After this week’s controversial decision by 1Password to raise its subscription prices by an extra dollar a month — its first price increase in a decade — the tech community has been losing its mind. Many critics on X are calling the 33% hike unjustified, frequently citing Apple’s free Passwords app as a primary reason to jump ship. While I do think Passwords is a fine option for most people, there are still many ways 1Password continues to have a leg up.

HomeKit Weekly: This Matter smart bulb brings lighting control to Apple Home for under $10 I have been a Philips Hue user for a number of years. They are rock solid, but they aren’t cheap. Recently, one of the bulbs in my hallway finally gave up the ghost. Instead of dropping $45 on a replacement, I decided to look at what the “Matter era” has brought to the table in terms of Wi-Fi only bulbs. I found a Matter-native option that costs less than $10 per bulb. It connects directly over Wi-Fi, requires no hub outside of a HomePod/Apple TV, and works with Apple Home right out of the box.

The global RAM and SSD shortage crisis, explained A global shortage is responsible for every electronics and computer manufacturer in the world — including Apple — paying twice as much for RAM and flash storage as it did in 2025, and 10 times more than it paid in 2020. Here's why there is little hope of that improving anytime soon.Memory is in short supply globally — Image credit: SK HynixApple has historically been able to closely control the cost of its components. Buying in huge numbers, from multiple suppliers has historically given an economy of scale that made Apple a sought-after customer for everything from display makers to storage vendors. But that dynamic has changed. A global shortage of key components like memory and storage has seen the price of both skyrocket. Apple is far from the only company impacted. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

MacRumors Giveaway: Win an iPhone 17 and an Anti-Reflective Fresh Coat Screen Protector From Astropad For this week's giveaway, we've teamed up with Astropad to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win an iPhone 17 and an anti-reflective Fresh Coat screen protector from Astropad to go along with it.
Fresh Coat is a screen protector that Astropad created with an optical-grade anti-reflective coating to reduce glare and provide a better iPhone viewing experience. The technology cuts reflections by 75 percent, while improving contrast and keeping colors vibrant. Unlike other anti-reflective screen protectors on the market, Fresh Coat adds no haze or distortion to the iPhone's display.
Priced at $30, Fresh Coat is made from a scratch-proof tempered glass that provides protection for the iPhone's display in addition to cutting down on glare and reflections. It's slim and doesn't add bulk to the iPhone even though there are five layers of protective technology at work. From the top down, there's an anti-reflective coating, an oleophobic and hydrophobic coating, a layer of tempered glass, a dust barrier, and an impact-resistant "airbag" bonding.
If you have an iPhone 17, it comes with an anti-reflective coating added by Apple. What you might not know is that you can't use just any screen protector with the iPhone 17. If you put a regular screen protector without an anti-reflective coating on, it nullifies the anti-reflective properties of that added coating.
Since Fresh Coat has its own anti-reflective coating, it improves on Apple's included anti-reflective layer, reducing glare even further. With Fresh Coat, the iPhone's screen is easy to see in any lighting conditions, there's less eye strain, and if you use Dark Mode, it looks even darker.
If you don't have an iPhone 17, Fresh Coat can provide an iPhone 17-style display upgrade, mirroring Apple's own reflection-reducing display coating. Fresh Coat is available for all iPhone 17 models, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
Astropad designed an installation process that's impossible to mess up, so you get perfect alignment on your iPhone without the hassle that comes with most screen protectors.
We have an iPhone 17 in white and a Fresh Coat screen protector for one lucky MacRumors reader. To enter to win, use the widget below and enter an email address. Two More Studio Display 2 Upgrades Leaked in New Report Macworld's Filipe Espósito today again reported that Apple appears to be developing two new Studio Display models with different specs.
Based on lines of code in "internal Apple files," which likely refers to a macOS Tahoe Kernel Debug Kit that leaked online last year, Espósito continues to believe that both of the new Studio Display models will feature ProMotion, enabling up to a 120Hz refresh rate, as well as HDR support for increased brightness and dynamic range.
For the higher-end Studio Display, the report has revealed two more potential upgrades that had yet to be rumored until now, including superior speakers and more and/or higher-spec ports. Apple says the current Studio Display has a "high-fidelity six-speaker system" that supports Spatial Audio, and the monitor has one Thunderbolt 3 port that connects to and charges a Mac, and three USB-C ports for connecting accessories.
