Greg’s bite: an open letter to Apple

No matter how visionary a CEO is, no matter how much testing you do, no matter how elegant the design, real world electronic devices sometimes have unexpected issues.  

Sometimes they are overblown, to be sure. I think this is one of those times. But marketing and public relations must trump being being defensive about a perceived problem that few people really understand. They know what they read. Apple does not need any more reasons, valid or not, for people to pass on an iPhone and buy an Android phone.

Bookends for Mac OS X updated to version 11.0.6

Sonny Software has released Bookends 11.0.6, a Mac-only full-featured bibliography/reference and information management application for professionals and students. You can now attach multiple files to the same reference with one drag and drop.

You can also import multiple text files with one drag and drop. Witih Bookends 11.0.6, you can automatically rename attachments by title. It sports improved author “ignore list” for sorting, drag and drop import of references to a specific group and an attachment indicator displayed in red if a reference has more than one attachment.

VueScan 8.6.44 removes ‘Input/Scan from Preview’ option

Hamrick Software has released Vuescan 8.6.44, a new version of the VueScan software for Mac OS X that’s designed to let users produce better digital images from color snapshots, negatives, slides and documents. The new version removes the “‘Input/Scan from Preview’ option. This is now controlled by preview and scan resolution.

The Standard Edition of VueScan costs US$39.95 and the Professional Edition is $79.95 for a single user license. Multi-user licenses are available. A fully functional, trial copy of VueScan is available for download from the Hamrick web site (http://www.hamrick.com).

Restore lost, deleted files with ReclaiMe

RecialMe (http://www.recialme.com) has released ReclaiMe, a data recovery application that lets computer users to restore folders and files that they’ve accidentally deleted, or that have become lost.

It runs on Windows, but it can recover files from your Windows, Mac, or UNIX/Linux drives, as well as USB and eSATA drives, and the memory cards used in digital cameras, mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players, and video recorders. ReclaiMe comes in four editions.
