.

Corel Painter 8.1 brings back Custom Palettes

Corel has released Painter 8.1, an update to its natural-media painting software. Version 8.1 re-introduces the Custom Palettes feature from Painter 7. “While there are some minor differences between the Custom Palettes in version 7 and 8, they are fundamentally the same,” the company said. The free update also contains more than 20 various fixes for the application.