The new Studio Display will likely feature at least one Thunderbolt 5 port, to ensure there is enough bandwidth for both 5K resolution at 120Hz and accessories. However, another leaker curiously claimed that at least one of the new Studio Display models will max out at 90Hz, so we will have to see which of these rumors is accurate. A boost to the current 60Hz refresh rate would make videos and scrolling look smoother to the eye.
Espósito said that the higher-end Studio Display could have a 32-inch screen, whereas the lower-end model would likely stick with a 27-inch screen. However, this particular claim was merely speculation, rather than info from the internal Apple files.
Display industry expert Ross Young previously said that at least one new Studio Display would feature mini-LED backlighting. If so, perhaps Apple will opt to discontinue its Pro Display XDR with full-array LED backlighting and instead offer both lower-end and higher-end Studio Display configurations. But again, this is just speculation.
Another previously-rumored feature for at least one of the new Studio Display models is an A19 or A19 Pro chip, up from the A13 Bionic chip in the current model. This would contribute to improved performance, camera enhancements, and more.
Altogether, the full set of Studio Display upgrades could include a higher 120Hz refresh rate, HDR support for increased brightness and contrast ratio, improved speakers, Thunderbolt 5 support, mini-LED backlighting, a newer A19 or A19 Pro chip for performance and camera enhancements, and hopefully a larger 32-inch screen.
No major design changes are expected.
Apple reportedly plans to release the new Studio Display models in the first half of 2026. The current Studio Display launched in March 2022, alongside the first Mac Studio, so there has been a long wait for a refresh. With a new Apple monitor surfacing in a regulatory database last month, a launch should finally be getting close.Related Roundups: Apple Pro Display XDR, Apple Studio DisplayTag: MacworldRelated Forum: Mac AccessoriesThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple TV's Second-Largest Market Is Brazil, Says Eddy Cue Apple's SVP of services Eddy Cue has revealed that Brazil is Apple TV's second-largest market by subscriber count and its fastest-growing, in an interview with Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo (via 9to5Mac).
Speaking on the sidelines of Apple's recent media event in Santa Monica where the company previewed its 2026 content slate, Cue acknowledged that Apple has yet to produce any original content in Brazil. Competitors like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney, meanwhile, have turned the country into a major production hub, leaving Apple in catch-up mode.
"It doesn't move as quickly as I'd like, especially if you want to be truly good, but we'll get there," Cue said. "I know Brazilians want quality – I appreciate that – and I also know there's a lot of opportunity in Brazil to create strong content."Cue also reaffirmed Apple's commitment to theatrical releases through distribution partnerships, pointing to the success of "F1: The Movie," which was released in theaters by Warner Bros. and went on to earn an Oscar nomination. Cue conceded that "the bar for leaving home and going to the movie theater" is getting increasingly higher, but he believes the experience remains irreplaceable.
"There's no substitute for that experience – for watching a film collectively, going on a date at the movies, enjoying a night out with friends or children watching a film," Cue said. "It's something truly unique, and I believe it will become even more valuable over time."At the time of the interview, Netflix was still in the running to acquire Warner Bros. Asked whether a potential deal could complicate Apple's theatrical distribution arrangements, Cue was unconcerned. "We have a great relationship with the Netflix team – I've known them for a long time – and the same is true of our relationship with Warner," he said. "I know Ted [Sarandos – Netflix CEO] very well. Well enough to believe we'll continue working together in the future."
Netflix has since dropped out of the bidding, with Paramount now widely expected to win ownership of Warner Bros. following regulatory approval. Meanwhile, Apple has struck a U.S. partnership with Netflix to bring the complete latest season of Formula 1: Drive to Survive to Apple TV.
A March 2025 report by The Information revealed that Apple TV subscriptions grew to around 45 million in 2024, but it was still losing more than $1 billion annually. The company has spent more than $5 billion a year on content since the service launched in 2019, but this was reduced by $500 million in 2024 in response to a push for cutbacks from Apple CEO Tim Cook and other executives.Tags: Apple TV, Brazil, Eddy CueThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

A smartphone storm is coming, but Apple already built a shelter Macworld
It’s common knowledge that the smartphone market is not in a good place right now. But new research has revealed the unprecedented severity of the problem, the likely timeframe before things get better, and the one company that’s best placed to survive the ordeal. Spoiler: it’s Apple.
According to analysts at IDC (via Bloomberg), the global memory shortage will cause the smartphone market to shrink by 12.9% in 2026. That’s a shortfall of roughly 160 million units that were sold last year and won’t be sold this year, a situation the research firm characterised as “a crisis like no other.” And most of the impact will be felt by companies making cheap Android handsets.
