iMac G5 demand strong; Apple retail risk has passed

In addition to raising iPod sales and first quarter Apple earnings estimates, Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich also said that demand is strong for the company’s iMac G5. In a research note to clients, Milunovich raised iMac numbers slightly from 240,000 units to 250,000 in the December quarter and from 874,000 to 900,000 for the year. He also notes that Best Buy is now selling the iMac G5 on its Web site.

Apple begins shipping iMac G5s

Several MacMinute readers report that they have received confirmation from Apple that their iMac G5 orders have shipped. According to the reader reports, both the 17-inch and 20-inch configurations are now shipping. G5 to power new iMac

During Apple’s third quarter conference call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer revealed that the next generation iMac, which will begin shipping in September, will be powered by the PowerPC G5 processor. He said an IBM chip shortage was behind the delay of the new Apple desktops. Earlier this month, Apple quietly announced that it is no longer taking orders for the current iMac and that a new model will be introduced in September.
