Razer Launches MagSafe-Compatible Laptop Sleeve for Charging Your iPhone and AirPods Razer today introduced a new 16-inch laptop sleeve that has an integrated wireless charging feature for smartphones and other small devices like earbuds. Priced at $130, the sleeve includes two MagSafe-compatible wireless charging zones, so it can charge an iPhone and AirPods at the same time.
The wireless charger is integrated into the top of the laptop sleeve, and the magnets serve as a clasp when the sleeve is closed and being used to transport a laptop. Power is delivered through a USB-C cable that can be plugged into a 30W+ power adapter or a Mac.
Charging speeds are limited to 15W, so you won't get full speed wireless charging on newer iPhones that support up to 25W wireless charging. The sleeve has one 15W charging spot for an iPhone and a 5W charging spot for the AirPods. It is not designed to charge two iPhones at once, both because there's just one 15W charger and because of space constraints.
There is built-in padding to keep a MacBook safe from drops, and a plush lining inside protects it from scratches. The exterior is black and made from a polyester material that's designed to resist wear and tear while also protecting a laptop from rain. Reinforced corners ensure no damage in case of accidental bumps.
The sleeve is sized to fit laptops up to 16 inches, so it works with Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro.
The Razer Laptop Sleeve 16 With Wireless Charging for Devices can be purchased from the Razer website for $130.Tag: RazerThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple-Supported Aliro 1.0 Smart Lock Standard Officially Released The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes Apple, today released the Aliro 1.0 specification. Aliro is a new standard aimed at improving the way that smart door locks work with smartphones and wearables.
Aliro supports interoperability between mobile devices, wearables, and access control readers, so smart locks can work with any smartphone or wearable device without the need for a dedicated app. It is aimed at improving smart locks for the home, but also for corporate offices, universities, and hotels.
Apple, Google, and Samsung support Aliro, and Aliro-enabled locks will be able to be added to wallet apps on iPhone and Android devices. Major smart home companies that produce smart locks have also signed on to support Aliro. The Alliance says that Apple, Allegion, Aqara, Google, HID, Kastle, Kwikset, Last Lock, Nordic Semiconductor, Nuki Home Solutions, NXP Semiconductors, Qorvo, Samsung, and STMicroelectronics will be among the first to achieve Aliro 1.0 certification.
With Aliro, more smart locks should support Apple Home Key for hands-free unlocking with NFC and UWB.
The Aliro 1.0 specification includes a framework for using asymmetric cryptography for secure interactions between user devices and readers, without sacrificing user privacy. It supports multiple communication methods, including NFC, Bluetooth LE, and ultra wideband (UWB).
Aliro will be updated over time to meet new market and ecosystem requirements. Features like secure key sharing will come in the future.Tag: AliroThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple’s low-cost MacBook may skip some features you won’t miss Macworld
Apple will make a special announcement next week, and rumors strongly suggest that we will see a new low-end MacBook that will sit below the MacBook Air. While it’s already taken for granted that this new MacBook will have the A18 Pro iPhone chip inside, there are questions about what else Apple will cut to make this laptop more affordable.
Thanks to inside information from Apple, we may now have a clue as to what customers will be missing out on if they choose the new low-end MacBook.
A closer look at what’s missing
Based on internal files accidentally leaked by Apple last year, which were seen by Macworld, there are some key features that may be left out of the new MacBook. These files came from an internal macOS kernel and include drivers and hardware specifications for unreleased devices.
For instance, the hardware spec sheet for the new low-end MacBook suggests it won’t support high-impedance headphones, as it uses the same audio DAC as the M1 MacBook Air.
The low-cost MacBook appears to be using some internal parts last seen in the M1 MacBook Air.Foundry
High-impedance headphones offer better sound quality and less distortion, which is ideal for audiophiles and professionals. Apple introduced support for this technology on Macs with the M2 chip and later, but apparently, the company decided to use a cheaper audio DAC for its cheaper MacBook.
It also seems that this new MacBook will have a less premium display. The files make no mention of the driver required by the True Tone sensor, which adjusts the display temperature based on ambient light. Instead, this Mac relies on the old sensor that only adjusts the display brightness level based on ambient light. It was first introduced on the iPad in 2016 and has appeared on nearly every Apple display since.
Another thing missing from the files for the new, cheaper MacBook is the “AppleHighVoltageCharger” driver, which essentially enables support for more powerful chargers for faster charging. This means that the low-end MacBook will likely take longer to recharge than the newer MacBooks.
Fast charging support on Apple laptops also came with the M2 MacBooks, so that’s another similarity that the low-end MacBook will have with the M1 MacBook Air.
When it comes to wireless connectivity, the new MacBook is expected to have the same Wi-Fi chip as the A16 iPad, which supports Wi-Fi 6, while the current M4 MacBook Air supports the faster Wi-Fi 6E standard. Customers can also expect standard USB-C rather than Thunderbolt.
One last thing: the new MacBook might lack a backlit keyboard, one of the key features of all MacBooks for many years. While this may disappoint some users, it’s worth remembering that the old plastic MacBook didn’t have a backlit keyboard either, nor does the non-Pro Magic Keyboard for iPad. However, this Mac will likely keep Touch ID for easy and secure authentication.
The cheap MacBook might not have a backlit keyboard.Foundry
Bummer but not a dealbreaker
Although the list of missing features may sound alarming, the reality is that most of these compromises are unlikely to be dealbreakers for the target audience.
This isn’t a MacBook aimed at audio engineers with studio headphones or creative pros who rely on color-accurate displays and high-speed external storage. It’s designed for students, first-time Mac buyers, and everyday users who primarily browse the web, write documents, and stream media.
For these users, this low-end MacBook will offer more than enough power to run everyday tasks, plus a high-resolution display, and wireless connectivity that’s still fast enough for browsing and streaming.
For buyers who need those higher-end capabilities, the MacBook Air remains in the lineup. For everyone else, the new low-end MacBook could represent a more accessible entry into the Mac ecosystem.