The problem is related to AI, which is sucking up resources that would otherwise be available for phone manufacturers and causing prices for memory to spike. Budget phones have very slim profit margins, so their makers are unable to absorb the cost increases; instead they have to compromise on component choices or put up their prices. And the market is so competitive, and price such a high priority for customers in that space, that this inevitably results in lower sales.
“The tariffs and pandemic crisis seem a joke compared to this,” said Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC. “The smartphone market will witness a seismic shift by the time this crisis is over, in size, average selling prices and competitive landscape.”
Popal added that the situation is unlikely to improve until mid-2027, at the earliest. And even then, things won’t go back to the way they were. “The days of cheap smartphones are gone, as even when the crisis is over, we don’t expect memory prices to go back down to 2025 levels,” she explained.
It’s fortunate for Apple, then, that it got out of the budget smartphone market at what increasingly looks to have been the perfect time. Until last spring, the company sold a single cheap phone, the $429 iPhone SE, alongside its premium iPhone 16, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max models. But it replaced this with the $599 iPhone 16e and has never looked back. (In terms of intent, at least. It’s debatable whether the 16e has matched the popularity of the SE handsets.) In a matter of days, we expect the company to launch the iPhone 17e at a similar price point.
Apple and its iPhone range, which ranges from the mid-market to the premium end (and with the launch of the iPhone Fold, is expected to enter the extreme premium market) is therefore better placed than most to weather the storm. But it isn’t immune, as the company itself has acknowledged. In its most recent earnings report, Tim Cook said RAM price increases did not affect Apple in Q1 2026, but admitted the company is now “in a supply chase mode,” and experiencing supply constraints like the rest of the industry.

Apple testing a Studio Display with high-end ports and speakers Macworld
It’s no secret that Apple is working on a new generation of its Studio Display with ProMotion and HDR, but it may not be just one model. After taking a deeper look at internal Apple files, Macworld has found evidence that suggests there are actually two separate models in development.
Last year, we reported that code in a pre-release build of iOS 26 referenced a new external display identified as “J527,” a codename previously linked to a second-generation Studio Display. That same code pointed to major upgrades such as 120Hz ProMotion and HDR support. Earlier this month, also spotted references to a second model, J427, in the macOS 26.3 code, but it was unclear what the differences were.
Now, a fresh analysis of related system files reveals the two models are indeed separate displays with distinctly different features.
A split strategy for Studio Display 2
The existence of both J427 and J527 in Apple’s internal files strongly suggests that the next Studio Display may come in two configurations. While both appear to share the same core display capabilities, there are some interesting differences referenced in the firmware.
Specifically, each monitor has different audio drivers, implying that the speakers are different. The exact differences are unclear, but Apple may have decided to include better speakers in a higher-end version of its monitor. The current Studio Display includes a high-fidelity six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers and support for spatial audio, the same found in the MacBook Pro, but a high-end system could support audio closer to HomePod.
The next Studio Display could get an audio upgrade.Foundry
Another difference we noticed is that the J527 version supports more I/O controllers than the J427. The current Studio Display has three USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports and one Thunderbolt 3 port. Presumably, the higher-end Studio Display will have more advanced ports, while the base model will keep the current ones.
Interestingly, the J427 version of the monitor is internally labeled as a “2025” product, while J527 is a “2026” product. Perhaps Apple originally planned to introduce these monitors separately, or the higher-end version of the Studio Display may still arrive at a later date.
The higher-end features would likely be part of a model with a larger screen as well. It would be odd to sell two 27-inch displays with slightly different speakers and ports, but a 32-inch model that also has upgraded audio and expansion makes more sense
An announcement could be right around the corner
Apple has teased a week of special announcements, starting on Monday. Rumors strongly suggest that a new low-end MacBook will be the centerpiece of this announcement, along with the M4 iPad Air, M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pros, and the iPhone 17e. But there has been persistent evidence that new desktop Macs and displays are coming soon as well, so it’s possible the new Studio Displays arrive sooner than later.

Apple Asks Judge to Toss Fraud Claims Over Siri AI, Epic Compliance Apple has asked a federal judge to dismiss a proposed class action lawsuit accusing the company of defrauding shareholders by overstating Siri's Apple Intelligence capabilities and misrepresenting its compliance with the Epic Games App Store injunction.
