In the U.S., personal computer shipments totaled 15.9 million units in the second quarter of 2012, a 5.7% decline from the same period last year, according to the latest data from the Gartner research group (http://www.gartner.com). All vendors in the top five but Apple saw a decline in sales.

Apple is now the third top computer vendor in the U.S. (and would be number one if the iPad were counted). For the second quarter of 2012, Apple had 12% market share on sales of 1.9 million Macs compared to 10.8% market share and sales of 1.8 million in the second quarter of 2011. That’s annual growth of 4.3%.

HP is still the top U.S. computer vendor with 25% market share. Dell is in second place with 21.7% market share. Those vendors saw year-over-year drops of 12.7% and 9.5%, respectively.

Globally, HP is the top computer vendor with 14.9% market share, followed by Lenova (14.7%), Acer (11%), Dell (10.7%) and ASUS (7%). Apple has yet to break into the top five globally.