New Low-Cost iPad Coming Next Week: What to Expect One of the new products that we could see next week is a refreshed version of the low-cost iPad. As with the iPad Air, we're not expecting major changes, but it is expected to get some meaningful internal upgrades.
Design
The 12th-generation iPad isn't going to get a design update this year, and we're expecting it to have the same 11-inch edge-to-edge display with Touch ID Side Button and thick bezels.
Apple last updated the iPad's design with the 10th-generation model, giving the device a more modern look to better match the designs of the iPad Pro and iPad Air models. It's still a relatively new design, and Apple doesn't update the low-cost iPad's chassis often.
The low-cost iPad is only available in a single screen size, and it is Apple's thickest tablet at 7mm. It features a Retina LCD display with no ProMotion support, no P3 wide color, and no lamination (display technology that cuts down on glare, provides a more responsive feel, and allows for a thinner size) compared to Apple's other tablets.
Apple makes the low-cost iPad in several fun colors, and we could see some new shades in 2026. Current colors include blue, pink, silver, and yellow.
No changes are expected for the rear camera, front camera, USB-C port, or compatibility with accessories like the Apple Pencil.
A-Series Processor
The low-cost iPad will likely be equipped with Apple's A19 chip, which is the chip that Apple used for the iPhone 17. It is built on a 3-nanometer process and it will offer speed and efficiency improvements over the A16 chip that's in the current model.
The A16 chip that Apple used in 2025 does not support Apple Intelligence, but the A19 does, so that will mark a major update for Apple's affordable tablet. The 2026 model should be able to support Apple Intelligence features that are unavailable with the 2025 model.
The A19 also offers hardware-accelerated ray tracing for gaming improvements. The 11th-generation iPad has 6GB RAM, but Apple will need to bump that up to 8GB for Apple Intelligence.
N1 Chip
Apple introduced its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, called the N1, in the iPhone 17 models. The N1 was added to the iPad Pro, and it's possible that Apple plans to add the chip to all future devices coming in 2026 and beyond.
The N1 chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking technology for smart home devices.
The 11th-generation iPad is limited to Wi-Fi 6, so if the 12th-generation version gets Wi-Fi 7, it will be able to connect to faster 6GHz networks for the first time. Bluetooth 6 would also be an improvement over Bluetooth 5.3. There is a chance that Apple is reserving the N1 chip for its more premium devices, based on leaked internal code. If that's the case, the iPad won't include the N1 chip.
Apple Modem
Apple has designed C1 and C1X modem chips that it has used in iPhones and iPads in 2025, and the next-generation version of the iPad could also get an Apple-designed modem chip for cellular models.
Apple's modem chips are more power efficient than Qualcomm chips while providing similar performance.
Pricing
The 11th-generation iPad is priced starting at $349 for 128GB of storage, and there are so far no indications that pricing is going to change for the 12th-generation model.
Launch Date
Apple will likely launch the low-cost iPad sometime next week, just ahead of the Special Experience planned for March 4.Related Roundup: iPadBuyer's Guide: iPad (Don't Buy)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