At WWDC in June 2024, Apple previewed two of Siri's most anticipated Apple Intelligence upgrades – personal context and onscreen awareness. The features were supposed to arrive as part of iOS 18 and were promoted the same year when launching the iPhone 16 models, but Apple is still working on them. In 2025, CEO Tim Cook acknowledged in 2025 that developing a "more personal" Siri was "taking a bit longer than we thought."
The delay led Apple to be accused in a March 2025 lawsuit of false advertising and unfair competition. But in a Wednesday filing in San Jose federal court covered by Reuters, Apple argued there is no proof executives knew at the time that either feature would be significantly delayed.
Apple's motion also pushed back on separate claims related to the Epic Games injunction, which required the company to let developers link users to external purchase options outside the App Store's 30 percent commission structure.
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found Apple in "willful violation" of that injunction last year after the company introduced a new system that still charged developers a 27 percent fee on some external sales. A federal appeals court partially reversed her sanctions in December.
Apple said it never guaranteed its compliance procedures would be foolproof, and argued the fraud claims were unsubstantiated.
"It is no secret that Apple faced challenges and weathered ups and downs in its stock price in 2025, like many major companies," Apple said. "But plaintiff takes a massive and unsupported leap by claiming that securities fraud caused the temporary price drops."The lawsuit covers shareholders who suffered losses between May 2024 and May 2025 and is led by South Korea's National Pension Service, the world's third-largest pension fund. Lawyers for the shareholders have not yet responded publicly to Apple's filing.
Apple plans to release a more personalized version of Siri powered by Google Gemini this year. It is expected to be part of iOS 26.4, which is currently in beta testing and should be released to the general public in March or April.Tags: Apple Intelligence, Epic Games vs. Apple, Apple LawsuitsThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Blender iPad App Development Halted as Android Tablets Get Priority Blender's work on a native iPad version of its open source 3D creation suite has been shelved, according to the development team.
Back in July, Blender revealed that it was developing for iPad, with an iPad Pro version of its desktop software coming first, complete with a fully-featured multitouch interface and support for Apple Pencil Pro. No release date was announced at the time.
Now it doesn't look like that's about to happen anytime soon. In January, a status update appeared on Blender's GitHub page for iPad development saying that the project is on hold until further notice.
No reason for the halt in development was given in the notice. However, as spotted by YouTuber Brad Colbow, in a response to a comment offering help on the project, Blender developer Dalai Felinto said that the team was now focusing on Android tablets first instead.
During the fall at SIGGRAPH in Vancouver, Blender showed a live tech demo of the software running on iPad, so there's still hope that the project isn't completely dead and will resume at some point. We'll update this story if we learn anything more about a development timeline.

What do Apple fans want? An iBook… er SE… er MacBook! Macworld
Next week, Apple is expected to release a new laptop, one that will be the lowest-priced MacBook in the company’s lineup. It’s new territory for Apple, and a new choice that fills a need amongst Apple customers. Because of that, anticipation has built up for this new product. Maybe you want to buy one, maybe you don’t, but you at least want to see what Apple is going to do.
That anticipation has spilled over into Macworld’s inboxes and social media comments sections. We’ve been reading your messages, and we’re sharing a few of them here.
What to call it: iBook? MacBook SE?
A podcast short about the name of the upcoming laptop struck a chord. One idea for the name in particular:
iBook resurgence 🤔
Colors and Numbers on TikTok
Many others across social media are hoping for an iBook resurgence, but it seems as though Apple has left behind the “i” naming system. Apple’s not one for nostalgia, but you never know.
I bet it’s MacBook SE
bleepblorp7676 on TikTok
Maybe? I mean, there’s the Apple Watch SE, but with the iPhone, Apple dumped “SE” in favor of “[model number]e”, so I don’t know what to think.
It’s going to be MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro…
NIckname on TikTok
That makes the most sense; after all, Apple used to have a “MacBook” that sort of fits the profile of the new product that’s coming. But it just feels so anticlimactic.
@macworld.com What to call the cheap Apple laptop #macbook ♬ original sound – Macworld – Macworld
Will it be powerful enough?
Reports say that this laptop will use a A18 Pro or A19 chip, the same chips used in iPhones. So, should its processing capability as a Mac be a concern?
The target market for this less expensive (not “cheap”) MacBook won’t care or likely even know that it runs on the same CPU as an iPhone…
Mitch Stone via Facebook
It is an iPhone with a bigger screen.
neillwd on YouTube
That’s a bad thing?
How cheap is ‘cheap’?
