With the Mac having around 13% of the computer market share in the U.S. and Microsoft making one boo-boo after another, the time has come for Mac OS X to put a serious dent in Windows’ marketshare.

Not only has the iPad put a dent in PC (but not Mac) sales, but the iPad mini is expected to accentuate the trend. In a note to clients J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz predicts the smaller Apple tablet will steal even more sales away from the weakening personal computer market.

Mobile phones to overtake computers as most common web access device

The Gartner research group (www.gartner.com) predicts that by 2013 mobile phones will overtake personal computers as as the most common Web access device worldwide and that by 2015 over 80% of the handsets sold in mature markets will be smartphones.

However, only 20%of those handsets are likely to be Windows phones. By 2015 media tablet shipments will reach around 50% of laptop shipments and Windows 8 will likely be in third place behind Google’s Android and Apple iOS operating systems.

ICE dumping Blackberries for iPhones

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) will end its contract with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion in favor of the iPhone, reports “Reuters” (http://macte.ch/BrhEZ).

The agency said in a solicitation document posted last week that it intends to buy iPhones for more than 17,600 employees — a purchase worth US$2.1 million. According to “Reuters,” the agency said RIM “can no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency.”

Analyst: ‘iPad mini’ to be ‘competition’s worst nightmare’

In a note to clients — as reported by “AppleInsider” (www.appleinsider.com) — Sterne Agree analyst Shaw Wu thinks the rumored “iPad mini” (expected to be officially announced next week) — will be the “competition’s worst nightmare.”

He says those competitors are already struggling to compete against the US$399 iPad 2 and $499 iPad. Apple hitting an even lower price point will only expand its share of the tablet market, Wu says.