DRAM Shortage Will Cause 'Seismic Shift' in Smartphone Market, But Apple Will Be Less Affected Global memory scarcity will cause a 13 percent drop in smartphone sales in 2026, according to IDC (via Bloomberg). DRAM is in short supply because AI companies are buying huge quantities of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for servers in data centers, and manufacturers are prioritizing HBM instead of the memory used in consumer devices.
IDC says that the global memory supply has been drained into next year, putting smartphone makers in a tough spot. Prices have spiked because there's not enough memory to meet production needs, which will cause a smartphone market "crisis like no other."
Smartphone makers are expected to ship 1.1 billion devices in 2026, down from 1.26 billion in 2025.
"The tariffs and pandemic crisis seem a joke compared to this," said IDC Senior Research Director Nabila Popal. "The smartphone market will witness a seismic shift by the time this crisis is over -- in size, average selling prices and competitive landscape. We don't expect the situation to ease up until mid-2027, at least."
Cheap Android smartphones will be impacted most heavily by increasing DRAM costs, but Apple is well-positioned to avoid major impact because it focuses on more expensive, premium devices. Apple has more profit margin to work with and is better able to secure available DRAM supply.
Apple is expected to absorb higher memory costs in the short term, but it isn't unaffected by the shortages. Just today, a report suggested Apple is paying Samsung twice as much for the LPDDR5X memory chips that it needs for producing iPhone 17 models.
During Apple's January earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that memory price increases had a "minimal impact" on Apple's gross margin during the 2025 holiday quarter, but the company is expecting a "bit more of an impact" during the first calendar quarter of 2026.
IDC says that even when the DRAM shortage is resolved, memory prices are not expected to return to 2025 levels, so there could be a permanent shift toward higher-priced smartphones.Tag: IDCThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

iPhone and iPad Are First Consumer Devices Cleared for NATO Classified Data Apple's iPhone and iPad running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 have become the first consumer mobile devices cleared for NATO-restricted classified data. No special software or settings are required. MacRumors reports: Apple's devices are the first and only consumer mobile products that have reached this government certification level after security testing and evaluation by the German government. iPhones and iPads running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are now certified for use with classified data in all NATO nations.
In an announcement of the security clearance, Apple touted its security features: "Apple designs security into all of its products from the start, ensuring the most sophisticated protections are built in across hardware, software, and Apple silicon. This unique approach allows Apple users to benefit from industry-leading security protections such as best-in-class encryption, biometric authentication with Face ID, and groundbreaking features like Memory Integrity Enforcement. These same protections are now recognized as meeting stringent government and international security requirements, even for restricted data."

Your iPhone is secure enough to handle classified info Macworld
While we wait for a new iPhone possibly coming next week, Apple has issued a press release to let everyone know that the iPhone and iPad (when running iOS/iPadOS 26 or later) have now been approved by NATO for use with restricted-level information.
The German government previously approved these devices for use with its own classified information. Now, following an audit by the German Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, or BSI), they are approved for such uses in all 32 NATO member nations.
Ivan Krstić, Apple’s vice president of Security Engineering and Architecture, said, “Apple has built the most secure devices in the world for all its users, and those same protections are now uniquely certified under assurance requirements for NATO nations — unlike any other device in the industry.”
Apple says this makes the iPhone and iPad the only consumer devices approved for such use without any special software installed. The security provided by iOS/iPadOS 26 and Apple’s hardware alone is sufficient when using the appropriate options enabled. Handling classified information typically requires bespoke devices, custom operating systems, or additional custom security software.
iPhone is secure enough for classified NATO secrets right out of the box The iPhone and iPad can securely handle classified information up to the NATO Restricted level without needing special software.

These Apple ‘magic moments’ show how well macOS and iPadOS work together [Video] I have been a hardcore iPad user for almost a decade now. I have used it as my main computer and dealt with all the ups and downs. But one of the biggest misconceptions about the iPad is that it is trying to compete with the MacBook when, in reality, they were built to work in tandem. It is not until you have them side by side that you start to see the magic and power that is the Apple walled garden. Features like Universal Control, Sidecar, Handoff, and continuity tools create “aha” moments that genuinely change how you work. So I wanted to put a list together of some of those amazing magic ecosystem moments that iPadOS and MacOS give you together.

