New video proves that MacBook Neo lives rent-free in Microsoft’s head
Macworld Sure, the MacBook Neo is pricier than it was a few months ago, but it’s still a great deal. It’s also still a threat to the Windows PC makers, so Microsoft, which makes the operating system at the core of those cheap, flimsy laptops that compete with the Neo, has gone on the offensive. It first published a white paper that made apples-to-oranges hardware comparisons and touted the virtues of Windows (hahahahahaha). In its newest move, the Microsoft Windows X account posted a video of the new $699 Dell XPS 13 laptop, which is supposed to highlight the laptop’s design and construction. However, while there’s no direct comparison to the MacBook Neo in the video, and it’s basically a re-creation a user-made video that compares an older Dell laptop to the Neo. Touchscreen. If anything, it further proves Apple’s point with the MacBook Neo, that customers shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality for price. The new XPS 13 is definitely several steps up in quality compared to the HP PC laptop in the older video. If anything, the new video shows how much better the Dell laptop is than HP’s. You might even say it offers Neo-like quality for the same price. The XPS 13 got a lot of attention during its reveal in early June. Dell went out of its way to compare it to the MacBook Neo, but one of its most glaring drawbacks is its 8GB of RAM. But that’s what the Neo has, you say, so what’s the problem? Well, macOS is much better with 8GB of RAM than Windows is, and people who use Windows a lot more than we here at Macworld say that 8GB for Windows is not enough. In any case, this isn’t the last we’ll hear from Microsoft, Dell, or any of Apple’s other competitors with MacBook Neo comparisons because the MacBook Neo is a hot seller. What will be interesting to see is if Microsoft finally realizes that the major problem isn’t PC hardware, but Windows. Until its problems are addressed, the Neo will be a problem for Microsoft at any price.

‘Constructive’ Siri AI meeting sparks hope for iPhone users overseas
Macworld The big news at Apple’s WWDC event last month was the launch of Siri AI, an upgraded and rebranded version of its beleaguered voice assistant. The software was promptly released in beta form to a generally positive reception, and it will roll out to the general public in the fall as part of the OS 27 updates. But not every customer will get to join in. In a spiky open letter published on the same day as the announcement, Apple explained that Siri AI will be delayed for iPhone and iPad owners in the EU as a result of regulatory issues–namely the Digital Markets Act, which has been the source of considerable tension between Brussels and Big Technology. “[The EU’s] refusal to engage constructively on solutions that preserve privacy and security means we do not currently have a timeline for Siri AI’s availability on iOS and iPadOS in the EU,” said Craig Federighi in a statement. It’s still coming to EU users as part of macOS 27 and visionOS 27, but anything more than that is currently uncertain. While somewhat predictable, this impasse appeared to be bad news for all parties: Apple, because it misses out on a significant user base for its flagship new platform (and the data it would glean from them); customers, who are stuck with Siri in its current and frankly unfit-for-purpose condition; and probably even the EU, which in the eyes of many has been landed with the blame. So it’s imperative for some form of agreement to be reached, and the signs appear to be cautiously positive. This week, as reported by Reuters, Apple CEO Tim Cook has held talks with European technology chief Henna Virkkunen. “We can confirm that the call between ⁠[Virkkunen] and [Cook] took place,” said an EU spokesperson. “It was a constructive exchange ​on topics of common interest, on which the work continues.” These words aren’t much, but they offer some hope of reconciliation. And they mirror one of the few cheerful sections of Apple’s earlier open letter, which insisted that the company hoped “to eventually bring Siri AI to the EU, and we will continue to engage with EU regulators on a path forward.” The Financial Times [paywall] further specifies that the meeting was virtual, and included “a discussion of how Apple can launch its reinvented Siri in Europe while avoiding millions of dollars in fines for violating the bloc’s flagship competition rules, according to two people familiar with the talks.” Cook has exactly two months left in his time as Apple CEO, but the ascension of John Ternus to that role on September 1 won’t see his predecessor leave the company entirely. As executive chairman of the board, in fact, he’s likely to spend a large part of his time conducting this kind of political liaison. Siri AI isn’t perfect, but it’s a big improvement on old Siri. Plus, it’s still in beta and will get better.Foundry Anarchy in the U.K. As if this wasn’t enough of a headache, Apple faces difficulties elsewhere in Europe this week. In Britain, to be precise, which is no longer part of the EU but has hit upon a useful way of negotiating with tech giants: copy the negotiations made by the trading bloc it left in 2020. In February, the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) used this approach to win concessions over the way Apple and Google run their app stores; and this week, as again reported by Reuters, the CMA is proposing to go further. It wants app developers to be able to “steer” users to payment methods other than the ones run by the store owners, and it wants Apple to open up the NFC systems on the iPhone so other companies can use Apple Wallet. Apple has pushed back on the proposals. “When users are directed away from Apple’s trusted payment infrastructure, they lose the protections ​they rely on Apple to provide,” a spokesperson said.

