Intel executive: Bluetooth has lost

Bluetooth, the wireless technology that competed in some regards against 802.11b (AirPort) is all but dead right now, according to Sean Maloney, vice president and general manager of the Intel Communications Group. “802.11 has won. Bluetooth is in full retreat from Moscow at the moment. It may end up winning but right now it isn’t… Bluetooth will survive but it will be a much more niche product than expected,” Maloney said yesterday.

ATI, Intel pledge support for FireWire

ATI and Intel today announced their support of the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) standard as a connection method on computers. Intel’s public backing of the technology is somewhat surprising given the company’s involvement with USB 2.0, although Intel maintains that it has always supported FireWire. Alongside the announcement, ATI unveiled its All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500DV, a PC only card that combines all the features of its high-end video card along with a FireWire port.

Iomega announces easy-to-use CD-RW software

Iomega today announced its new HotBurn CD authoring software, which it says “consistently performs faster than the industry leader for users of all experience levels.” The software is designed to make CD burning as simple as possible, with two-step data and audio CD burning, and one-step CD duplication. HotBurn will be bundled with Iomega CD-RW drives starting in October.

The new version adds support for generating Delivery Confirmation barcodes. P.O. Toolbox is available for Mac OS 8/9 and Mac OS X and costs US$99.95; a CD is $10 more.