Apple Releases Xcode 26.3 With Support for AI Agents From Anthropic and OpenAI After several weeks of testing, Apple today released Xcode 26.3, an update that allows developers to use tools like Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex for app creation directly in Xcode.
With support for agentic coding, Xcode can complete more complex app development tasks autonomously. Apple worked with Anthropic and OpenAI to configure their agents for use in Xcode and to ensure that AI models can access a full range of Xcode features.
Agents are able to create new files, examine code structure of a project, build a project directly and run tests, take image snapshots to check their work, and access Apple's full, up-to-date developer documentation.
Along with OpenAI and Anthropic models, Xcode 26.3 is compatible with any agent or tool that uses the open standard Model Context Protocol.
Xcode 26.3 is available for download today from Apple's developer website.Tag: XcodeThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple’s iPhone and iPad become the first – and only – devices approved to handle classified NATO information Apple's iPhone and iPad are the first and only consumer devices in compliance with the information assurance requirements of NATO nations…

iPhone and iPad Are First Consumer Devices Cleared for NATO Classified Data The iPhone and iPad can be used with NATO restricted level classified information after meeting NATO's information assurance requirements, Apple said today. No special software or settings are required.
Apple's devices are the first and only consumer mobile products that have reached this government certification level after security testing and evaluation by the German government. iPhones and iPads running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are now certified for use with classified data in all NATO nations.
In an announcement of the security clearance, Apple touted its security features.
Apple designs security into all of its products from the start, ensuring the most sophisticated protections are built in across hardware, software, and Apple silicon. This unique approach allows Apple users to benefit from industry-leading security protections such as best-in-class encryption, biometric authentication with Face ID, and groundbreaking features like Memory Integrity Enforcement. These same protections are now recognized as meeting stringent government and international security requirements, even for restricted data.
Apple's vice president of security Ivan Krstić said the achievement reflects Apple's commitment to security.
This achievement recognizes that Apple has transformed how security is traditionally delivered. Prior to iPhone, secure devices were only available to sophisticated government and enterprise organizations after a massive investment in bespoke security solutions. Instead, Apple has built the most secure devices in the world for all its users, and those same protections are now uniquely certified under assurance requirements for NATO nations -- unlike any other device in the industry.