This laptop is expected to be affordable. But as Apple users know, the company’s idea of “affordable” is often different from ours.
I do wish people would stop looking at £700 as cheap, it’s probably going to be a very good computer for the masses.
Kennth Swift on Facebook
For the sake of clarification, when we talk about “cheap,” we’re talking about price. We’re not talking about “cheap” as a way of saying “poorly made,” as it is often used. That being said, is $699/£699 (rounded to $700/£700) cheap? In a general sense, I don’t think so, but in the perspective of Apple’s laptop lineup, it is.
If $699 I’ll be buying one for my wife in yellow
OldSchoolM on TikTok
It needs to be $599. Period.
iHusk on YouTube
Now you’re talkin’ iHusk. But will Apple do that? It feels unbelievable. I want to be wrong on this. Which leads us to…
Expect the unexpected
I really wonder if this MacBook will run iPadOS instead of MacOS.
sactoman0314 on TikTok
…Apple should simply make macOS available on the iPad. They could even charge for the license or allow customers to choose between macOS and another operating system when purchasing the device.
Doug M. via email
I can see why y’all would think that. These prices are in iPad territory. But I think Apple is confident that one won’t cannibalize the other, and I tend to agree. They’re different use cases.
I’ve been hearing this prediction since the Mac mini first came out decades ago.
quinnretro on TikTok
If you say it enough times, it’ll eventually become true.
And finally…
Apple sure has got a lot of free publicity on their future new MacBooks by teasing all you predictionist journalists for so long.
Neil via email
Ouch. The truth hurts, Neil.
Would any of the reported MacBook compromises be a deal-breaker for you? [Poll] Apple clearly needs some way of distinguishing the upcoming low-cost MacBook from the more expensive MacBook Air. We’d wondered whether color might be sufficient to limit cannibalization, but it’s been suggested that the new machine may have a number of compromises.
9to5Mac readers aren’t really the target market for an entry-level machine, but some might consider it as a second Mac, while others might recommend it to family and friends. However, would any of the rumoured compromises be a deal-breaker … ?

Apple’s new MacBook has one job Macworld
Next week is going to be a big one for Apple. Along with a new iPhone and iPads, Apple is rumored to launch its most anticipated Mac release since Apple silicon’s debut. According to reports, Apple is going to release a new entry in the MacBook lineup, a budget laptop that can compete with Chromebooks and cheap Windows laptops. A laptop that Apple hopes will grow the Mac installed base. A laptop for customers priced out of the Mac market.
That’s great, especially since it’s something customers have been wanting for a long time. But there’s another reason why I’m excited about this new laptop: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that this laptop will be available in “playful colors,” with yellow, green, blue, and pink among the possibilities.
Yes, that’s what I’m most excited about. A palette of color options means more than a wider array of choices. It signals that Apple is bringing a little fun back to its laptop lineup, an aspect that’s been missing for way too long.
Orange enabler
Until recently, I played it as safe as Apple with my own color choices–black, silver, gray, anything neutral. Then, two years ago, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and buy an orange car. Not only do I not regret it, but I also love it. I can remember being at a stoplight once, surrounded by four black and gray Teslas (which are everywhere in San Francisco). Suddenly, Elle Woods and I had something in common.
Elle Woods and her orange iBook in Legally Blonde.MGM
Then last fall, I got a Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max–without that car, and how it changed my perspective, I don’t think I would’ve picked it. For a while, I appreciated the back of the phone almost as much as its screen. The color just made me smile.
That’s the aspect of Apple’s laptops that has been missing for a while. They’re marvels of design, and they’re quite dignified, but “fun” doesn’t come to mind. Not like when you look at an iBook. Those were fun.
The six colors spirit
I haven’t forgotten about the iMac and its playful color palette, but it’s a desktop computer. I’m not toting an iMac around with me (that’s not my thing), I’m carrying a Space Black MacBook Pro. And as I sit in my local coffee shop writing this article, I count 13 laptops in use, all of them gray, silver, or black. As iconic as the MacBook Pro is, most laptops have copied its style. There seems to be an opportunity here to stand out, to think different.
The deepest Apple has dipped into the fun side of the pool is with the MacBook Air’s Starlight and Sky Blue options. I tested the Sky Blue MacBook Air, and it looks nice, but it and Starlight are subtle takes at fun, more variations of gold and silver than actual colors. They’re not bold like Cosmic Orange or the iBook’s lime green and tangerine. Many theorize that the logo Apple used to promote its March 4 media event is a hint at the colors of the new laptop. I certainly hope that’s the case.
