New Mac mini comes with HDMI port, SD card slot

Apple has unveiled a completely redesigned Mac mini, featuring up to twice the graphics performance, a new HDMI port and a new SD card slot, all in an aluminum enclosure. Pricing starts at US$699.

“The sleek, aluminum Mac mini packs great features, versatility and value into an elegant, amazingly compact design,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a press release. “With twice the graphics performance, HDMI support and industry-leading energy efficiency, customers are going to love the new Mac mini.”

Mac OS X and iOS both on a Mac?

I’ve surmised that future versions of Mac OS X would include elements of iOS (the operating system formerly known as iPhone OS) and I still think it will. However, two other folks have offered an interesting alternative: iOS running along Mac OS X on a Mac.

“MacNews” reader Loren Kruse made this prediction: “The next iMac will be a touch enable computer either through the screen or through a multi-touch tablet and will have Mac OS X along with IOS built in. This would greatly increase the marketing potential for the apps and advertising.”

Macsimum Poll: are you happy with the specs on the new Mac mini?


In this week’s poll, we’re asking whether you were happy with the specs of the updated Mac mini. The poll can be found on the right side of the “Macsimum” home page, below the “Macsimum Opinion” column.

In our last poll, we asked if you were happy with Apple’s announcement at the Worldwide Developer Conference? Forty-one percent of you said “yes.” Twenty-six percent wanted more Mac hardware news, 20% wanted more Mac OS X news, and 14% wanted an Apple TV announcement.