Upcoming Apple Announcements Likely to Focus on Chip Refreshes Apple's imminent series of announcements will focus on chip updates, rather than redesigned devices, according to a known leaker.
In a new post, the Weibo leaker known as "Fixed Focus Digital" said Apple's scheduled announcements for next week focus on refreshed devices with basic generational chip upgrades, rather than more fundamental redesigns.
Earlier this month, Apple invited the media to an "Apple Experience" in New York, London, and Shanghai on Wednesday, March 4 at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. Today, Apple CEO Tim Cook teased "a big week ahead," with announcements starting Monday.
Successors to the iPhone 16e, entry-level iPad, iPad Air, M4 MacBook Air, M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro, Apple TV, and HomePod are all rumored to arrive soon, offering little more than chip refreshes. The most significant new device in the immediate pipeline is the low-cost MacBook, which is set to feature an iPhone's A-series chip. Little is known about what the machine will look like beyond offering a 12.9-inch LCD display and a selection of fun color options, and there's a high chance it will re-use components from existing devices.
Apple devices with major new designs are still expected to arrive this year, such as the first foldable iPhone, a smart home hub product, and the M6-series MacBook Pro, but largely not until the second-half of the year.Tag: Fixed Focus DigitalThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The Mac Studio comes with M-series Max and Ultra chips, and we can use the release of the base M-series chip to get an idea of when the Mac Studio will be updated. Apple releases the base M-series chip first (usually in the MacBook Pro) and then follows with the M-series Max and Ultra Mac Studio a few months later.
The most recent base M-series chip is the M5, which was released in the MacBook Pro in October 2025. So that generation of chip will likely make its appearance in the new Mac Studio in the first half of 2026.
According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio are on Apple’s release schedule for 2026. Two of the three Mac Studio releases since it was introduced occurred in March, with the 2023 M2 Max/Ultra Mac Studio released in June at WWDC. So look for an M5 Mac Studio release in the March to June timeframe.
With Apple inviting media to “Special Experiences” at three locations on March 4, there is a possibility that the new Mac Studio is one of the new products being showcased at this Apple March event, however, on February 8, Gurman reported that the new Mac Studio “shouldn’t arrive too long after the spring Mac refresh,” indicating that it may not happen in conjunction with the March 4 Experiences.
2026 Mac Studio: Processor
Expected to have M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips
Apple
The 2025 Mac Studio was a complete surprise. It was introduced with an M4 Max chip, which was expected, but the highest-end version shipped with an M3 Ultra rather than an M4 Ultra. The M3 Ultra is technically faster than the M4 Max, but it’s an older chip. Apple has not explained the reasoning for this.
The next Mac Studio will not have this staggered chip configuration, according to reports. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that Apple will offer M5 Max and M5 Ultra for the next Mac Studio.
MacRumors reported in December 2025 that references to the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio appeared in a set of leaked Apple files.
The M5 Ultra is expected to significantly outperform the M3 Ultra chips, with major boosts in CPU and GPU performance.
2026 Mac Studio: Specs
New separate CPU and GPU blocks for customization
Standard configurations of 36GB and 96GB of RAM
Thunderbolt 5
The major change with the Mac Studio’s specs is going to be with the chip itself. Apple is completely redesigning how it works, according to an October 2025 report by MaxTech’s Vadim Yuryev. The M5 Pro and M5 Max will feature the CPU and GPU on separate blocks, which would allow customers more options to configure these components. For example, one could set up a base CPU configuration with a maxed-out GPU. While Yuryev did not specifically mention the M5 Ultra, it stands to reason that the Ultra chip will also feature this new block configuration.
The rest of the specifications are not expected to change. It will likely start with 36GB of RAM for the M5 Max, and 96GB of RAM for the M5 Ultra, and SSDs up to 8TB or 16TB. The current Mac Studio comes with Thunderbolt 5, and this should continue with the new model.
2026 Mac Studio: Design
No design changes expected
The Mac Studio made its debut in 2022, so it’s only three years old. Apple is expected to stick with the same design, which is also reflected in the M4 Mac mini, as no reports have been made about the design.
Also said to be coming is a new Studio Display monitor which will probably launch in the same time-frame.
Foundry
The port offerings are also expected to remain the same. The Mac Studio has:
M-series Max model: 2 front USB-C ports (supporting USB 3 at 10Gbps)
M-series Ultra model: 2 front Thunderbolt 5 ports
front SDHX Card slot
rear 3.5mm audio jack
4 rear Thunderbolt 5 ports
2 rear USB-A ports
HDMI port
10Gb ethernet port
2026 Mac Studio: Price
Here are the prices for the current standard base configurations of the 2025 Mac Studio for reference:
$1,999/£2,099/CA$2,699/AU$3,499 M4 Max, 36GB Unified Memory, 512GB SSD
$3,999/£4,199/CA$5,499/AU$6,999 M3 Ultra, 96GB Unified Memory, 1TB SSD
Pricing for the new Mac Studio has not been reported, though pricing could go up because of the U.S. tariffs situation–the components are made overseas. The prices may be adapted to more recent exchange rates elsewhere.

Apple teases ‘big week ahead’ starting Monday Macworld
Tim Cook today announced what he describes as a “big week” for Apple, starting on Monday.
“A big week ahead,” he said in a brief post on Twitter/X (using his personal account rather than the main company one, which is very rarely used). “It all starts Monday morning!”

Apple had previously sent out invitations to “special experiences” in New York, London, and Shanghai on March 4, which falls in the middle of next week. This post appears to confirm that, rather than being a one-off event, March 4 will form the centerpiece of several days of releases. Other sources have predicted that we’ll see at least five new products across multiple announcements.
The phrase “a big week” implies, at least to me, a full five days of announcements, but that might not be what we get. Based on a previous “exciting week,” back in October 2024, new Mac announcements were made on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday only. So the week might be finished by March 4.
In his tweet, the Apple CEO also uses the company’s usual hashtag #AppleLaunch, which now shows up with a tiny version of the artwork from those recent invitations: a yellowy green version of the Apple logo. This is known as a Hashflag or Hashmoji, a system where companies pay Twitter to attach a specific emoji to a particular hashtag for promotional purposes. Historically, it was turned into an animated emoji that appears when you like a tweet with the hashtag on the event day.
The final element of the tweet is a short looped video. It shows what is initially a blank flat metal surface, on which a hand creates the Apple logo through a series of gestures: waving to place the approximate shape, pinching in the top and bottom, thumb-swiping the leaf, and flicking away the bite. It ends up as the reflective Apple logo seen on the backs of numerous products, including the iPhone. The scale of this one hints at a Mac, although it could also be an iPad.
Which makes sense, because both MacBooks and iPads are expected to be announced next week. We’re hoping to get a new entry-level iPad and iPad Air, and there’s huge anticipation for a budget MacBook based around a mobile processor.
We’ll probably hear about the iPhone 17e too. But the tweet doesn’t hint at that product, so perhaps it’ll be given a bit less attention than the new MacBook.

