 App4mac updates Giddy Up for Mac OS X

App4mac has introduced Giddy Up 1.0.3 (http://www.app4mac.com/giddyup.html), an update of the web browser designed for kids. Mostly used by schools, it can also be used at home for all children of a family. The new version tweaks the interface and fixes some bugs.

Giddy Up — built with the Apple Safari Engine also named WebKit — allows you to restrict access to some web sites, the operating system, system settings, the downloading of files and applications. It was developed with the intention to add maximum security and protection for kids, according to the folks at App4Mac.

China Unicom to offer iPhone 4 on Sept. 16

China Unicom is set to launch Apple’s iPhone 4 on the mainland September 16, a source from China Unicom told “Caixin Online” (http://macosg.me/2/rf).

According to the source, customers that want to buy the iPhone4 from China Unicom will need to order the phone online ahead of the launch date. China Unicom, the exclusive provider of iPhone in China, launched the 8G version of the iPhone 3GS on Aug. 9.

iPads, Kindles better than books for the environment

According to the environmental consulting firm Cleantech, which aggregated a series of studies, devices such as the iPad and Kindle are better for the environment than printed books, reports the “Washington Post” (http://macosg.me/2/rd).

How so? Cleantech says a single book generates about 7.5 kilograms (almost 17 pounds) of carbon dioxide equivalents. That’s the value of all its greenhouse gas emissions expressed in terms of the impact of carbon dioxide. This figure includes production, transport and either recycling or disposal.

Iomega offers eGo drives with USB 3.0

Iomega (http://www.iomega.com) is moving to the new USB 3.0 interface for all Iomega USB 2.0 portable hard drives, beginning with the line of Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drives. And they’ll sell at the same prices as their USB 2.0 versions, says Iomega.

Iomega plans to move all eGo Portable Hard Drives in 500GB and 1TB capacities to the new USB 3.0 interface by early October. They’ll be compatible with all USB 2.0 computers, which is good since Apple is dragging its feet in implementing USB 3.0.
