Proxim today announced its HomeRF Symphony product line, which represent its third generation of the wireless technology. Symphony functions at speeds of up to 10Mbps and is less prone to interference than 802.11b (Airport), the company claims. The Symphony Base Station is available for US$199.95 while the USB and PC cards sell for $99.95. Currently compatible only with Windows, Proxim plans to add Mac support in early 2002.

Apple has quietly pulled the Power Mac G4 4.1.9 firmware update, released last week, after the update caused some Power Mac G4 systems to lose audio capabilities. Apple claims that upgrading to Mac OS 9.2.1 will restore audio, however. The G4 Cube and iMac firmware updates that were released alongside the Power Mac G4 update are still available and are not affected by the audio issue.

While not noted on Apple’s retail store page, an image that appeared on Apple’s Hot News page earlier today reveals that it plans to open a store in Buffalo, New York, at the Walden Galleria on Saturday, October 6. Apple’s Palo Alto, California, store at University Avenue is also scheduled to open this Saturday.

Apple has made the Mac OS X 10.1 Developer Tools available for download from the Apple Developer Connection (registration required). The Dev Tools are also available on CD with full retail copies of Mac OS X 10.1 and 10.1 updates obtained from the Mac OS Up-To-Date program. The tools are a 185MB download.

The University Macintosh Users Group (UMUG) at The University of Texas at Austin will be hosting a panel of speakers on Tuesday, October 9 in WEL 2.224. They will be discussing what companies look for in developers for intern and new hire positions. Speakers will include Jim Hillhouse, a local Mac developer who is starting a new company — nWerx; Daniel Updegrove, Vice President for Information Technology at the University of Texas; and Tiffany Smith from Metrowerks.