Hide dictation (microphone) button in custom iOS keyboard extension I’m developing a custom keyboard extension using UIInputViewController. When my keyboard is active on iOS 16+, the system places a dictation (microphone) button at the bottom-right corner of the keyboard area, outside of my extension's view.
I want to completely hide or remove this dictation button while my custom keyboard is in-use.
The button appears to be injected by the system at the host app level, not within the keyboard extension's own view, the button also only appears on iOS 16+ and later. On iOS 15 and earlier, custom keyboards did not have the issue.
How can I hide or remove the system dictation button when my custom keyboard is active? Is there a specific Info.plist key, API, or entitlement that controls this?

Samsung’s Privacy Display is the best iPhone feature Apple never made Macworld
At a time when our smartphones store banking apps, passwords, personal messages, and other sensitive data, privacy screen protectors have become a must for many users. These third-party add-ons rely on micro-louver technology to restrict the viewing angle of the display, limiting visibility from the sides. This makes it difficult for bystanders to see on-screen content at an angle, as the light emits in a controlled, forward-facing direction.
During its Unpacked event earlier this week, Samsung revealed its Galaxy S26 line. As you’d expect from phone manufacturers at this point, the keynote heavily revolved around performance gains and AI features. Perhaps the most jaw-dropping highlight, however, was the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s new Privacy Display, which mimics the aforementioned screen protectors natively. If Apple truly cares about iPhone users’ privacy, it needs to steal this ingenious invention as soon as possible.
How Privacy Display works
So, did Samsung just pre-install a privacy screen protector on the Galaxy S26 Ultra to save its customers $20? Far from it. Privacy Display does not rely on an external layer or filter to achieve the intended goal. It has been engineered on the pixel level, dictating how the screen emits light in the first place.
Smartphone displays are typically made up of wide pixels, which emit light outward in multiple directions. This enables you to view on-screen content even when you’re not strictly facing the device. Here’s where Samsung applied its magic.
Samsung’s Privacy Display limits the field of view for sensitive content on your phone.Samsung
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the first smartphone to feature what Samsung calls the Black Matrix. Marketing lingo aside, the technology essentially narrows a pixel’s light path using a ring, directing more of the light forward—rather than allowing it to scatter outward. This produces a narrow pixel that behaves in a restricted manner.
To make the feature dynamic, Samsung had to incorporate both wide and narrow pixels in its latest flagship phone. When Privacy Display is on, narrow pixels become the primary source of light, reducing visibility from an angle. Toggling it off enables both pixel types to work in tandem, restoring regular light emission. To see it in action is truly mind-blowing.
Why Privacy Display wins
Now, you may be wondering why iPhone users should care about Privacy Display when screen protectors can seemingly achieve similar results for just a few bucks. Mainly, Samsung’s implementation is neither permanent nor universal. You can toggle the feature on or off using the Quick Panel (Samsung’s Control Center) or tie it to daily schedules or routines.
For example, the screen can behave normally when you’re at home and switch to private mode when you’re out and about. More importantly, you can have Privacy Display conceal specific portions of the screen, such as incoming notifications, banking apps, password fields, etc. This maintains your phone’s proper illumination while still blocking others from viewing private content of your choosing.
The S26 Ultra can customize when Privacy Display appears.Samsung
It is also worth noting that privacy screen protectors come with a few caveats. For starters, they make the screen a little thicker and tend to dim the brightness and alter the colors’ accuracy. They can also make the screen less responsive to touch input and interfere with some features. Samsung’s implementation achieves similar results while maintaining the image quality and the phone’s functionality. Once it becomes a default on all smartphones in the coming years, no one will want to look back.
The innovation race
Apple’s unwillingness to take risks is slowing down its innovation. Even as an iPhone enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge how mundane Apple’s product launches have generally become. Despite maintaining its status as a trendsetter, Apple has been lagging behind its competitors in terms of breakthrough technology and features. Sure, it is doing wonders with its silicon, but performance means little when the rest of the device is so tediously uninspiring. Privacy Display is objectively an actual, transformative screen innovation in a way the iPhone 18 Pro’s smaller Dynamic Island won’t be.
Apple continues to casually dominate gaming Macworld
