A story on MarketWatch reports that late yesterday, Amazon.com launched a digital video download service, which it says offers television shows and movies from more that 30 studio and network partners. The service, dubbed Amazon Unbox, will sell television shows for US$1.99 per episode, movies for $7.99 to $14.99, and movie rentals for $3.99. Several major studios, including 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Universal Pictures, have signed to provide content through Unbox. The Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, CBS, Fox and MTV, among others, will provide television content. This launch comes just days before Apple’s “It’s Showtime” media event next Tuesday. [Update: At the moment Amazon Unbox is not Mac-compatible]
