There are two things Apple should have announced at yesterday’s “Spring Loaded” event, but didn’t. They involve the Magic Mouse for the Mac and the new Apple TV remote.
I’m really excited about the new iMac line-up. However, I’m disappointed that Apple hasn’t fixed the big problem with the Magic Mouse: the inability to use it while it’s charging. The charging port is still on the bottom of the mouse, which means you have to turn it over (upside down) and plug in a Lightning cable to juice it up. Sure, a fully charged Magic Mouse runs for about a month before needing more juice, but still….
Moving on: the new Siri Remote looks to be a good upgrade of the often-reviled remote. It has a one-piece aluminum design and features a clickpad control that offers five-way navigation for better accuracy, and is also touch-enabled for the fast directional swipes. Apple says the outer ring of the clickpad supports an intuitive circular gesture that turns it into a jog control that’s handy for finding a scene in a movie or show.
However, what it doesn’t have is an U1 chip to help you find it. Say what? After all, Apple made a big to-do about the AirTag’s ability to pinpoint locations within a few feet when using an iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. However, if you want to keep track of the new Siri Remote, you’ll have to attach an AirTag to it.
Was this a tactic to sell more AirTags? If so, shame on you, Apple.
