Metrowerks to Ship Standalone Java Tools for Macintosh and Windows

Academic Version to Ship as a Feature of Apple Developer Connection Student
Program

Seattle, WA-December 9, 1998-Metrowerks, Inc., (NASDAQ:MTWKF,SE/ME:MWK) a
leading provider of software development tools for desktop and embedded
systems, today announced at CAUSE 98 that CodeWarrior Professional for Java
and CodeWarrior Academic for Java will ship in January 1999. These products
will be Java-only versions of the award-winning CodeWarrior integrated
development tools that support development for C, C++, Java and Pascal. The
academic version of the Macintosh-hosted Java tools will be included on the
Apple Developer Connection (ADC) Student Program CD as part of an agreement
with Apple Computer, Inc. The Spring 1999 release of these tools will
include easy-to-use rapid application development (RAD) tools for building
graphical user interfaces (GUIs).

CodeWarrior Professional for Java and CodeWarrior Academic for Java
CodeWarrior Professional for Java will be a Java-only version of the
multi-language CodeWarrior Professional tools that Metrowerks currently
ships. Like the multi-language product, it will include support for both
Macintosh- and Windows-hosted development. Solaris-hosted tools are
currently sold separately. CodeWarrior Academic for Java will provide
students with the same powerful development tools suite found in the
professional product but at a lower cost and including certain licensing
restrictions. Both products will be released at a Release 4 version level,
consistent with the current multi-language product.

CodeWarrior maintains project file compatibility and general appearance
across Macintosh, Windows, and Solaris hosts, allowing large organizations
to maintain a single, consistent graphical development environment across
all systems while giving individual developers the power to choose a
specific host platform. CodeWarrior has also maintained the highest
compliance with the Java standards. As Rex Baldazo, senior technical editor
for CNET Builder.com, points out in his recent comparison editorial, Battle
of the Java Development Tools, when developing on Windows, “I’ll move over
to CodeWarrior to make sure I’m producing 100 percent pure Java.”

“We have received numerous requests from the Java development community to
create a dedicated Java tool set for those developers who are solely
engaged in Java development,” said Jean Belanger, chairman and chief
executive officer of Metrowerks. “We had separate, standalone Java products
for Macintosh and Windows in the past. Now that we have integrated our
Macintosh and Windows tools, shipped our Solaris-hosted Java tools, and are
about to unveil our RAD support for GUI development, we feel the time is
right to re-introduce a standalone Java product.”

CodeWarrior Academic for Java on Macintosh To Be Included as Part of Apple
Developer Connection (ADC) Student Program

In conjunction with the release of the standalone Java product, Metrowerks
has entered into an agreement with Apple Computer, Inc. to include
CodeWarrior Academic for Java on Macintosh as a feature of the ADC Student
Program CD. Any person that joins this program during the next year will
receive, at no additional charge, the most currently available release of
the Macintosh-hosted version of CodeWarrior Academic for Java.

“Metrowerks’ decision to deliver CodeWarrior for Java shows that developers
worldwide are taking advantage of Macintosh to grow their businesses,” said
Clent Richardson, vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple
Computer, Inc. “Apple is committed to having the best Java implementation
on any platform. CodeWarrior for Java gives us some of the best Java
development tools available, and our student developer program bundle opens
Java development on Macintosh to the next generation of software
developers.”

“We are pleased to support Apple in its commitment to student developers by
providing a solution that they can easily deploy in their developer
program,” said Jean Belanger. “Our academic tools have always provided
students with the same powerful tools that professionals use at a price
that students can afford. This agreement makes access even easier for Mac
student developers.”

Support for Rapid Application Development Metrowerks is currently beta
testing RAD tools for both Macintosh- and Windows-hosted Java development.
RAD tools will ship on the Release 5 tool set due in the Spring 1999 and
include such features as drag-and-drop editing, live component
configuration, and source code generation. Customers who purchase Release 4
tools will receive Release 5 and Release 6 tools under a special upgrade
promotion.
