Search & Rescue 1.0, as noted by MacNN, is a new data-recovery utility from Total Recall Software. Total Recall has been in the data recovery industry for many years, and worked with its software division to create the US$199.95 utility. An Mac OS X version will be available soon for $49.95 more. Search & Rescue 1.0 is compatible with both the HFS and HFS+ file systems.

Apple’s iBook continues to hit a homerun with the press, as Business Week and The Washington Post have praised the laptop in their reviews. “Because it’s a Mac, many people will overlook or ignore the iBook,” reads the Business Week review, “even though its pricing is more than competitive with Windows-based portables.

Bare Feats has posted a pair of benchmarks comparing nVIDIA’s GeForce3 to the GeForce2 MX and ATI’s Radeon. The GeForce3 clearly appears to be the card to beat, especially as games become increasingly complex. For current GeForce2 MX owners, the page also compares performance of that card with version 1.1 drivers and the as-of-yet-unreleased version 2.1 drivers. Look for a 10-20 percent performance boost with the drivers.

The Washington Business Journal (article not online) reported today that Apple will launch a second retail store near Washington, DC — 9.6 miles from one of its first national locations which opened May 19 in McLean, Virginia. The new store is slated to open November 1 in Arlington, VA at the Clarendon Market Common, less than two miles from the American capital.
