HP introduces five new scanners

HP today announced five new scanners, including the Photo Scanner 1000, a US$99 USB scanner that makes it easy to scan photos up to 4″x6″ with “photo-quality” results. The scanner features a 300 dpi optical resolution and 30-bit color. HP also introduced the Scanjet 4400c, 4470c, 5470c, and 5490c, upgraded versions of their predecessors that feature HP scanning technology previously found only on higher-end models.

Intel powers laptops ahead to 1.13GHz

While Mac laptops rest at 500MHz, Intel today unveiled a new Pentium III-M mobile processor with speeds up to 1.13GHz. The chips consume 40 percent less power and run 20 percent faster than previous generation mobile Pentium III chips, according to Intel. The processors are also the first of any to use .13-micro technology, as opposed to the .18-micron procedure used in Pentium 4 and G4 chips. Laptops featuring the 1.13GHz chip are slated to ship in August.

Despite hot products, Apple still faces a very long, uphill battle in higher education

A lengthy and interesting article in the August 3 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education titled “Despite raves for iBook, tide still turns against Apple” discusses Apple’s mixed standing in higher education and the challenges that the company faces outside of building cool computers. The article, noted by MacSurfer, also cites several examples of schools that have switched from Mac to PC over the years, and that continued trend among other schools today.
