digital.forest Announces Alder 2.5 Database Management Tool

BOTHELL, WASHINGTON, July 7, 1998 — digital.forest, Inc., the world’s
premier provider of Macintosh Internet hosting services today announced a
new software tool, Alder, that enables webmasters to remotely manage
FileMaker Pro databases via a web browser.

“Web publishing with FileMaker Pro is easy, but there was still the problem
of uploading and opening new databases on a remote web server,” said Chris
Kilbourn, president of digital.forest. “FileMaker Pro has no mechanism for
closing an open database on a remote server and then opening a new
database. We created Alder as an internal tool to allow our clients to
remotely upload and open a new database without system operator
intervention. Alder allows our clients to manage their datbases on their
schedule, not ours.

“With the commercial release of Alder, the rest of the FileMaker Pro
hosting community will be able to be more productive by not having to wait
for a remote human operator to switch a database for them.” Kilbourn said.

Some of the features of Alder include the creation of incoming, live, and
closed database folders; the ability to remotely open, close, and move
FileMaker Pro databases; the ability to upload password-controlled
databases; an easy to use webpage interface; control over the number of
databases open per account and startup scripting for reboot events.

digital.forest plans to release three versions of Alder: a freeware
single-user version that is limited to one user account; a single-user
version that includes PreFab’s Player Runtime to allow for automatic
dismissal of dialog boxes; and a multi-user version that comes with the
Player Runtime. Site licenses and educational pricing will be available.

System requirements of Alder include MacOS System 7 or above and UserLand
Frontier version 4.2.3 or above.

The scheduled release date for Alder is late July 1998.