Apple might not always seem to understand PC gamers, but it remains a hugely dominant force in that market. Newly published research shows that in 2025, the App Store made significantly more money from games than the other two major platforms combined.
According to SensorTower’s State of Gaming 2026 report, which recounts key findings from the previous year and predicts what we can expect in this one, the App Store made gross revenue of $52.5 billion in 2025, compared to just $30 billion for Google’s Play Store and $11.7 billion for Valve’s Steam platform. Steam is doing its best to catch up–its revenue was up 13 percent on the previous year, whereas Google and Apple saw growth of just 2.8 percent and 0.6 percent respectively—but Apple retains its massive lead in the market.
(Just as a note on methodology: SensorTower says its revenue figures for the App Store and Google Play are based on IAPs within games rather than the cost of the games themselves, presumably because the vast majority of apps sold are free. They include both the money made by the games publisher and the percentage skimmed off by the platform holder.)
Interestingly, while Apple is ahead on revenue, it’s a long way behind on volume. SensorTower reports that a whopping 81 percent of downloads in 2025 were on Google Play (that’s all games, not just mobile), compared to 15 percent for Apple’s App Store. The difference is that iPhone owners are far more likely to spend money.
Services, the category of revenue which includes the App Store along with subscription services such as Apple Music and, relevantly to this discussion, Apple Arcade, is a cherished source of income for Apple because it scales so efficiently. There aren’t supply issues when the product is purely digital, and as such, Services is the company’s second-largest revenue generator after the iPhone, and topped S30 billion in the last quarter.
All of which should explain why Apple is so reluctant to allow developers to direct users through their own payment systems in order to reduce or avoid the App Store revenue cut.
A few years back a court ordered the company to allow “buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to [external] purchasing mechanisms,” but its response was to place a fee on purchases made outside the App Store as well as on those made within. This policy, which calls to mind an old Onion article about American Airlines charging non-passengers, did not go down well with the judge. But you can kind of see why they were tempted to try.
RAM supply is so tight, Samsung may be charging Apple double Apple has reportedly agreed to pay Samsung double what it used to for DRAM chips, the memory used in iPhones and Macs — even though it may not have needed to just yet.Examples of older DRAM modules — image credit: SamungMassive worldwide demand for AI servers has meant all manufacturers having a hard time securing what they need in memory, storage, and processors. It's also meant Apple losing its previous ability to negotiate low prices and long-term deals. The latest example of the pressures Apple and others are under concerns buying DRAM supplies from Samsung. I still own power banks that I struggle to grip in one hand. Such items lurk in the bottom of a cupboard awaiting only the end of days rather than a long train journey or city break vacation.
Batteries have been getting smaller for years, but recent advances have slimmed phone power banks to shirt-pocket size.
Solid-state electrolytes are replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with more stable, efficient materials that allow for smaller, more compact, and safer battery designs. While we haven’t tested any fully solid-state power banks, we have been seeing semi-solid-state cells where flammable liquid is reduced to a fraction of that found in standard lithium-ion batteries.
It’s not all about size—these batteries are safer and should last significantly longer with a greater number of cycles before the battery degrades.
BMX
Size matters: How thin is it compared to other Qi2 power banks?
But size does matter when you’re carrying the power bank in your pocket or backpack.
BMX, not the little trick bicycle ridden by kids and hipsters but a company called Better Mobile Xperience, has just released a new magnetic wireless power bank that it claims is the “world’s thinnest” 5,000mAh Qi2 power bank.
The SolidSafe Air 5K doesn’t stray far from the usual length and width of today’s magnetic wireless power banks (4.1 x 2.8 inches / 103 x 70mm), but when it comes to depth (or height, however you look at it) it is truly tiny at just 0.27 inches (6.8mm).
In comparison, the iPhone Air is only slightly thinner at 5.6mm, with a 3149mAh (12.4Wh) battery capacity.
While we haven’t tested every single wireless power bank model that exists, we pride ourselves in checking out all those from our most trusted power brands, including Anker, Ugreen, Belkin, EcoFlow, Baseus, Kuxiu, ESR, Statik and more.
The margin might be coming down in size, but the SolidSafe Air 5K does indeed live up to BMX’s claim.
The closest we have measured in terms of slimness are:
BMX SolidSafe Air 5K: 6.8mm
Anker Nano 5K MagGo Slim: 8.6mm
Vonmählen Evergreen Mag 5000mAh: 8.6mm
PhoneSuit Elite Mag Slim 5K: 8.9mm
Baseus PicoGo Ultra-Slim 5K: 8.9mm
Kuxiu S2 5K (also semi-solid state): 10mm
Infinacore M3 Mini 5K: 10.6mm
Clearly, the SolidSafe Air is the thinnest 5K magnetic wireless power bank that we have tested.