The recent Apple logo used to promote next week’s release reminded me of the old days.Apple
Speaking of that logo, it reminds me of the original Apple logo, often referred to as the “six colors” logo. Longtime Apple customers think that logo is indicative of a different era for Apple, a time when the company had a more down-to-earth, unique, and playful aura. Now Apple is one of the most powerful and richest companies in the world–it’s a monolith, and so the logo it uses on its products is reflective of that.
A lot of users long for those good ol’ days, but the truth of the matter is that that kind of thinking is as dated as the six colors logo. Apple can still do fun, it just needs a modern interpretation. We don’t need a carry handle (which was kinda dumb on the iBook, anyway), nor do we need a clamshell design. Playful colors are the way to go.
Superficial choice
You might be thinking, “Colors? Really, Roman? You forced me to read your superficial reasoning to buy this underpowered laptop?” Well, here’s another, more practical reason why I want this laptop. There are times when I need to bring my laptop with me, but I would rather it not be an expensive MacBook Pro. For instance, when I travel, I bring a 15-year-old MacBook Pro (with a built-in disc burner), and I use it during down times to manage all the trip photos and videos I take. If it breaks, gets stolen, or gets lost, it’s not as devastating a loss as if it were the MacBook Pro.
I’ll be happy to replace that old MacBook with Apple’s new budget laptop. It’ll be more powerful than that laptop’s Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge CPU. And saying the budget laptop will be underpowered is a bit much. If Apple uses an A18 Pro or an A19, we’re talking about M1-like performance, which is good for general productivity and internet access, as well as the basic media management I like to do on vacation.
This budget laptop is going to be able to do a lot. Practical and fun? Count me in.

Apple’s March event: 6 burning questions Macworld
In recent years, Apple has increasingly reserved its media events for major announcements, such as flagship iPhone launches. Iterative product updates with chip bumps now often get the “silent press release” treatment, as the advancements are too insignificant to warrant hour-long keynotes.
On March 4, Apple is hosting what it’s calling an “experience” for select members of the media. It’s neither a full-scale keynote nor a mere press release drop. During that week, the company is expected to unveil at least five new products, including a cheaper MacBook, the iPhone 17e, boosted iPads and Macs, and maybe more. While the rumors have given us a solid idea of what to expect from each device, a few key questions remain unanswered.
1. Will the iPhone 17e still have a notch?
A year ago, Apple introduced the iPhone 16e, retiring its SE smartphone branding. The rebrand came with some pretty exciting changes, including a superior camera, display, and overall design—plus a not-so-exciting price hike. In a few days, Apple will reportedly launch the iPhone 17e, featuring the A19 and MagSafe compatibility. But what about the notch?
Some rumors have suggested that the iPhone 16e’s successor will drop the notch in favor of the more futuristic Dynamic Island. Other relevant leakers have contradicted this claim, stating that the notch is here to stay. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell for sure which route Apple will take.
Apple
On one hand, the iPhone SE notoriously maintained its prehistoric look for many years, so redesigning the second-gen “e” iPhone sounds unlikely. On the other hand, the “e” iPhone, despite costing more, offers fewer features than certain budget smartphones, so Apple may want to make it more enticing by adopting the Dynamic Island. Both options sound plausible.
2. Will Apple tease any unreleased AI features?
During WWDC24, Apple previewed Siri 2.0, featuring on-screen content awareness and personal context understanding. The company failed to meet its original deadline, and, eons later, the tools are still nowhere to be found. While we recently expected them to debut with iOS 26.4, the upgraded Apple Intelligence features may have been delayed, yet again, till a future OS release.
Apple
Certain reports now suggest that Apple will launch the new AI features as part of iOS 26.5. If true, it would be safe to assume that the engineers currently have working test software. In this case, will Apple tease these AI features during the March 4 experience to reassure its users and shareholders, or has it learned from its previous mistake not to make promises about unfinished technology? We’ll find out soon.
3. How cheap will the new MacBook be?
The low-cost MacBook will likely be the March 4 experience’s headlining release. According to credible leakers, Apple plans to compete with Chromebooks and other budget-friendly laptops by offering a comparable MacBook model. The notebook will possibly feature the iPhone 16 Pro’s A18 Pro processor in a vibrant 12.9-inch chassis. This would make it ideal for customers who don’t have the budget for a $999 MacBook Air or need the power of an M-series chip. But how “cheap” will it actually be?
