The next iLife app: FaceTime iChat?

The online scuttlebutt says iLife 2011 is coming very soon, dropping iDVD and adding a new app. I think that’s about right, and I think that new app may be a hybrid of FaceTime and iChat. (FaceChat? iTime? Naw, Apple will probably just call it FaceTime.)

In case you’re not familiar with it, FaceTime is video calling that uses Wi-Fi. Apple says that using FaceTime is as easy as making a regular voice call, with no set-up required. On the iPhone 4 and fourth gen iPod touch, you can instantly switch to the rear camera to show others what you are seeing with just a tap.

Study: iPhone 4 glass breaking 82% more than iPhone 3GS

SquareTrade (http://www.squaretrade.com) has analyzed iPhone accidents for over 20,000 iPhone 4s covered by SquareTrade Care Plans and found a 82% increase in reported broken screens compared to the iPhone 3GS. According to the independent warranty provider:

° iPhone 4 owners reported 82% more damaged screens in the first four months compared to iPhone 3GS owners.

° Overall, the reported accident rate for iPhone 4s was 68% higher than for the iPhone 3GS.

° An estimated 15.5% of iPhone 4 owners will have an accident within a year of buying their phone.

Ottowa Hospital goes with the iPad

The Ottawa Hospital will deploy “several hundred” iPads to its doctors and nurses next month. By the end of the year the institution should have deployed 1,000 or more of the Apple tablets for mobile access to health records “and the number will go up from there,” reports “CIO Canada” (http://www.itworldcanada.com/news/the-electronic-health-record-meets-the-ipad/141650).

iPad is top-selling tech gadget ever

With an estimated 8.5 million units sold to date, the iPad is now the best-selling tech gadget in history, according to Colin McGranahan of Bernstein Research. In a note to clients — as reported by “InformationWeek” (http://www.informationweek.com/news/storage/portable/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227700347&itc=ref-true) — he called the Apple tablet “a runaway success of unprecedented proportion.”
