Granite Digital has started shipping its new Smart Drive Series of FireWire enclosures, which feature low-profile, external storage enclosures with built-in LCDs and keypads for accessing information on the FireWire-IDE bridge, the hard drive, the FireWire connection, and the host computer. The enclosures utilize Granite Digital’s FireVue 1394-IDE bridge controllers, which feature the Oxford 911 chipset capable of transferring data up to 40MB/sec.

Bare Bones Software has announced a “Not-at-the-Show” special offer for BBEdit and Mailsmith. This week only, Bare Bones is offering BBEdit 6.5 and Mailsmith 1.5 for US$79 each ($39 upgrade), as well as a free “BBEdit: It Doesn’t Suck” T-shirt.

After capturing high marks from PC Magazine last week for its customer service and reliability, Apple has garnered similar praise from Nikkei Personal Computing in Japan. As with PC Magazine, Dell captured the top spot, although Apple’s performance is notable for its significant improvements in some categories from the previous year.

Corel has announced that Corel Photo-Paint 10 for Mac will be bundled with HP’s entire line of Scanjet 7400 scanners. Additionally, CorelDraw 10 will be included with the Scanjet 7490c. The Scanjet 7400 series consists of three scanners that feature a 2400×2400 dpi optical scanning resolution and range in cost from US$499 to $899.

C|net has published an article outlining a number of announcements Microsoft will make this week, starting with today’s news of the company’s next-generation Windows Media 9 multimedia software. C|net calls the announcement “the first of several preemptive strikes against Apple Computer’s Macworld trade show” noting that the “announcements about new technologies far ahead of their delivery to market.”
