iOS takes record-high profit share in smartphone operating system profits

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com), global smartphone operating profit reached US$21 billion in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2014. The Android operating system captured a record-low 11% global smartphone profit share during the quarter. In contrast, while Apple’s iOS took a record-high 89% profit share.

Global smartphone operating profit grew 31% annually from US$16.2 billion in Q4 2013 to US$21.2 billion in Q4 2014, notes the research group.

Multi-factor authentication market worth US$13.2 billion in 2020

Market intelligence from ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) finds that the global mobile multi-factor authentication software and service market will be worth US$1.6 billion by the end of 2015.

Username and passwords have been widely used to authenticate user identity but fail to provide adequate authentication, says the research group. Authentication-based attacks continue to plague organizations of all sizes with the majority of breaches being attributed to weak or absent authentication.

By 2017, mobile commerce revenue to be 50% of U.S. digital commerce

Rampant interest in mobile payments is expected by 2015, along with a significant increase in mobile commerce. Due to this, Gartner, Inc. (www.gartner.com) predicts that by 2017, U.S. customers’ mobile engagement behavior will drive mobile commerce revenue in the U.S. to 50%of U.S. digital commerce revenue.

A recent Gartner survey found that mobile commerce currently generates 22% of digital commerce revenue.
