iOS takes record-high profit share in smartphone operating system profits

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com), global smartphone operating profit reached US$21 billion in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2014. The Android operating system captured a record-low 11% global smartphone profit share during the quarter. In contrast, while Apple’s iOS took a record-high 89% profit share.

Global smartphone operating profit grew 31% annually from US$16.2 billion in Q4 2013 to US$21.2 billion in Q4 2014, notes the research group.

LTE-Advanced networks have been actively deployed around the world. At the end of 2014, LTE-Advanced covered its first 100 million people worldwide, just 4 years since the network’s inception. ABI Research (www.abirsearch.com) predicts that the coverage will reach one billion in four more years.

At the end of 2014, there were 49 commercially available LTE-Advanced networks around the world. Western European operators lead the commercialization with 20 operators, followed by 13 in Asia-Pacific; however, North America still commands the largest population coverage at 7.8%.