While some reports suggest that the new MacBook will start at $599, others indicate that it could fall in the $699-799 range. For reference, the Google Store sells Acer Chromebooks that cost as little as $179, with mid-range models costing around $300-600, and higher-end editions going for no more than $800. Taking this into consideration, it would make more sense for Apple to target the mid-range Chromebooks with a $599 price tag. This would lure students and young adults, potentially winning them as lifelong customers through the ecosystem lock-in. But Apple pricing doesn’t always make sense—ahem, iPhone 16e—so a higher price of $799 wouldn’t exactly surprise us.
4. What M5 chip variants will we get?
Beyond the affordable MacBook, Apple could announce new M5 MacBook Pro and Mac Studio models within the next week. The MacBook Pro will likely get M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations, following last year’s vanilla M5 debut. Will customers get to configure the CPU and GPU? Certain reports, along with the online Apple Store’s updated Mac purchasing flow, suggest that users will finally get to pick the number of CPU and GPU cores separately. Meanwhile, Apple has a long history of limiting the variety of SKUs and maintaining a simple product approach. As such, we can’t really tell.
In the Mac Studio department, it remains unclear if Apple will release an M5 Ultra edition. The current Mac Studio comes in M4 Max and M3 Ultra variants, and Apple has stated that not every M-series chip will get an Ultra tier. So, Apple could offer the M5 Max as an option, along with either the unreleased M4 Ultra or all-new M5 Ultra. We’ll have to wait and see.
Apple
5. Will Apple raise prices?
The surge in demand for AI slop generation has led to a RAM shortage and subsequent price increases. Does this mean Apple will also start charging more for its products? Well, it’s hard to predict. CEO Tim Cook recently stated that the RAM crisis won’t significantly hurt Apple in the second quarter of the year, but he didn’t rule out a price hike, either.
6. What’s the second Studio Display tier all about?
Apple first launched the Studio Display four years ago, and a refresh is overdue. While we’ve long expected the company to release a Studio Display 2 in the near future, macOS code reveals that there will actually be two new Studio Displays, not one. At least one of them is rumored to adopt support for HDR content and a 120Hz refresh rate. Will the second model miss out on these premium perks and cost way less, or will it differ in size to cater to more customers? We’ll get some answers soon.

Netflix Walks Away From Warner Bros Deal, Paramount Set to Take Over Netflix has dropped out of the takeover battle for Warner Bros. Discovery, putting Paramount Skydance on course to win the whole WBD business.
The world's largest streaming service had been pegged to land a deal in which it would acquire Warner Bros., HBO, and HBO Max in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $72 billion in equity and $82.7 billion, including debt. But after Paramount submitted a final offer, valuing WBD at $111bn including debt, Netflix declined to match it.
In an announcement on Thursday, Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said:
The transaction we negotiated would have created shareholder value with a clear path to regulatory approval. However, we've always been disciplined, and at the price required to match Paramount Skydance's latest offer, the deal is no longer financially attractive, so we are declining to match the Paramount Skydance bid.
We believe we would have been strong stewards of Warner Bros.' iconic brands, and that our deal would have strengthened the entertainment industry and preserved and created more production jobs in the U.S. But this transaction was always a 'nice to have' at the right price, not a 'must have' at any price.Netflix shares surged by 8.5% in after-hours trading, indicating relief among investors that the streaming company has not risked overpaying for Warner Bros.
Warner's board said Thursday night that it still recommends Netflix's offer, but now views Paramount's bid as "superior" – its first sign of backing for the suitor that it labeled hostile when the takeover battle began in December.
Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav said that Paramount's offer "will create tremendous value," and that WBD was "excited about the potential of a combined Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery."
Assuming Paramount's takeover is successful, it will give its owner Larry Ellison (a friend of Donald Trump) ownership of not only Warner Bros. and HBO, but also news channels CNN and CBS News. What's Coming in the M5 MacBook Air Along with the low-cost MacBook, Apple could introduce a refreshed version of the MacBook Air next week. Most of the focus will be on the new machine, but the MacBook Air is expected to get some useful internal updates.
M5 Chip
The next-generation MacBook Air will adopt the M5 chip, which Apple already introduced in the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models that came out last year.
Apple's M5 chip uses third-generation 3-nanometer technology, and it features up to a 10-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU with 3.5x faster performance than the M4 chip.
