RealNetworks today introduced RealVideo 9, the latest version of its Internet video streaming solution that delivers a 30 percent reduction in bandwidth compared to version 8. Real claims that the new system delivers data comparable in quality to the Apple-backed MPEG-4 format, which Real also supports, at half the bit-rate, allowing VHS quality video to be streamed at 160Kbps and DVD quality video at 500Kbps. RealPlayer 8, which is available for Mac OS 8/9, can already take advantage of RealVideo 9. Additionally, Real launched an MPEG-4 interoperability site today, which enables MPEG-4 encoder and player developers to verify their products compatibility with RealNetworks’ RealSystem software. Real also announced its entry into the MPEG-4 Industry Forum.
