Apple told to deal with mis-priced online items in Taiwan

Apple was threatened Monday with a fine if it didn’t act on a dispute in which thousands of visitors to its online store in Taiwan tried to buy computers that were wrongly priced at massive discounts, reports “AFP” (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100726/ts_alt_afp/taiwanuscomputercompanyapple_20100726132723).

The Taipei city government said Apple had mis-priced two models Friday afternoon, with one on sale for a little over 40% of what it should have been. Apple corrected the prices hours later but by that time more than 200,000 units had been ordered.

New iMacs, Mac Pros coming soon?

Various sources say the Mac Pro, the iMac and the Cinema Display will get updates soon, perhaps as early as Tuesday. Look for USB 3 support to be added, and perhaps Firewire 1600/3200.

I also suspect the new iMac will sport an HDMI port. What you almost certainly won’t see is Blu-ray (which means Apple is still lagging Windows competitors in this area).

The new iMacs will probably pack faster Core i5 and/or i7 processors. I think there’s a chance — though perhaps a slim one — that a high-end iMac might come in a six-core option.

Khronos Group releases OpenGL 4.1 spec

The Khronos Group has released the OpenGL 4.1 spec, bringing the latest graphics functionality to the cross-platform 2D and 3D graphics API (application programming interface). It’s the sixth update to OpenGL specification in two years.

This new version continues to maintain full backwards compatibility to enable developers to begin using new features whenever they choose, while portably accessing state-of-the-art GPU functionality across diverse operating systems and platforms, according to Barthold Lichtenbelt, OpenGL ARB working group chair and senior manager Core OpenGL at Nvidia.