Unfortunately, this proved to be one of the weakest parts of the suite. During testing, website filters repeatedly failed to block sites despite being configured at their highest protection level. Instead of preventing access, Trend Micro frequently displayed warning messages while still allowing the website to load. Similarly, phishing protection produced inconsistent results. Some malicious websites were blocked, but many phishing emails and scam links passed through without warning. DraftKings loading successfully despite a gambling website filter being enabled, demonstrating the shortcomings of the web filtering feature.Foundry Extras (and what’s missing) Camera & Microphone Protection is one of the better features included, generating alerts whenever applications such as FaceTime, Zoom or Photo Booth request access to either device. Scheduling is also well implemented, allowing users to automate scans with considerable flexibility. The logging system is another highlight, allowing scan activity, blocked websites and other security events to be exported as CSV files for later analysis. However, competitors increasingly bundle extras such as VPN services, identity monitoring or more capable parental controls, all of which are absent here. Test Results: How well does it protect your Mac? Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac provided inconsistent protection during our real-world testing. While it successfully detected more than 80% of the malware samples we used, allowing roughly 15% of threats to execute or install is well below the standard expected from modern antivirus software. Trend Micro successfully blocked many common threats and performed particularly well when scanning compressed archives. However, numerous malware components—including samples from BadBunny, CookieMiner, Cosmac Macrocosm, CrateDepression, GetShell, Hovdy, MacInstaller, PokerStealer, Puper, Pymafka, Renepo, SentinelSneak and WildPressure—were allowed to execute or install. A fake Discord application delivered via the LamePyre malware was also successfully installed despite Trend Micro being active. Real-time scanning worked reliably in the background and quarantined many malicious files, but the number of missed threats significantly undermined confidence in the software’s protection. The larger issue was inconsistency. Core protection features – including malware detection, website filtering and phishing protection – worked well enough some of the time, but failed too frequently to inspire confidence. Independent lab results In AV-Test’s March 2026 evaluation of consumer Mac antivirus software on macOS Tahoe 26.3, Trend Micro Antivirus 11.9 scored 16.5/18, earning full marks for Performance and Usability but 4.5/6 for Protection after detecting 98.5% of the Mac malware samples used in testing. This represents a decline from its perfect 18/18 score in AV-Test’s March 2025 evaluation. Trend Micro was not included in AV-Comparatives’ most recent Mac Security Test. Testing evaluated malware detection, phishing protection, website filtering, background performance, scheduled scanning, compressed archive detection and overall usability under macOS Tahoe 26.5. Performance: Will it slow down your Mac? Trend Micro runs reliably in the background during everyday use and remained stable throughout testing, with no crashes or freezes observed. The downside comes during manual scanning. Smart Scans take noticeably longer than competing products, while Full Scans can stretch into multiple hours depending on drive size. Real-world behaviour Background protection has very little impact on day-to-day work and scans can be managed via the macOS menu bar. However, the interface provides only a percentage completion indicator during scans, without any estimate of remaining time or elapsed duration. This makes lengthy scans feel considerably slower than they already are. Users with MacBook models featuring the display notch may also find the menu bar control hidden if multiple menu bar utilities are installed. Key observations Background performance remained smooth. No crashes or stability issues encountered. Smart Scans slower than many competitors. Full Scans often require several hours. No ETA or elapsed scan timer provided. Ease of Use: Is it Mac-friendly? Trend Micro installs quickly and requests the standard Full Disk Access and Network Extension permissions expected of modern macOS antivirus software. The interface is straightforward and logically organised into Overview, Web, Scans, Logs and Scheduling sections. Camera and microphone monitoring is particularly easy to understand, while scheduled scans require very little configuration. Less impressive is the application’s inflexible interface. The main window cannot be resized or maximised, and lengthy scan operations provide surprisingly little feedback beyond a progress percentage. Pricing and plans Trend Micro is competitively priced, particularly during promotional periods, and its free trial is one of the least restrictive available since no payment details are required. That affordability, however, is difficult to justify given the shortcomings in protection. 