The M5's multithreaded CPU performance is up to 15 percent faster than the M4, and it offers 30 percent faster GPU performance. Apple added a Neural Accelerator to each GPU core to improve the speeds of GPU-based AI workloads. Unified memory bandwidth is 153GB/s, which is close to a 30 percent improvement over the M4's memory bandwidth. Unified memory architecture lets the chip use a single memory pool for running AI models on device, boosting GPU performance, and improving multithreaded performance in apps, so an upgrade there is meaningful. RAM will continue to start at 16GB, with 24GB and 32GB available as upgrade options.
Third-generation ray-tracing, second-generation dynamic caching, and enhanced shader cores bring improvements to gaming and other system-intensive tasks. An updated 16-core Neural Engine is more energy efficient than before, so we could see battery life improvements.
Storage tiers are likely to stay the same, starting at 256GB with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB available as upgrade options.
Design
The MacBook Air got a design overhaul in 2022, and there are no signs that Apple is planning for an updated chassis in 2026. Apple often uses the same design for several years before updating, and design refreshes are usually tied to major new features.
There are rumors that the MacBook Air will get an OLED display sometime after Apple launches new MacBook Pro models with OLED technology in late 2026, so we could be waiting for OLED before we get another major design update.
We're expecting Apple to release the same 13-inch and 15-inch size options in 2026. Both will feature the same aluminum unibody design and fanless thermal system, along with a Retina LCD display.
The MacBook Air is likely to continue to offer two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, and the same speaker, microphone, and camera setup.
Pricing
MacBook Air pricing is not expected to change, and it should continue to start at $1,099. There is a possibility that memory upgrades will be more expensive due to DRAM shortages that have driven prices up.
Release Date
Apple CEO Tim Cook teased product announcements that are set to start on Monday, so we could see the MacBook Air as soon as next week. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Razer Launches MagSafe-Compatible Laptop Sleeve for Charging Your iPhone and AirPods Razer today introduced a new 16-inch laptop sleeve that has an integrated wireless charging feature for smartphones and other small devices like earbuds. Priced at $130, the sleeve includes two MagSafe-compatible wireless charging zones, so it can charge an iPhone and AirPods at the same time.
The wireless charger is integrated into the top of the laptop sleeve, and the magnets serve as a clasp when the sleeve is closed and being used to transport a laptop. Power is delivered through a USB-C cable that can be plugged into a 30W+ power adapter or a Mac.
Charging speeds are limited to 15W, so you won't get full speed wireless charging on newer iPhones that support up to 25W wireless charging. The sleeve has one 15W charging spot for an iPhone and a 5W charging spot for the AirPods. It is not designed to charge two iPhones at once, both because there's just one 15W charger and because of space constraints.
There is built-in padding to keep a MacBook safe from drops, and a plush lining inside protects it from scratches. The exterior is black and made from a polyester material that's designed to resist wear and tear while also protecting a laptop from rain. Reinforced corners ensure no damage in case of accidental bumps.
The sleeve is sized to fit laptops up to 16 inches, so it works with Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro.
The Razer Laptop Sleeve 16 With Wireless Charging for Devices can be purchased from the Razer website for $130.Tag: RazerThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple-Supported Aliro 1.0 Smart Lock Standard Officially Released The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes Apple, today released the Aliro 1.0 specification. Aliro is a new standard aimed at improving the way that smart door locks work with smartphones and wearables.
Aliro supports interoperability between mobile devices, wearables, and access control readers, so smart locks can work with any smartphone or wearable device without the need for a dedicated app. It is aimed at improving smart locks for the home, but also for corporate offices, universities, and hotels.
Apple, Google, and Samsung support Aliro, and Aliro-enabled locks will be able to be added to wallet apps on iPhone and Android devices. Major smart home companies that produce smart locks have also signed on to support Aliro. The Alliance says that Apple, Allegion, Aqara, Google, HID, Kastle, Kwikset, Last Lock, Nordic Semiconductor, Nuki Home Solutions, NXP Semiconductors, Qorvo, Samsung, and STMicroelectronics will be among the first to achieve Aliro 1.0 certification.
With Aliro, more smart locks should support Apple Home Key for hands-free unlocking with NFC and UWB.
The Aliro 1.0 specification includes a framework for using asymmetric cryptography for secure interactions between user devices and readers, without sacrificing user privacy. It supports multiple communication methods, including NFC, Bluetooth LE, and ultra wideband (UWB).
Aliro will be updated over time to meet new market and ecosystem requirements. Features like secure key sharing will come in the future.Tag: AliroThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
