iPhone 4: First Impressions

MacNews and MacTech Editors spent a good amount of time this afternoon with the new iPhone. We wanted to share our initial impressions.

First, it’s fast. Apple didn’t have anything specific on how fast the new A4 processor was, but it was noticeably fast. It reminded us more of the iPad’s performance rather than the the iPhone 3GS. In some cases, we saw apps load 2-3x faster.

It’s thin. The thinness is noticeable. It feels super solid though.

While the edges are not as curved as the 3GS, the phone was very comfortable in our front pocket — even with blue jeans.

Guitar Hero is now available for the first time on iPhone iPod touch. The US$2.99 game features all-new gameplay exclusively designed for the Apple devices. It sports tracks from such bands as Queen, Rise Against, The Rolling Stones, Vampire Weekend, Weezer and The White Stripes.

Where’s Phil?

Our friend Jeff Ganyard at MacSpeech/Nuance Communications made an interesting comment this afternoon at WWDC…

While Apple doesn’t typically parade all of their executives across a keynote anyway, this year’s keynote did have one noticeable omission — Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President, Worldwide Product Marketing. Scott Forstall, Jonathan Ive, Bob Mansfield, and others were part of keynote (either live or in video), but not Phil. This is a contrast from the past.

Videos tout the iPhone 4

The video features Apple execs talking about the new iPhone. Version 4 of the smartphone will go on sale June 23 with pre-orders starting June 15.

Apple to debut iAds on July 1

Apple will debut its iAd mobile advertising network on July 1 on iPhone and iPod touch devices running its iOS 4 software platform. iAds combine the emotion of TV advertising with the interactivity of Internet advertising, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