Weight matters too
What about its weight? When it’s on your person or in the bag you are carrying, weight is as important as size; if not more. The SolidSafe Air weighs 4.1oz (116g); to compare, the iPhone Air weighs 165g.
Let’s compare that to our other slim power banks mentioned above.
BMX SolidSafe Air 5K: 4.1oz (116g)
Anker Nano 5K MagGo Slim: 4.3oz (122g)
Vonmählen Evergreen Mag 5000mAh: 4.34oz (123g)
PhoneSuit Elite Mag Slim 5K: 3.88oz (110g)
Baseus PicoGo Ultra-Slim 5K: 3.77oz (107g)
Kuxiu S2 5K (also semi-solid state): 6.14oz (174g)
Infinacore M3 Mini 5K: 3.88oz (110g)
The SolidSafe Air is therefore not the lightest power bank we’ve tested. That honor goes to the Baseus PicoGo Ultra-Slim.
However, we don’t think 0.32oz or 9g is going to be noticeable by anything other than a set of precision scales.

Design: Does the slim design affect battery life or charging speed?
The SolidSafe Air is so thin that the magnetic coil must be raised a little from the otherwise flat surface of the power bank.
Looking at the distance between the USB-C charging port and the sides makes me think it will be nearly impossible to get any thinner—but, fear not, someone will.
BMX
It’s available in a choice of three colors: Titanium Gold, Titanium Black, and Titanium Silver. Add in a Sky Blue model and the iPhone Air models would all be matched. BMX has certainly tried to create a power bank thin enough for the iPhone Air users.
The battery indicator is the standard set of four LEDs to let you know how much power is left in the power bank’s battery. One of the thinnest power banks we’ve reviewed is the PhoneSuit Elite Mag Slim 5K, and this boasts a digital percentage display, which is far more accurate, but such display on a 5K power bank is are, and to its credit, the SolidSafe Air’s LEDs are brighter than most.
The SolidSafe Air is reinforced with titanium to make it more durable against impact. That combined with the safer semi-solid electrolytes should make the power bank inherently safer than most power banks.
Semi-solid-state cell technology reducing flammable liquid content improves thermal stability and lowers fire risk compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. It should also mean the SolidSafe Air can be charged, discharged and recharged many more times than a traditional lithium-ion power bank.
Performance also matters
The 5000mAh (milliamp hour) battery is rated at 18.5Wh (watt hours). This is the sweet spot for a power bank that is lightweight and slim but still has enough capacity to offer a decent iPhone recharge. Remember the iPhone Air’s battery capacity is 3149mAh (12.4Wh). The closer match is the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 5088mAh (20Wh) battery. Find out your iPhone’s battery capacity in our long list.
We test power banks by running down an iPhone 16 Pro to 0% and seeing to what percentage the power bank can take the phone’s battery. In this test the BMX SolidSafe Air 5K achieved an impressive score of 89%, among the highest of all the magnetic wireless power banks we have had in the Macworld Labs.

The SolidSafe Air employs the Qi2 magnetic charging technology, so can supply up to 15W of power wirelessly.
Some larger 10K power banks—such as the Kuxiu K1, Baseus PicoGo 25W 10K, Ugreen MagFlow and Sharge Icemag 3—use the newer Qi2.2 tech that can handle 25W for compatible iPhones (iPhone 16 and later). 25W should charge an iPhone (16 or later) from 0-50% in around half an hour, while 15W takes about 45 minutes. We are still waiting for a 5K power bank that is as fast as 25W.
Use the charging port with a cable (USB-C to USB-C for iPhone 15 and later, USB-C to Lightning for older iPhones) to gain a little faster 20W of power. A neat function is simultaneous wired (using a cable in the power bank’s charging port) and wireless charging. Via this method you get 10W wired plus 12W wireless for 22W power—not so far off the 25W that Qi2.2 would have supplied.
The power bank itself is charged at up to 15W, which is quite slow in comparison to others that have input speeds of between 18-30W. if charging overnight or not in a hurry, this shouldn’t matter. A full recharge of the power bank should take around 2 hours.

Should you buy the BMX SolidSafe Air 5K Solid-State Qi2 Power Bank
The titanium SolidSafe Air is wafer-thin and can slip into a shirt pocket without worrying the stitching. You can charge your iPhone (12 and later) wirelessly at 15W or 22W when using both wired and wireless outputs, which is fast. There are power banks that recharge themselves faster, and power banks with smarter battery displays, but the BMX SolidSafe Air is easily the slimmest semi-solid-state 5K Qi2 power bank you can buy—indeed, in our experience, it’s the slimmest magnetic wireless power bank full stop.
