WorldCom to file for bankruptcy

WorldCom CEO John Sidgmore has said his company will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy later Sunday, according to Reuters. The bankruptcy, which analysts viewed as inevitable, will be the largest in U.S. history. WorldCom revealed last month that it improperly accounted for US$3.85 billion in expenses, wiping out more than a year’s worth of profits and sending already battered shares down further. At its peak, WorldCom was valued at about $190 billion; today the company is worth about a quarter-billion dollars.

Apple releases Security Update 7-18-02

Apple has posted another new security revision to its Software Update utility. Security Update 7-18-02 “delivers a more secure Software Update service, as well as an updated Software Update command line tool, to verify that future updates originate from Apple.” The update is available via the Software Update utility under Mac OS X, or manually via the link above.

Apple Store employees rise to the occasion

west retail store in New York City was tested beyond it’s wildest dreams on Saturday, with an electrical power outage that affected a large part of lower Manhattan. The outage, caused by an electrical fire at a nearby sub-station, shut down power to over 63,500 residences and businesses early Saturday afternoon and continued on into Sunday. Instead of closing its doors like many retailers, the resourceful crew at the Apple store weathered the storm by demonstrating Macintosh laptops and iPods in the street and completing transactions on handwritten receipts.
