This week’s Byte of the Apple column at BusinessWeek Online examines the adoption of Mac OS X, the proliferation of native applications, and a handful of shortcomings that persist with the operating system.

WiebeTech today announced that its FireWire Keychain will ship in March for US$99.95. The miniature device uses dealer- or user-installed CompactFlash media, requires no drivers, and gets its power from the FireWire port. The device has also been slightly reduced in size since we reported on it last week, now measuring 1.75″x2.35″x0.75″.

Lexar Media has announced plans to begin shipping its 16x-speed 1GB CompactFlash Type II card on January 31. The industry-leading CompactFlash card will carry a US$1,199 price tag.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak today announced the launch of Wheels of Zeus [currently pointing to woz.org], a new company that will design wireless consumer electronics “to help everyday people track everyday things.” The products will have “universal appeal among consumers and corporations alike,” Wozniak said in a statement. Wheels of Zeus has secured US$6 million in first-round financing.

Shawn King will broadcast his new Internet radio show, Your Mac Life, tonight from 21:00-23:00 ET. While the show will not be delivered live, King will be in chat rooms to discuss the show with listeners. Tonights’s guests include A.G. Edwards analyst Brett Miller, who will discuss Apple’s earnings, and Bob Levitus, who will talk about Apple’s new products, as well as a special guest.