1 Mac (12 months): $29.95 (normally $39.95) 2 Macs (12 months): $59.95 (normally $79.90) 30-day free trial (no credit or debit card required) Renewal pricing returns to the standard retail price after the introductory discount. Is Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac good value? Trend Micro includes the expected collection of antivirus features and offers one of the easiest trials to evaluate. However, value ultimately depends on effectiveness, and weaker malware detection, unreliable website filtering and inconsistent phishing protection make it difficult to justify paying even the discounted subscription price when competing Mac antivirus suites provide substantially stronger protection. Should You Buy Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac? Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac gets several things right, including its free trial, scheduled scanning, camera and microphone monitoring and compressed archive detection. Unfortunately, antivirus software ultimately succeeds or fails on its ability to stop threats, and this is where the product struggles. Malware detection proved inconsistent, website filtering often failed to block unsafe content, and phishing protection lacked reliability. While the trial is certainly worth exploring if you’re curious, there are significantly stronger Mac antivirus solutions available that offer faster scanning, better protection and considerably greater overall value.

iCloud’s ‘Hide My Email’ might not be hiding your email after all
Macworld A new report by 404 Media states that Apple’s Hide My Email feature contains a vulnerability that can be used to reveal the true email address behind the one that Apple generates for you. The vulnerability, which was found by Tyler Murphy, was reported to Apple last year, and has yet to be fixed. 404 Media did not disclose how the vulnerability can be used, but it did perform its own testing and verified that the actual email address behind one created with Hide My Email was uncovered. Standard practice in the security community is not to disclose any findings until after the vulnerabilities have been fixed, but since it’s been a year, Murphy went public in an effort to pressure Apple to address the problem. A month after he made his initial report to Apple, Murphy was told that an update had provided a fix. But Murphy was able to expose the vulnerability after the supposed patch and provided Apple with more details. Last May, Murphy was told that Apple was still investigating the issue. Hide My Email is a feature of iCloud+ that allows users to create and use an anonymous email address when signing up for online accounts. It’s a popular feature because it allows users not to use their actual email address and maintain an amount of privacy. “If you choose the Hide My Email option, only the app or website you created the account with can use this unique email address to communicate with you,” according to an Apple support document. Emails are still routed to your main iCloud account, but the identity is meant to be hidden. While the vulnerability hasn’t been publicly defined, users should be wary of the effectiveness of Hide My Email. You could continue using it, but know that it might not be completely private. If you’re not convinced Hide My Email is doing its job, you can alternatively create a separate email account at a free online email service such as Gmail or Yahoo for the specific purpose of non-critical logins, and use it until Apple addresses the issue. Perhaps related, Apple announced a recent change to Hide My Email, where the email address created uses @private.icloud.com instead. That’s different from @icloud.com and could allow services to filter the two domains and reject @private.icloud.com from being accepted when an email address is demanded. Apple said the change is coming later this summer.

