4D Press has released Jumpstart 4D, a new book by Steve Hussey that teaches the basics of the 4D development environment. The book provides step-by-step instructions for developing a 4D database solution. Jumpstart 4D is available for free online in PDF format or as a paperback book for US$29.99.

StageTools released on Friday MovingPicture 3.0, a newversion of its software for panning and zooming on high-resolution images for video. New features include motion-blur, timeline scrubbing, multi-image Flash output, and a number of productivity enhancements. The software sells for US$199.

Handspring’s Treo, which combines a PDA with phone and Internet capabilities, is now available in the UK, Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway. The Treo will be available in Switzerland by the end of March. Handspring is looking to expand into other European countries in the near future.

Agfa Monotype today announced that 19 of its TrueType fonts are now shipping with Mac OS X. Many of those fonts, such as Baskerville, Gill Sans, and Papyrus, have been shipping since the operating system’s release. Updated 12:30 – An Agfa spokesperson clarified that all 19 fonts have been included with Mac OS X since its release — the company only issued a press release now, however.

The U.S. House of Representatives seems ready to oppose any bill that would require digital devices to feature software that would prevent the copying of copyrighted works, according to Wired. The controversial Security Systems Standards and Certification Act (SSSCA), which has been drafted but not yet introduced in the Senate, gained momentum last week after leaders of the entertainment industry told a Senate committee that their industry is threated by piracy.
