It’s always interesting to review a new “gold master” update to software that’s truly come a long way since version 1, and with Squeeze 6 (US$799) from Sorenson Media (http://www.sorensonmedia.com), the evidence shows that the developers listen well to their customers. This outstanding video-compression software takes encoding video to an entirely new level of performance, communication, and integration with editing applications.
Upon first launch, the splash screen provides information and tutorials on the real power of this software. Like prior versions, Squeeze 6 supports all major file types including AAC, AC3, AIF/AIFF, AVI, PSP, 3GPP, DVD, SWF, MOV, and many more. The encoders are the real alchemy of its producing excellent, stable, crisp, high-quality output in a wide range of file types.
This is true for both video and audio encoders, allowing the user to maintain excellent depth, tone, and quality for all aspects of their projects. Working directly to Squeeze from Apple’s iLife, Final Cut Pro, or most major video-editing suites is much easier. The new user interface is extremely intuitive and also easier to read than previous versions.
While many of the best features from previous versions remain, the new features make this a standout product. In particular, the ability to transmit SMS messages, emails, Tweets, and review notifications is a huge timesaver. You can publish straight to YouTube or most video hosting sites, and you get a full year of access to the Sorenson 360 network.
Having a full-size desktop computer is highly recommended, but Squeeze will run on a late model laptop if you have the time. Upgrade pricing is available and you’ll find Squeeze 6 is more than a “gold master” update, it’s now the gold standard in video encoding.