Dark Cherry is coming soon: See the iPhone 18 Pro’s confirmed new colors
Macworld It’s iPhone leaks season again. In just a couple of months, Apple is expected to unveil three new phones: the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, and a new foldable iPhone now rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra. But as always, one of the most important questions for buyers will be, What colors will Apple release this time? Like last year, Macworld has received information from a source familiar with Apple’s supply chain regarding the color options for the iPhone 18 lineup. We can now reveal an inside look at the colors Apple is planning to release in 2026, along with our own renders to show what to expect. Dark Cherry is the hot new hue Every year, Apple introduces a new signature color for the iPhone Pro models. With the iPhone 17 Pro, the color that stood out the most was the vibrant Cosmic Orange. What about this year’s models? While other sources have previously reported on a “Dark Red” color, the information we’ve heard suggests that Apple has been working on a Dark Cherry option to serve as the headline new color for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Previously, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and other leakers had suggested that Apple has been experimenting with a shade of red for this year’s phones, but we can reveal the hue will be much closer to wine than fruit punch. While Dark Cherry color won’t be as bright and striking as Cosmic Orange in person, it will still be unique enough to distinguish it as the new iPhone 18 Pro. As always, Apple is expected to discontinue the current lineup of colors, including Cosmic Orange. The iPhone 18 Pro could come in three all-new colors.Foundry Apple has also been reportedly experimenting with two other new color options for this year’s Pro lineup. One of them is Light Blue, which would resemble the current Mist Blue color of the base iPhone 17. The other color in development is a dark shade of gray. Finally, our source also reports on the existence of a silver variant of the iPhone 18 Pro, similar to the current generation. Once again, our source notes that the colors are all in development, but since the iPhone 18 Pro hasn’t gone into mass production yet, Apple still has time to change them. Also, bear in mind that Apple doesn’t always offer four color options for the Pro models, so one of these hues could be dropped. Last year, both Macworld and the reliable leaker Sonny Dickson reported that Apple had also considered launching the iPhone 17 Pro in black or steel gray. However, those color options never saw the light of day.  Here are the Pantone color codes our says are being used internally by Apple: Light Blue (Pantone 2121) Dark Cherry (Pantone 6076) Dark Gray (Pantone 426C) Silver (Pantone 427C) We used these codes to generate the image above. Of course, colors may look a bit different in real life due to the material and lighting conditions. Since this report was published, we’ve seen real-world evidence of these colors, specifically the Dark Cherry hue, so we’re confident it will be among the options when the phone arrives in September. A very familiar design with minor changes Macworld’s sources also had access to the CAD drawings of the new iPhones. These documents support the rumors that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will look very similar to their predecessors, with only minor changes. Most notably, the renders show a smaller Dynamic Island on the screen, which has been rumored to be one of the changes for this year’s models. This means the display will have more screen space for content when the Dynamic Island isn’t showing Live Activities. The Dynamic Island could be smaller on the iPhone 18 Pro.Foundry Another interesting change noted by our source is that, in one of the renders, the gap between the glass cutout on the back and the camera bump is a bit smaller. Our source was unable to verify whether this is an old render, or if Apple is moving forward with a design change. Last year, a Weibo leaker known as Instant Digital reported that Apple would adopt a new process to minimize the color difference between the glass and the aluminum frame, so perhaps that change also involves reducing the gap between the glass and the camera bump at some point. More neutral colors for the foldable iPhone We’ve also received details about the color options for the rumored foldable iPhone. The device, which will reportedly look like an iPad mini when unfolded, won’t come in fun colors like the base iPhone and may have even fewer options than the iPhone Pro. For the foldable iPhone, Apple has been working on a classic silver and white model, as well as an Indigo option similar to the iPhone 17 Pro’s Deep Blue. The iPhone Fold will reportedly come in a dark Indigo option.Foundry The source also corroborates leaked CADs and renders showing the potential design of the foldable iPhone, which is expected to feature two rear cameras, a selfie camera on the outer display, and another selfie camera in the upper-left corner of the inner display. The schematics seen by our source reveal that the foldable iPhone will be just 4.7 millimeters thick when unfolded, making it significantly thinner than the 5.6mm iPhone Air. The iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone are all expected to launch in September, while some analysts suggest that the foldable model will hit stores at a later date. The base model of the iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e, and a new Air have been rumored to arrive in the first half of 2027, which has also been confirmed by our source.
